Power tools are pretty cool actually

I live in the city now so have no use for them

I bought a power drill but I never use it as i can fix all apartment issues with a regular screwdriver and hammer or just the trust hands and fingers

I think this is a good idea for a thread

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 02:05 (five years ago) link

I want to say something positive about women here that might be stereotyping, but positively. I work for a company that is all women except me—it’s very small and in the art world—and I have never really felt excluded or like I didn’t belongg. If the situation was reversed and it was all men with one woman, I’m not sure this would be the case.

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 02:10 (five years ago) link

i dont know if

look

i dont think

how can i say

it may not have been the original wish or concept but ainui the gender-specific threads are now not rly for that type of posi thinking bridgebuilding but kinda are now for protected subtweeting style stuff and planning attacks on the other boards

whither ask chaki indeed you will say

this thread tho its mostly about power washers

topical mlady (darraghmac), Friday, 4 January 2019 02:13 (five years ago) link

got the handle fixed on that oven door but somewhere during the operation- likeliest during removal which i botched before discovering the knack- the hinges loosened and its now slow to heat up and not rly heating evenly its a problem

one solution seems to call for washers obv ill try that

topical mlady (darraghmac), Friday, 4 January 2019 02:17 (five years ago) link

Fwiw I work in a majority woman office of a woman owned firm and coincidentally or not it is by far the best work environment I’ve ever been in.

I’m drinking a japanese whiskey tonight. It’s called iwai.

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 02:23 (five years ago) link

thats nice of you but that table has to serve for various food prep and laying out of different wrenches and card games and shit and your balls, through no fault of yours it will be acknowledged, will in the normal course of being passed around with your friends accumulate grime and dirt

topical mlady (darraghmac), Friday, 4 January 2019 02:23 (five years ago) link

Super good. Crazy smooth. I’m also reading tom wolfe’s book about architecture—from bauhaud to our house—which represents pretty much the opposite of my opinion on architecture but I think the tension is good. I have to start thinking abt this stuff again bc I got a new side gig writing about architecture.

So my habit of spreading my thoughts across mumtiple posts instead of trying to fit them all into one...is that a form of manspreading?

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 02:26 (five years ago) link

i. iirc Japanese make whisky

2. smooth yeah but usually too caramel too early for my taste but ymmv and enjoy

3. grats on interesting sidejob

A manager began a meeting today by outlining and displaying on the projection wall her planning and timekeeping app, which had all these colors and bubbles and slots and icons. She did this to explain how she would be taking our design proposals for the new website from its original file and organizing it into this new compartment.

Yes, the original file was actually just a Google document on which the four of us had, in tandem chain-poetry style, typed out our single-spaced ideas using only Times New Roman 12pt font. It was about 16-20 pages long. We did it this way because Slack had too many bells and whistles.

So I 100% totally get why she was taking all of that information and putting it into a more viable format. What I didn't appreciate was her taking 25 goddamm minutes to EXPLAIN this whole situation to us after she had already made her point in the first 30 seconds and I was just exhausted and hungry after that.

pplains, Friday, 4 January 2019 02:27 (five years ago) link

manspreading - i am not a doctor and i have observed the phenomenon so this is not informed and it is not a denial but ive often wondered if bollocks are a contributory factor and if so would it matter

its bad tho its easily as bad as handbags taking up seats

topical mlady (darraghmac), Friday, 4 January 2019 02:28 (five years ago) link

I don’t taste too much caramel here. It’s much less sweet than a bourbon, for instance, but not quite as smoky as a scotch.

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 02:28 (five years ago) link

scotch doesnt in itself demand smokiness rly

topical mlady (darraghmac), Friday, 4 January 2019 02:29 (five years ago) link

No? I thought the peat made it smoky

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 02:30 (five years ago) link

I’m a pretty consistent manspreader, mainly because I’ve got this organ between my legs and such

calstars, Friday, 4 January 2019 02:35 (five years ago) link

peat itself obv v common but while it as an input is hardly ever omitted the smokiness can and is distilled out in quite a few efforts

course at that stage youre as well to go pot still irish. which you obv should.

Manspreading is for disgusting male savages, look at this dickhead:

Never Turn Your Back On Virginia Woolf (Tom D.), Friday, 4 January 2019 12:17 (five years ago) link

i probably shouldn't be posting in this thread but since nobody's made it explicit that non-binary people are not allowed...

working in a woman-centered environment has definitely given me a deeper appreciation for that relational style and i would be happy were it to become the default relational style.

manspreading is absolutely not biologically necessary and anybody who claims such sounds utterly unconvincing and ridiculous.

errang (rushomancy), Friday, 4 January 2019 14:17 (five years ago) link

Here’s a controp. Whether it’s “manspreading”or “mansplaining,” something in me always bristles against demands to “take up less space,” which was a term in my grad program people liked using. I am interested in others and always try to listen to others—my life can only be enriched by that, I feel—but for the time I am alive I am not going to actively work to make myself “smaller” in the world, I’m sorry. (Taking it as a given that “manspreading” isn’t really about taking up space on a train but is supposed to be a metaphor.)

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 14:28 (five years ago) link

I “get” that you shouldn’t be talking over people and being dismissive of others but I feel like there were already words for that. I’ve read the Solnit essay and I think the way she refers to mansplaining is more specific and gendered than the loose way I’ve heard it used out and around.

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 14:31 (five years ago) link

Also, full clarification, none of this really bothers me, obviously, or else I wouldn’t hang around the people I do.

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 14:33 (five years ago) link

yeah i'll defend that. to me manspreading is about male "self-expression" in a way that diminishes the ability of non-male forms of expression to exist. i get not liking being told to "take up less space" - i try to frame it as "am i making enough room for others to comfortably be part of this space?". and often, the answer is no, because men aren't socialized to take other people's needs into account.

errang (rushomancy), Friday, 4 January 2019 14:35 (five years ago) link

Also anyone should post here I don’t really think a men’s only thread is a good idea

Trϵϵship, Friday, 4 January 2019 14:38 (five years ago) link

well then maybe nobody should post here and people should post to the men's thread that isn't labelled "MALES ONLY" in the title

errang (rushomancy), Friday, 4 January 2019 14:45 (five years ago) link

why should nobody post here

on a COGH thread

about power washes and benches and stuff

topical mlady (darraghmac), Friday, 4 January 2019 14:47 (five years ago) link

Turning the irony switch off for a sec, if you're like me, it may be that in spite of your maleness, you're the kind of person who has *already* gone through life trying too hard not to take up space, so you feel a bit unfairly diminished by the suggestion.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 4 January 2019 15:38 (five years ago) link
