Second biggest payroll and clear underdogs. Only in San Francisco.

I have them just beneath the wild cards. Better than last season, but not good enough.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 16 February 2018 21:05 (six years ago) link

i have been MIA on ILx but wanted to comment on the moves the Giants have made this off-season. after the depressing 2017 season i wanted them to tear it down and start over but big market teams don't do that. Stanton was an interesting possibility that didn't work out. getting McCutchen and Longoria as a back up plan is not half bad. the Giants still have questions especially the four and five starters but i would rather them try something like this then what a lot of tear it all down teams have been doing around the league. Hot Stove was very boring this year unless you are a Giant fan, for us it has been pretty exciting. i'm looking forward to this year after all and didn't think i would be close to that after the end of last season.

hi everyone!

Bee OK, Thursday, 22 February 2018 02:09 (six years ago) link

huge sad news. the Giants have lost Grant Brisbee to the national media. i do not want to share!

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2018/2/14/17005102/mccovey-chronicles-site-news

Don’t think of this as a goodbye. Think of this as an annoying roommate moving out and being surprisingly cool to hang out with on a limited basis...

I always wondered if I would choose to follow the Giants full time or if I would do national baseball full time if I had the choice. Recently, I got that choice, and it made me realize just how much I wasn’t looking forward to covering the Giants more than I already was. I’m running out of jokes, insight, and creativity. I’m running out of different ways to say a team stinks or that relievers are unpredictable. I’m running out of ways to gloat about three championships in five years. I’m sick of my own voice when it comes to the Giants, and I’m living in constant fear that everyone else has, too.

I’m not leaving the site. This reads like a buildup to me saying, “Aaaaand I’m out of here. Later, nerds,” but I promise that’s not how this ends. I’m just not going to do nearly as much as I’ve been doing...

One of the reasons I waited so long is that I wanted to make sure that the person taking over was paid fairly. Not full-time money, but enough to where I wouldn’t feel like a fraud for passing all the responsibility for this site to a college kid making $200 a month because that’s the only shitty model that today’s media environment allows. I’ve spent 13 years building this site — yes, this site is a surly teenager — and you’d better believe that I care about how it evolves and changes.

It’ll be great, I promise. Note that this won’t be like when Jeff Sullivan left Baseball Nation but still pretended like he was going to write for Lookout Landing forever. That’s because he’s a fraud who claimed that he cared about his readers. I, for the record, have never claimed that. And I’m planning to stick around and write about the Giants.

Just not, you know, every damned day. Several times a day. Seven days a week.

Because, friends, that was kinda breaking me.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to the new, improved McCovey Chronicles.

Grant started it all and he will be sorely missed.

i forgot the most important thing, get well Orlando Cepeda!

Bee OK, Thursday, 22 February 2018 06:32 (six years ago) link

0 ER 6 E lose 6 - 5

"Remember last year, when the first spring game ended with the Giants coming back in the ninth inning and hitting a walk-off homer when they played the entire 2016 season without doing that? That was such a good omen."

Bee OK, Saturday, 24 February 2018 03:21 (six years ago) link

Ha, Bee, with your message I really thought something bad happened to Grant. Like cancer or car accident.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 24 February 2018 03:36 (six years ago) link

Don't know why Giants aren't jumping on Lance Lynn.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 24 February 2018 03:38 (six years ago) link

good news:

The Giants issued a statement Monday morning updating his condition: "The Cepeda Family would like to thank the baseball family for its concern and well wishes for Orlando. We are pleased to report that Orlando continues to make significant progress every day and is showing major signs of improvement."

Bee OK, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 00:41 (six years ago) link

Grant Brisbee is still writing for the Giants just about everyday:

Tim Lincecum will not be going to the Dodgers. He is instead signing a major-league deal with the Texas Rangers, a team that is not the Dodgers. This is probably best for everyone involved, except for the Rangers fans who will have to remember the very real, fleeting hope they felt when Lincecum’s brain seized up on him in the first inning of Game 1 of the 2010 World Series. This will be followed by memories that the same pitcher mowed them down in Game 5.

Did we mention that the Dodgers weren’t the team that signed Lincecum? That seems important.

...and while that might be disappointing to those of us hoping for a reunion, there’s going to be more Tim Lincecum in baseball next year, and that’s an excellent thing.

Man, I hope he kicks ass.

Bee OK, Thursday, 1 March 2018 03:41 (six years ago) link

Looked up stats on Lance Lynn and he does get a lot of fly ball outs, which I would think could play well in SF.

i'm ready for baseball already.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 00:48 (six years ago) link

nothing to say yet. not sure if i'm going to get Extra Innings this year or just get it thru MLB.TV, still deciding. i almost took the year off but the Giants did enough to keep me interested.

Giants lost Jeff Samardzija yesterday and now Madison Bumgarner suffered a fractured left hand after the line drive that hit him in Friday’s last tune up game.

@extrabaggs
Bumgarner having surgery tomorrow to insert pins in fractured pinky knuckle. It will be 4-6 weeks then he has to have pins removed. This is not going to be a short DL stint. But he expects to pitch before the All-Stsr break.

yeah same. also I wouldn’t be surprised to see him as a coach or manager one day.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 04:16 (six years ago) link

these Giants starters have to throw shut outs in order to win. they should be better on offence but have trouble scoring runs. and all this after being the best offence for scoring runs in spring training.

Bee OK, Thursday, 19 April 2018 03:50 (six years ago) link

spring training doesn’t mean much, especially in Arizona.

supporting from the very core of your heart is what helps them. it amplifies their inspiration receptors

Bee OK, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 05:51 (five years ago) link

having to live without Bumgarner is hard enough but if they lose Cueto for a bit of time then it is probably over. i don't think they have the starting pitching depth to tread water for a long time.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 06:02 (five years ago) link

to be fair, not many teams can compete after they lost their first two starters.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 16:08 (five years ago) link

Only lost Cueto for about six weeks, considering the alternative this is great news

Bee OK, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 05:01 (five years ago) link

'm so depressed right now nothing worse than getting swept in a 4 game series on top of all that setting a franchise strikeout record

Bee OK, Friday, 11 May 2018 05:57 (five years ago) link

Strikeouts have been up for the Giants all year, probably at least partially because the team has embraced the launch angle revolution, but this goes beyond that. We’re well past Tip Your Cap territory. This is Chronicle Feature Story About Alonzo Powell And Rich Schu Staying Up All Night territory.

Bee OK, Friday, 11 May 2018 06:06 (five years ago) link

of course we can't sweep the Reds. at .500 and that is just about right for this team.

i was supposed to go to tonight's Kershaw vs. Bumgarner game but sadly it's not going to happen. my co-worker, supposedly, lost his wallet over the weekend and said that without ID he couldn't access the tickets. i'm sad as i have never seen either pitcher live before and was really looking forward to going to Dodger Stadium for the first time to see a baseball game.
