yup.
my friend did some research, and thought that these were in her budget and would sort me out.
she was absolutely spot on.
open (not a fan of closed), and comfortable, and sound really good.
now i cannot compare to others as i have been starved of such devices,
but i picked up some midlevel Sony sets for mk1 a couple of years back and the bass was far too intense for me and my ears hurt after 5 mins.

yeah open's the way to go

I have these ones (from when they were branded as MB Quart), and they sound great, and are completely indestructible):

Great for DJs or working musicians who want quality and toughness.

three weeks pass...

really wanting the sony 1000xm2 (flying in two weeks), not sure whether to buy them at a shitty 10% off or hope for a 20–25% off sale

I got the mark 1 for £100 off and they’re fantastic. Can’t see anything about the mk2 that make them worth the extra.

stet, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 00:17 (six years ago) link

phonons initially pretty uncomfortable and tinny sounding for $300 dj headphones (i snagged an open box deal and got a pair for half that)

but they’re breaking in ... better sound and more comfortable after a few weeks

will reserve judgment ...

they appear to resolve the cracking issue, and reviews claim the anc is better. also i can’t remember the last time i saw the mark 1 in a shop.

reverse-periscoping (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 01:24 (six years ago) link

found them for $100 off. the guy in the shop immediately offered to price match them against some web site i’ve never heard of. i didn’t even get around to asking about price. no idea what they’re like because i am out drinking

reverse-periscoping (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 08:07 (six years ago) link

this is the first time i’ve spent more than au$200 on headphones (not counting airpods) and they are absolutely incredible. the app seems to forget my equaliser settings but maybe i stuffed something up. everything else is better than i expected, especially the lows/highs. because it comes with a cable, it even replaces my billion year old budget sennheisers which have always hurt my ears.

reverse-periscoping (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 09:45 (six years ago) link

The Mk2s? I haven’t bothered with the app yet

stet, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 11:52 (six years ago) link

I finally smashed my Pioneer cans to bits because they were fucking terrible (and Pioneer DJ is terrible and I hate them, but that's for another thread). So bought myself a pair of HD25s and have been happy with them, especially with a $10 coiled cable via eBay. Not sure if they'd appeal to non-DJs but they haven't been mentioned in the thread and apparently are somewhat iconic: https://www.residentadvisor.net/features/1954

Eventually if I have cash to burn it would be nice to have a really high end pair of Grados or the like. OTOH with tinnitus maybe it's probably best for me not to wear headphones all the time anyhow, IDK.

davey, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 13:47 (six years ago) link

xm2s distinctly lopsided last night, fine this morning. no idea what to make of that.

reverse-periscoping (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 21:11 (six years ago) link

Finally got my Massdrop Sennheisers, which are really the first “good” pair of headphones I’ve had as an adult, and damn. It’s actually hard to do anything else when I’m listening on them because the music becomes so enveloping. Time slows down.

yeah theyre super nice!

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Tuesday, 13 March 2018 03:10 (six years ago) link

I still say they’re kind of ugly though.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Tuesday, 13 March 2018 03:43 (six years ago) link

i think the dark blue was a weird choice. they're so close to black that it looks like a mistake.

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Tuesday, 13 March 2018 03:46 (six years ago) link

In non-audiophile/sport use, has anyone used the recent aftershokz trekz stuff? I'm now just trying the older titanium model in a still, quiet environment (with Loma). In this quiet place, they are not as full and rich as my usual favorite, the plantronic fitbit.

Both Fitbits and these are very active/usage-specific, so not for everyone. I've gone through three pairs of fitbits over years, I love the depth, reasonable clarity, and the fact they don't block out surrounding ambient. nor do they bleed in quiet areas. I know few other fitbit users, but two who are super committed, as I am.

As quiet as I have the treks set now, I don't feel the "bone conduction" at all...

Oh, mine are black, they just have a really weird shape and are too big (although I guess the size is related to how good they sound). It's fine though bc I never walk around with headphones and I'm only going to use my beaters in the gym.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Tuesday, 13 March 2018 14:05 (six years ago) link

I guess it's cliche, but it's really true about how much more DETAIL you can hear in the music. One of the first things I put on was Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard, and I was able to hear stuff I never heard before like Coltrane tapping his foot on the stage to count off a tune, or, at one point, a very faint ring of a telephone inside the club.

I also put on a recording of a Bach harpsichord concerto where the harpsichord previously always sounded a little buried in the mix to me and suddenly I could hear everything.

two months pass...

