Songs Clearly Written As Set-Openers: Classic or Dud; and, if classic, S/D

I like the story about how Cheap Trick came up with "Hello There" out of necessity because they frequently were having to play shows without getting a soundcheck in beforehand, so the opening stacking of instruments was constructed so the sound man could set levels on the fly when they came on stage.

uh Sgt. Pepper's right?

― J. Sam,

Except they never played live again after writing it.

I think Robbie William's 'Let Me Entertain You' would fit in here.

VU “We’re Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together”

I had it in mind that Lou Reed's 'We're Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together' was written as a set opener for the VU, but apparently not.

Love the way Dylan recast 'Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You' as a set opener on the Rolling Thunder tour.

mr. bungle used to open their gigs by singing the "welcome back kotter" theme in spanish. that's also classic.

"Hello There" is total classic not just cuz it is a great song but becuz they specifically wrote it as a set opener where each instrument enters at a different time so their soundguy could get levels on the fly esp in the dodgy places they played early on, bowling alleys, etc, and couldn't soundcheck.

Which, ach, I realize McCain already pointed out.

Cheap Trick also typically bookended "Hello There" with "Goodnight" as a set-closer, a nice touch for symmetry fans.

I have a soft spot for Blue Oyster Cult, but one of the worst examples of this is "RU Ready To Rock" from the Spectres album. What a clunker!
