Badgers (dog latin), Monday, 29 January 2018 09:18 (six years ago) link

The beat in stir fry is great, the hook not so much

josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 29 January 2018 09:55 (six years ago) link

yeah the song doesn't really go anywhere, just a loop.

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 29 January 2018 09:57 (six years ago) link

It’s amazing how much of a magnifying glass people will put to this music to me

lol no, but im already sick of these animoji videos, disappointed me to see (another) song I like in one of them

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Monday, 29 January 2018 18:14 (six years ago) link

the production on this one feels a lot more.. I dunno, 3D? Shinier? Not sure about the flows so much. Lots of repetition and not as weird as what I've come to expect from Migos. It's going to take a few listens though

Badgers (dog latin), Monday, 29 January 2018 18:18 (six years ago) link

i really like stir fry, i think it's fun

this is correct

khat person (jim in vancouver), Monday, 29 January 2018 18:25 (six years ago) link

this album is good. it's overly long and you could lose a bunch of songs but that's a pretty common thing with long albums

khat person (jim in vancouver), Monday, 29 January 2018 18:25 (six years ago) link

i really like the "51 savage" song too.

wldve been more legit if it were them

lag∞n, Monday, 29 January 2018 18:30 (six years ago) link

would've been more legit if there were migos emojis that i could animate and send to friends with my awesome remix of versace

lag∞n, Monday, 29 January 2018 18:34 (six years ago) link

Would have been more legit if it was a Chief Keef-made gif of a teenage girl getting raped by a dog smoking a blunt, obv.

bhad and bhabie (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 29 January 2018 18:53 (six years ago) link

As you should know by now, anything originating w keef = more legit, authentic and worth putting a magnifying glass to than anything else.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 29 January 2018 19:08 (six years ago) link

we should definitely look into that thing he did that you just invented

keef is well known for uh making gifs and also uhh that other stuff...

J0rdan S., Monday, 29 January 2018 19:23 (six years ago) link

I can name 40 current rappers I think stand up to scrutiny better than migos as album artists and keef is one of them sure

Not sure what that joke (?) meant tho

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 29 January 2018 19:37 (six years ago) link

Reading into this as being about “authenticity” is 100% your projection tho

Everything is a joke at this point. deej never liked the Migos and never will. deej always loved keef and always will. Other people have different opinions but none of them will ever count, just because.

Culture 2 isn’t a great album, but I like it a good deal. Maybe because I like the Migos. Or perhaps because the Migos are pretty good at what they do.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 29 January 2018 20:24 (six years ago) link

I'd probably agree that MIgos aren't really 'album artists' and Culture II is showing that, but that doesn't change the fact that Culture happened to be by far the best rap album of last year, and Culture II is pretty good as well.

Frederik B, Monday, 29 January 2018 20:27 (six years ago) link

I thought Deej liked Migos????
i'm v confused

bhad and bhabie (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 29 January 2018 20:32 (six years ago) link

i do like migos, ppl are butthurt for no reason

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 29 January 2018 20:32 (six years ago) link

i'm v sad no one liked my horribly formed "joke"

24 tracks is a bit much
I would have been happy with 17 and an intro

Deej wrote the column «how excited can you really get about the migos?» in 2014 and never looked back.

https://medium.com/@daviddrake/how-excited-can-you-really-get-about-the-migos-facc03454387?source=linkShare-7c19a9696f9-1517258169

Which is... fine I guess. It just gets a bit tiresome after a while.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 29 January 2018 20:39 (six years ago) link

Son said Migos > G-Unit terms of success. What success are we measuring here? G-Unit Records? G-Unit Films? G-Unit clothing? G-Unit video games? Please help me out.

sorry, rescreened it

bhad and bhabie (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 29 January 2018 22:19 (six years ago) link

i don't think deej is wrong for questioning the attention that ppl put into the migos who are competent and formulaic and such could easily leave one cold -- the problem is that they're objectively popular and so the answer is a tautology

J0rdan S., Monday, 29 January 2018 22:41 (six years ago) link

not sure if you guys have discussed this or not but iirc they are bigger than the beatles

gr8080, Monday, 29 January 2018 22:59 (six years ago) link

i have heard many times on twitter that they are bigger and also better than the beatles to i assume its prob true

lag∞n, Monday, 29 January 2018 23:03 (six years ago) link

jordan otm -- popular artist is given attention because they're popular

k3vin k., Monday, 29 January 2018 23:13 (six years ago) link

The thing about Culture is that it's 'formulaic' only insofar as it dugs into the very essence of it's genre and stays there. It's such a pure sonic distillation of what they do, triplets, quarter notes, slow beats, ad libs, without anything to disturb the magic. No personal pain as with Future, no outsized personality like Young Thug, not really any melodies, no distracting narratives, everything is just moment to moment clashes of sounds, differing intensities. Vince Staples claimed he was inspired by club music on Big Fish Theory, but to my mind it was Culture that made rap sound like dance music, all about movement. I freaking love that album. I think I've said it before, but to me it's forerunners are albums like Funcrusher Plus.

Frederik B, Monday, 29 January 2018 23:26 (six years ago) link

i love migos idc they have a strong sound, i dont know if competent and formulaic is any sort of current consensus on them but its kinda interesting contrasted to the opinion on them when they first came out which was technically deficient novelty act, smh cant get no respect

lag∞n, Monday, 29 January 2018 23:29 (six years ago) link

three months pass...

any more thoughts on Culture II? Still don't feel like I've scratched the surface properly. It sounds at once poppier but also less immediate to its predecessor. I like 'Made Men' quite a lot but a lot of the songs kind of drag a bit?

brand new universal harvester (dog latin), Friday, 4 May 2018 13:54 (six years ago) link

About half of the tracks are at least good to very good, but it all still feels like just a bunch of songs. There's no thought to it. Just another day on the job. Two weeks later they probably could have released an equally long and equally good album. Which tells you something about how nice they are even when they're on autopilot, I guess. But it's mostly frustrating.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 4 May 2018 14:31 (six years ago) link

haven't revisited it in full, but i do return to some of the highlights. mostly "too much jewelry," "too playa," and "narcos."
