when someone is down in material and still desperate to trade queens w/ you i mean like if u really want to but wouldn't you rather hold onto yours???

Mordy, Friday, 23 February 2018 15:02 (six years ago) link

I was impressed by these, being printed at the same screenprint studio I sometimes use:

only if it improves their position, trading pieces is a great way to stay ahead, particularly trading queens decreases variance, unless u just want your queen for fun in which case whos to argue

lag∞n, Friday, 23 February 2018 16:48 (six years ago) link

that illustration is something lol xp

lag∞n, Friday, 23 February 2018 16:50 (six years ago) link

xp that's what i mean. if they're down on material they need that variance. it just reeks of weakness if they're losing and they're looking to trade queens.

Mordy, Friday, 23 February 2018 16:55 (six years ago) link

oh i see i misunderstood yr post

lag∞n, Friday, 23 February 2018 17:20 (six years ago) link

started out playing closed q/k pawn openings cause theyre simple to understand but now im messing with queens gambit and the sicilian and its so much better wow

lag∞n, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:17 (six years ago) link

whats a cool defense for d4

lag∞n, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:18 (six years ago) link

Nf6 daring d5

imago, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:21 (six years ago) link

ok let's say they call your dare

Mordy, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:24 (six years ago) link

The hypermodern choice, Nf6 creates a dynamic imbalance right off the bat by attacking the center with a knight rather than occupying it with a pawn. This usually signals one of the Indian defenses, such as the Queen's Indian or the Nimzo-Indian, and can also lead to the Grunfeld Defence or the Benoni. However, transpositions back into other openings are still possible at this early point. This has become, by far, the most popular response to 1.d4, representing more than half of the high-level games played in most databases.

imago, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

i just got clobbered by an opening called the Blackburne Shilling Gambit which i have never seen before and was quite humiliating to lose to. should've been easy to fend off if i knew what to look for...

Mordy, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:48 (six years ago) link

u cld def get pretty far in blitz just by memorizing a single obscure not totally fundamentally sound opening

lag∞n, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:59 (six years ago) link

feel like ive seen that with the one where u sacrifice a couple pawns cant remember if it q or k side i fell for it once and got wrecked then saw it a couple more times and didnt take the second pawn and there was def a long pause on the other side

lag∞n, Monday, 26 February 2018 18:02 (six years ago) link

i always play scandi against king's pawn opening and the length of time it takes the person to decide indicates whether they accept the pawn sacrifice (the right, quick move), or move the pawn to e5 (the wrong move)

Mordy, Monday, 26 February 2018 18:07 (six years ago) link

ppl are so wary of accepting pawn sacs (i mean rightly so)

Mordy, Monday, 26 February 2018 18:07 (six years ago) link

btw i've complained about this on the other chess thread i'm pretty sure but i'm always shocked at how shitty the attitude and behavior of some of these players are considering that you'd figure chess attracts a more sophisticated thinker?

Mordy, Monday, 26 February 2018 18:09 (six years ago) link

competition really brings it out in ppl

lag∞n, Monday, 26 February 2018 18:13 (six years ago) link

the lichess chat window says "please be nice in the chat" right in the entry field lol tbh no one has been rude to me on there, online poker is def a million times worse, the site i play on recently replaced chat with a bunch of pre made messages u cn choose from nice hand bad beat and so forth

Does this mean no one is on chess.com anymore?

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 02:38 (six years ago) link

i think its still the most popular, lichess just has a pleasant website imo

lag∞n, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 03:30 (six years ago) link

lichess is a spunky open source project

I’m still on chess.com!

Mordy, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 04:04 (six years ago) link

this thread has me trying to play a bit

I’m real bad, apparently no instinct whatsoever

i dont think anyone has an innate ability to play chess, might want to try playing against the computer some to get reps, being to take back moves is a good learning tool + losing to the computer doesnt feel as bad

lag∞n, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 05:06 (six years ago) link

i have an iphone app just called "chess" the developer is mastersoft u can set the skill of the engine to whatever you want then itll automatically raise it as you beat the levels it has hints and takebacks etc

its fun to see how all ones moves are bad, feels like a minor victory to make one good move

lag∞n, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 17:34 (six years ago) link

that is p much the only losing move, and they found it

imago, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 17:47 (six years ago) link

god bless

lag∞n, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 17:54 (six years ago) link

if you want to beat me play the King's Gambit. I always lose really badly against that opening for some reason.

cajunsunday, Sunday, 4 March 2018 13:32 (six years ago) link

been doing a ton of puzzles recently and i think its working

lag∞n, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 22:52 (six years ago) link

blacks best move style puzzles seem obvs better than the mate in two family

lag∞n, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 22:56 (six years ago) link

oh thanks for sharing this - this is precisely something i've wanted to understand better partic coordinating bishops and pawn placement and trading bad bishops for good bishops

Mordy, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 23:38 (six years ago) link

yeah that one was a bit of a revelation for me

lag∞n, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 23:39 (six years ago) link

one thing ive noticed abt players at my level including myself is being almost blind to threats when theyre attacking, just won two games in a row off of very easily defended mates when i was under fire, being under time control prob doesnt help too

lag∞n, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 23:40 (six years ago) link

yeah I try to always 1st think "ok what can my opponent do to me" rather than "what can I unleash on them" when appraising things after their move

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 23:44 (six years ago) link

sometimes they thing youre attacking a pawn instead of their king lol

lag∞n, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 23:46 (six years ago) link

i've been seeing so many philidor defenses lately. it's such a conservative opening and it dooms black's dark squared pawn to the back ranks. don't really understand why ppl like it.

Mordy, Tuesday, 20 March 2018 03:59 (six years ago) link

dark squared bishop* i meant

Mordy, Tuesday, 20 March 2018 03:59 (six years ago) link

just hit 1200 in 10 min blitz for the first time. my 15|10 is much better. has anyone else noticed that their blitz rating is significantly smaller than longer formats?
