I think one of the reasons the rap thread is so insular every year is that it's the only genre thread on ilm with such a strict authenticity/purity gateway. If it's too popular, it's no good. If it's too backpacker, it's also no good.

The country, indie, time machine, pop, shambhala, metal, etc threads all seem a lot more easygoing with whatever any particular poster is contributing, but the rap thread is always a goddamned minefield. Between a quarter and a third of whatever new things I'm listening to in a given year is rap or rap-adjacent, but I don't dare even try to jump in here with any of it because none of it is street enough. Bleh.

I can't do that a) because I do not frequent the threads and b) my impressions of the ilm rap cru (post goon era) are largely shaped by what takes place in the eoy poll threads. However, in the 2015 tracks thread, I had a discussion with Rev about liking rap that's not ilm rap because street shit ain't my bag. Sorry if I mischaracterized the atmosphere of the rolling rap threads, but whenever I do drop in all I see is people fighting.

1) I just made the original boring street rap thread to have a rolling thread no one else had done it

2) the name was actually a voodoo joke post, meant to be an ironic thread title as established by precedent i.e. irrelevant rap bro thread

3) I never ever intended for goon balkanization

4) the only reason I was pissed was that I had literally started a threads saying retitle the boring street rap thread to face tat, which mods opted not to do. then once deej used the death of Santana to start face tat thread, I started a thread saying lock the street rap thread

5) the great forks/40 war ensues

6) things seem to calm down and face tat thread seems to have become the rap thread. deej and forks seemed to have squashed beef

7) now, inexplicably, this thread is started for no apparent reason (imo) than to cause more unnecessary conflict, which, natch, it instantly does

.... once again. I say to all. leave the face tat thread as the one and true goon thread to rule them all. end this.

i never heard of tiron and ayomari; do they have airplay/web traction of any kind? they sorta sound BEP-ish to me, though the last Black Eyed Peas song was (wait, we're in a safe space, right?) surprisingly okay?

As an interloper, I browse these threads but limit my posts to one or two a year at the most. This is mostly because I only tend to like one or two hip-hop albums a year these days (I am an old metalhead who yells at clouds) and to be frank, usually not anything the ILM rap consiglieri anoint. But another significant part is the folks here are not big on inclusivity.

I like to think that anyone can show up in Rolling Metal and be welcome - and I assure you that it isn't some Kumbaya fest. We argue, especially with regard to sketchy bands with sketchy views. But I feel that someone not steeped in metal but who had an interest in the trends could wade in the group and feel somewhat welcome.

You guys are the cool table in the lunchroom (new board description nominee) so while I check in here from time to time, mostly I just look at Rate Your Music, listen to the bigger artists that everyone knows, and try not to do much posting here. I'm too old for cliques. I just like music.

tbh I only found them because I was wondering what Jack Davey was up to lately, but then I couldn't quit listening to the album. According to youtube, they've been doing singles for several years, but only just now released their first LP.

This idea that we fetishize street rap is so stupid, the last mega controversy in rap thread world was over LIL PEEP who is in no sense whatsoever a street rapper

Interpersonal drama on ilx is the worst thing about ilx. People knowing about and liking a bunch of different music is the best thing. The rap threads have more of the former than I typically want to waste time on. I legit don't care if my tastes don't align with more posters than they don't (I'm well aware of this having been around here since 2003). What I do care about is you wanting to target me for making an observation.
