Stephen O'Malley was cool with running white power record ads when he had a zine IIRC but I guess that's more of a hand-wavey libertarian "it's about the art" situation

Curious that so many literary modernists (Eliot, Pound, Wyndham Lewis et al) were on the Right, but so few musical modernists ever have been - I can't think of any offhand.

“As for Webern, he forsook his onetime socialist views to become an unashamed Hitler enthusiast, greeting the invasion of Denmark and Norway with almost orgasmic prose: “This is Germany today! But the National Socialist one, to be sure! Not just any one! This is exactly the new state, for which the seed was already laid twenty years ago. Yes, a new state it is, one that has never existed before!! It is something new! Created by this unique man!!!…Each day becomes more exciting. I see such a good future. It will be different also for me.”

Excerpt From: Alex Ross. “The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century.” iBooks.

Garth Brooks was mentioned at the top of this thread but is that really true? He came out with a pro gay song in 1992, when he was the biggest country star in the world.

Yet Webern inspired a whole generation of composers who embraced his brand of serialism as a means to ensure that art music could no longer be coopted by genocidal ideologies.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 20 February 2018 15:08 (six years ago) link

I doubt serialism is 'inherently' left-wing but I can think of very few on the right who care for it, or even take it seriously for that matter.

It's not. He's pretty vague about it, and it's unclear to what degree, but while that's insufficient evidence alone, it's pretty clear his sympathies lean more to the left than the right.

That's Keith Urban. Brooks is married to fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood who performed at Bill Clinton's first inauguration. The two of them also performed at Al Gore's Live Earth event in 2007.

yeah you know it's going to be a totally cordial and normal panel when one of the first things he says is "i sense a little bit of your own personal hangups as a woman that made you incapable of transcending them and enjoying the love story, which is quite evolved and quite modern."

for what it's worth, gary numan:

I genuinely thought that the best option was voting for the Conservatives at the time. But I do regret talking about that because people got really fucking weird about it. At the last election, there was a Scottish newspaper that ran a big feature that had me down as Conservative, which was an absolute bloody lie. I only voted for them that one time and I was so demoralised by what happened and the negative reaction I got for saying I voted Conservative that I get involved very little in that sort of thing now.

Ever since the various FB shares revealed this years ago I've chosen to ignore this fact, kind of like how I ignore it when getting together with similarly minded family. Tobin always reminded me of my Ohio cousins etc. anyway.

Evan, Monday, 5 March 2018 16:57 (six years ago) link

xpost considering the shitty coordination policies of lots of plans, that's not surprising (albeit infuriating). Often secondary plans have "non-duplication of benefits" rules so instead of just picking up the rest of the tab, they will only pay the difference between what the primary plan paid, and what the secondary plan would have paid if they had been the primary plan. so that could mean if Plan A (Medicare or whomever) paid 80%, and Plan b normally pays 90%, Plan B only adds an additional 10%.

so you could be paying expensive premiums for two plans and STILL be responsible for 10% of your medical costs, which if you're old and have a chronic ailment that requires any kind of expensive recurring inpatient or outpatient care, can add up to excruciating totals.

re: dick dale - that sort of thing reminds me of when people quote william s. burroughs to try and prove how horrible gun control is. people, i don't care how good a book naked lunch is, a guy who shot and killed his wife is not a persuasive argument _against_ gun control.
