not false consciousness, more like abdicated consciousness

of course sincerity is a question of belief and round and down we go

wow, that truly is too funny not to forward, brb forwarding
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 9 February 2018 18:18 (six years ago) link
ps lol "forward" so basically it's been floating around unaltered for at least 10-15 years
it's one of those subversive conservative forwards where they can begin to admit conflicted feelings of sympathies for gay people through a familiar stereotypical perspective, all in the safe space of hating anyone that might be "rather Arabic-looking"
― Karl Malone, Friday, 9 February 2018 18:29 (six years ago) link
We were having such a time with that swooshy little gay feller!
Are gays scared of planes?
― how's life, Friday, 9 February 2018 18:42 (six years ago) link
the dialogue is so natural it must be a true story
― "oh no my cheds" man had dark to black packet (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 February 2018 18:42 (six years ago) link
damn, that one is vomit-inducing
― A is for (Aimless), Friday, 9 February 2018 18:47 (six years ago) link
The fact that it involves an "arabic-looking" person on a plane with no reference to terrorism makes me think it might even be pre-2001
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 9 February 2018 18:48 (six years ago) link
xp Yeah I thought the same - recruiting a 'gay man' to get a shot in on these awful Arabic women who all demand to be called princesses and hold up normal operating procedures. There's something to be said about the trend for racist cant to depict non-white people as obstructive and frustrating, feel like there's a long history to this depiction.
― Never changed username before (cardamon), Friday, 9 February 2018 18:52 (six years ago) link
Conservatives also often like to hold up "gay rights" as an example of our superiority to muslim countries, only to discard them the moment they are no longer comparing us to muslim countries
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 9 February 2018 18:54 (six years ago) link
Also:
having said that, I've been going on for a long time about what "belief" really means and it seems to me to be multifaceted: the performative, the social, the identitarian, the ideological, the spiritual and the unconscious all play into the concept but none of them define it or make up the totality of it. this is one of the reasons Dawkinites are idiots. memes feed into this too as they become this field of statements without depth, without sincerity, just endlessly playing at rhetoric when their real purpose is anything but the dissemination of knowledge, arcane or otherwise.
I like this a lot, can we start a thread on it
― Never changed username before (cardamon), Friday, 9 February 2018 19:00 (six years ago) link
I feel like focusing on the flight attendant when you're seated on a plane near a woman who visually resembles a language is burying the lede

wow that is noxious shit. guessing it's been around since the early 80s since both characters feel like they belong in Airplane!. or The Cannonball Run really.
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 9 February 2018 22:53 (six years ago) link
seriously who are you staying friends with that posts that kind of thing? i mean normally this thread is just dummmmb naive/inspirational/hackneyed whatever where you might roll your eyes and go "oh, uncle fred," not instantly hate uncle fred and cut him out of your life.
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 9 February 2018 22:55 (six years ago) link
It was a much, much older person, sort of friend from work, with a lot of chronic health problems who posted that.

It is totally noxious I agree. But let us roll the hate-train on to this fucking thing:

The utter narrowness though. 'Coffee', 'free time', 'favourite song' as gold standard requirements for creating something.

all those EPIC CLAPBACK viral stories
My favorite one is where he's in the crowd at a Grand Funk concert incognito and shows up Mark Farner with an improvised guitar solo.

there's a larger phenomenon of clickbait articles that beat you over the head with how funny the thing you're about to read/watch is, at which point, if it actually were funny (which it never is anyway) they have already sucked the life out of it