What's better, the cheapest Philips or the cheapest Sennheiser?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 26 May 2018 08:25 (five years ago) link

Philips appear to have stopped doing their cheap over-ear model, so I might just go Sennheiser.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 26 May 2018 08:27 (five years ago) link

Just got these red Sony headphones bigger style. Sound is amazing and they were 60 bucks

California scheming (Ross), Sunday, 27 May 2018 18:46 (five years ago) link

five months pass...

apparently it was only a one-day sale but I snagged the Sony XB950N1 headphones for less than half price

they have the not-as-good noise cancellation compared to the active kind on the top end models, and I doubt I’ll ever use the bass boost much as the default profile has great bass reproduction for headphones, but at around $120 they were a steal and I could see comfortably wearing them for the entire work day

anyone else have sony active noise cancellers

gabbnebulous (darraghmac), Thursday, 27 December 2018 22:04 (five years ago) link

i had a pair of sennheiser (?) noise cancellers once, i guess sometimes on the bus it was effective to turn on the thingy, but the whole idea of shooting extra noise in there just didn't sit right with me

after another pair of otherwise quite trustworthy shure SE215s started coming apart at the housing (where the peg for the earbud tip meets the rest of the unit, seems to be a design flaw with them) after long-term heavy use i decided to give up on them and try something new

i think both of these were mentioned somewhere on this thread or the other one:

went back to big headphones for outside-the-home use for the first time in forever, a pair of beyerdynamics custom streets (the ones with the physically adjustable switch on the ear units to let more air in / out). they're a bit bassier and muddier than i have been used to but they work nicely, and it's a good change of pace. it's a bit more fatiguing to use them than my shures, but i think they're easier on my hearing, so that's an acceptable tradeoff/up.

also picked up a pair of KZ ATE earbuds as backup / for lighter traveling days, since they were super cheap at < $15, and they have turned out respectably. cord is a bit wiggly as advertised, and i'm not quite happy with the seal i can get on the tips, but it's fine enough that i'm not concerned to fuss with it.

j., Thursday, 27 December 2018 22:29 (five years ago) link

incidentally, the KZ ATEs have a design that is quite similar to the shure SE215s, except that they lack the sculpted wiring/cord for hanging them over the outer ear (the cord is designed to be looped that way, it's just not as effective). but the post for the tips is replaced by a much thicker cylindrical extrusion that seems to be continuous with the design of the main unit, so that there's no attachment medium (something plasticy that turns rubbery or gummy with exposure / heat on the shures) to fall apart.

Massdrop is doing the Sennheiser 650xx (or whatever they’re called) for 199 again. I have them and they are awesome.

How the Sennheisers fare with an iPhone? Got some Hifiman hps from massdrop but they really needed more powerful amplification than my phone could provide

I’ve heard some say you need a separate amp but for me they’re more than fine. Maybe they’d sound even better with an amp but they’re already a massive leap above my old Sonys (which themselves were not bad at all). Keep in mind they’re open back so they’re not gonna stand up to a noisy environment.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 31 December 2018 15:37 (five years ago) link

I would suggest using an amp with the them

тпсбlack (Spottie), Monday, 31 December 2018 17:24 (five years ago) link

Do you have a rec for a portable DAC/amp? I do most of my listening walking around the house/doing chores so it just needs to be small and comfortable enough for that kind of activity.

The Dragonfly is great and small (thumb drive size) but you'll need an adapter for the phone I think (which I think is available from AudioQueSt)

brimstead, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 04:36 (five years ago) link

Actually scratch that idk if the dragonfly is an amp too,

brimstead, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 04:37 (five years ago) link

It is a preamp/headphone amp too.

DJI, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 19:57 (five years ago) link

I just use an amp. I have the FiiO E12 Mont Blanc and love it. Think it’s discontinued now tho.

Can anyone recommend bluetooth headphones for exercise that actually stay lodged in yr damn ears? I've had to resort to over-the-ears ones to fix this but as you can imagine, it's far from an ideal solution.

I won a pair of these in a competition recently, I've heard decent things, I'll report back when I get them.

Cirrus Soundkey DAC/amp is a bit cheaper than a Dragonfly, a touch smaller, and sounds great. And it comes with both Apple and Android cables too.

my mother-in-law just got me a pair of bose quietcomfort 35 II. Kinda excited to try them out as i've been using throwaway and iphone headphones for probably twenty years now. First high-end option! Anybody got an opinion on these?

I love mine. They are comfortable enough to wear for hours and hours, and the noise cancellation is great. I've sat next to screaming babies on flights and barely noticed. The sound is pretty good too.

DJI, Thursday, 3 January 2019 16:10 (five years ago) link

cool man; vote of confidence makes me happy as the lovely lil' ol' lady who bought these for me isn't very tech savvy but just wanted to get me a nice gift. i didn't have any input in choosing the brand/make/model and was worried she maybe overpaid for nothing. maybe somebody put a good word in her ear.
i've been, more out of necessity, a guy who doesn't care much about quality headphones my whole life but i borrowed a pair of the sony noise canceling ones for a bit and was surprised at the color that leapt into some music that i had been listening to for years.
