neon genesis evangelion

I learned recently that anime in Japan is super accessible and thus DVD and Blu Ray sets are made more as collectors items than as a way to watch a show (which is why they'll put like 2-3 sidesteps per disc and then sell them for way too much $$$). Is anime on DVD/BR dumb and expensive like this in the US too?

i haven't purchased anime in a while but basically almost all of the distributors i was familiar with when i was a huge anime fan are straight up gone except for funimation. feel like box sets have only gotten cheaper over the years but there's not a lot of profit in rereleasing sets as blu-rays afaict so it doesn't happen very often (i was thinking the other day that i'd buy a blu-ray set of haibane renmei but there isn't one in the u.s.. the dvd box is still in print (funimation took over the rights from pioneer) and is only $25 (for 13 episodes))

oh but funimation did put out the lain blu ray so who knows

How is crunchyroll as a streaming platform?

it was the only place where i was able to find subtitled haibane renmei episodes recently so a+ from me

US anime home video release used to be like that - way too spread out and expensive - but in the last decade+ it's gotten more reasonable with season sets, in general

ya I just looked at amazon and complete FLCL, Bebop, and som eothers are $30 or less on BR

I also started Paranoia Agent and it's also awesome

really sad in particular that paranoia agent is oop here

the complete NGE sets are 300-400 bucks in canada :(

blows my mind that anyone, anywhere watched the dubs...for me this show is inseparable from being the kind of thinking man's anime fan teenager who had been carefully inculcated in feeling superior to such things.

i love Evangelion so much. i envy you Stevie on your first viewing! it really is a special show. i love how each episode builds and builds.

currently im watching the "Fist of the North Star" series for the first time. it's pretty much as badass as you could possibly imagine.

i'm 60 eps into fist of the north star! it just keeps getting better and better
