I assumed they thought the Spoon album was pretty good when placing it in their original top 100 of the decade.

"What HQ Trivia Host Scott Rogowsky Is Listening to Right Now"

skip, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 06:41 (six years ago) link

I just came here to post the same thing:
https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/what-hq-trivia-host-scott-rogowsky-is-listening-to-right-now/
All native marketing is disorienting to an extent but this really made me doubt my own reality for some reason.

Man, just found out that P4k published their spicy takedown of a 19-year-old Sublime record three days after what would have been Bradley's 50th birthday :(

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 21:57 (six years ago) link

that's messed up. didnt even see that review, bout to check it. i already hate it.

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:00 (six years ago) link

yeah, that record has some problems, but it's great!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:01 (six years ago) link

Don't get how they can tear down Sublime, and yet give multiple BNAs to cheap knock off Vampire Weekend.

Moodles, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:04 (six years ago) link

could give a fuck about Sublime but that review was a disgrace

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:06 (six years ago) link

Rostam:

"Growing up, I was into classical music and the Beatles and also Achtung Baby by U2. But then something changed in fifth grade and I started getting into modern rock radio. And I remember hearing the Sublime CD 40oz. to Freedom, and having my mind blown by it. I still listen to that album. I stand by it. Come at me-- I'll defend it even though it's homophobic and misogynistic. Musically, it's one of the most forward-thinking albums of the 90s.

The problem with Sublime now is that their music exists through people who still listen to Sublime-- and a lot of them may or may not be douchebags. I'm not going to make any judgements. But if you take their first album on its own terms, it really is amazing. I actually bought [Vampire Weekend frontman] Ezra [Koenig] 40oz. to Freedom a few years ago. He started getting into the third album, Sublime, and I was like, "No, dude, 40oz. is so much better." If you listen to KROQ in L.A., they still play Sublime three or four times an hour. It lives on."

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:08 (six years ago) link

i love this line from that Sublime review

On “Right Back,” he dismisses his girlfriend as a ho and strongly suggests he slept with yours

"can you believe deceased musician Brad Nowell implied he had relations with your significant other?"

omar little, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:17 (six years ago) link

yeah, that record has some problems, but it's great!

yeah! that review was bad. i thought weiss's review was p good sitting through a shitty band - SUBLIME POLL

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:17 (six years ago) link

I didn't realize Vampire Weekend actually copped to the Sublime influence. Those are some remarkable quotes. I had to look them up because I wasn't sure if they were real or elaborate Whiney fanfic.

Moodles, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:56 (six years ago) link

sublime is kinda terrible tho

It's not delivery, it's Adorno! (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:59 (six years ago) link

maybe they aren't your kind of music but as a band they were pretty together. that album's pretty good, i had a nice time rediscovering it last year.

couldn't really care what they think of 40 oz. i'll go to pitchfork if i ever need the top 3 songs by the voice of some quiz app

i liked the review!

marcos, Thursday, 1 March 2018 01:40 (six years ago) link

i didn't think it took any cheap shots. sublime is a terrible band. i also loved them as a teenager. the reviewer did a pretty good job of describing why sublime was exceptional in their succeeds and why a lot of people were drawn to them but also why they are a repulsive and awful group.

marcos, Thursday, 1 March 2018 01:45 (six years ago) link

*success

marcos, Thursday, 1 March 2018 01:45 (six years ago) link

*cueing up 40oz btw*

marcos, Thursday, 1 March 2018 01:47 (six years ago) link

also those quotes from gwen stefani were hilarious

marcos, Thursday, 1 March 2018 01:48 (six years ago) link

'repulsive and awful' feels like a huge overstatement

Enjoying way more of their recent 4.0 to 7.0 albums than 8.1 and up.

billstevejim, Thursday, 1 March 2018 07:50 (six years ago) link

40 oz is better than the last St Vincent album.

billstevejim, Thursday, 1 March 2018 07:51 (six years ago) link

I wonder if a review of their self-titled would've gotten a better reception, since it's the one with much more critical acclaim

fuck that snobby new AWK review

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 8 March 2018 13:41 (six years ago) link

Also, if any p4k copy editors read this thread

The self-help angle, honed by years of motivational speaking and advice-column side-hustle, is made explicit via three-minute spoken-word interludes—pep talks to help get you through your day, or maybe just the album itself.

That should be three minute-long interludes, not three-minute interludes.

Simon H., Thursday, 8 March 2018 13:43 (six years ago) link

like would it kill him to describe the actual music? most of this is hand wringing about the lack of subtext and nuance and whether he is authentic or not. like a re-heated review of "I Get Wet" from 17 years ago

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 8 March 2018 13:44 (six years ago) link

"some mindless 1988-ass arena pablum"

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 8 March 2018 13:45 (six years ago) link

one mention of Bruce Springsteen (?) no Roxy Music, Cheap Trick, ELO, Queen, Bowie, etc. put this into context you "writer"

like would it kill him to describe the actual music?

yeah this struck me as well, you'd think it was identical to his previous records, which it really isn't.

I tend to be kind of a pitchfork apologist but yeah that andrew wk review was not great and very weirdly cynical. dude needs to party more.

josh az (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:52 (six years ago) link

“You’re Not Alone,” the big finish, manages to wring poignancy out of the most obvious and obviously stated sentiment.

so cynical he can't help but use obvious twice in one sentence
