they did the TRON soundtrack in that second period too

They've only ever done a handful of remixes too, nearly all of which are A++

yea I'm pretty disappointed that we didn't get an Alive 2017
did they even play live in support of this record? surely they must have.
― frogbs, Friday, 16 February 2018 13:37 (six years ago) link
They only did that Grammy thing iirc.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 16 February 2018 20:46 (six years ago) link
And yes I forgot that TRON soundtrack. Them breaking the 2017 pattern is very dissapointing. They had enough new music and production credits to make it work.

"give life back to music" whips!!!
I'd love "Lose Yourself to Dance" if Pharrell were drawn and quartered and his death throes were recorded over his original vocal.

the most un-ecsstatic, un-lose yourself to dance vocal, like, ever

"Lose Yourself to Dance" definitely supports my theory that Daft Punk make shitty music on purpose

Yeah I'm not a fan of Pharrell's anemic vocals here either. "Fragments of Time" on the other hand--that song is pure joy. If I have anything to thank this album for, it's hipping me to the genius of Todd Edwards. Obviously his influence was all over Discovery, but I didn't realize it at the time
― J. Sam, Wednesday, 24 February 2021 16:03 (three years ago) link
it's weirdly lifeless for an album that starts with a track called "give life back to music" and it also really exposes their limitations as songwriters
the one track i come back to is "fragments of time" which is still really cool with todd edwards' cut-up production applied to 70s soft rock
i have never understood love for "doin' it right", it's cool until 1:25 when panda bear completely kills it with that awkward melody and then it never really goes anywhere. there's potential there for sure but it's really wasted, like a lot of tracks on this album which have a cool idea but then fail to develop it at all and drag on for too long
― ufo, Wednesday, 24 February 2021 16:15 (three years ago) link
lol that's pretty much the only vocal melody on the album that I like ("Get Lucky" works when Chic does it but doesn't work here, mostly because Pharrell is bad)

although tbrr there's potential there for sure but it's really wasted, like a lot of tracks on this album which have a cool idea but then fail to develop it at all and drag on for too long is the perfect encapsulation of the Daft Punk ethos, even on the songs I like by them

have an irrational yet also entirely rational hate for pharrell and get lucky isnt good enough as a song to make me like it anymore than when it came out, but lose yourself to dance is really good, mostly thanks to everyone on there who isnt pharrell, but esp nile rogers. i did love this album a lot when it came out, hoping it still holds up today. the panda bear, paul williams, and todd edwards songs might be my favourites, going from memory. guess it makes sense that they stop making music as DP after this one. couldnt see them repeating themselves in the RAM mode, and doubt they would want to go back to making straight up dance music as DP either as they might see it as a demotion after fully going pop.

the ballads on ram are very "something about us" mk 2, their protagonists are supposed to be robots but they also make me think of someone who's done so much coke that any normal human emotion totally overwhelms their system
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 February 2021 16:26 (three years ago) link
"lose yourself to dance" totally rules imo and it should've spawned an ilx thread for slow motion disco
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 February 2021 16:28 (three years ago) link
“instant crush” is the best song on there, the Pharrell ones are alright, the rest I don’t like. The Todd edwards one is alright I just wish the chorus vocal melody was more developed. First two songs would be fine if they had Lou gramm singing.

i keep running into flaws in the album sequence, like "touch" stops dead any momentum the record had acquired by that point lol
"touch" is sick tho, grateful for paul williams' presence

instant crush is good too. i always forget about that one.
'touch' is def not a song without development.
get lucky feels somewhat static though, despite all the different sections. the developments there feel too minimal and the melody isnt that strong.

"Get Lucky" is still fine but it's among the rare disco songs that is markedly better in single edit form.
wow "beyond" rules, i always forget
the live drums on this album are a treat throughout

the vocal mix in "Instant Crush" is really weird — the dry vocal peeking out at like 5% volume underneath the vocoder — but the synth riffs in the chorus are fantastic

― X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Wednesday, 24 February 2021 17:05 (three years ago) link
i feel like i should be more suspicious of this record than i am. it's like... explicitly a nostalgia project, to the point where it's like they recreated the very appendix of sounds and ideas they used to make discovery. but on that level it's still interesting to me as a deconstruction
i'm sure i sound like someone who thinks daft punk are beyond reproach but idk i think it's pretty awesome that they have four records that are their own hived-off soundworlds that regardless feel like they were made by the same two people (the uniting sensibility beyond their shared taste may be their perverse sense of humor which they push so far that it kind of inverts into a form of earnestness?)
