Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen - Console/PC

devvvine, Saturday, 27 January 2018 22:36 (six years ago) link

Metroid: Samus Returns - 3DS
Yooka-Laylee - console/computer

adam the (abanana), Sunday, 28 January 2018 04:27 (six years ago) link

man, this year a well-reviewed Metroid 2D game came out and was promptly forgotten

Nhex, Sunday, 28 January 2018 05:35 (six years ago) link

i didn't like the visual style of it and heard mostly lukewarm things about the gameplay. also the DS not so exciting this year for obvious reasons

ciderpress, Sunday, 28 January 2018 05:39 (six years ago) link

I love the fact that this year we get to nominate:

Starfox 2 - SNES

But also feel like we should be able to vote for the snes classic mini itself. Obviously most of the games are non-2017 games but using this console is definitely a 2017 gaming experience, and a bloody good one too.

JimD, Sunday, 28 January 2018 09:29 (six years ago) link

A Hat in Time - PC/PS4/XB1

ciderpress, Sunday, 28 January 2018 15:51 (six years ago) link

Dead Cells - Computer
Rain World - Computer/Console
Shovel Knight: Spectre of Torment - Computer/Console/Handheld

ufo, Monday, 29 January 2018 08:38 (six years ago) link

Samus Returns was fine but it's only really notable as the first decent Metroid game released in a decade, it really suffers in comparison to the best of the series and similar indie titles (which I played a lot of this year)

ufo, Monday, 29 January 2018 08:44 (six years ago) link

cinco paus - iOS

C&P should have an Un Certain Regard section for stuff along those lines.

thos beads (jamescobo), Tuesday, 30 January 2018 18:38 (six years ago) link

We already have a Biggest Disappointment section, so why not?

Nhex, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 19:38 (six years ago) link

What I'll do is add a new category for this year: best platform. the point is to vote for whichever platform offered the best entertainment this year. so no nominating the original game boy because you got one with a copy of daedalian opus on ebay or something.

Here are the nominees so far,
PS4
PS3
Xbox One
Switch
3DS
Vita
Mobile
Steam
SNES Classic

add some others if you want!

what is "ghost recon shadow warrior"? there's a 2011 release with a similar but not same name...

flippy bard (Will M.), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 20:50 (six years ago) link

Here's the list, will update as stuff is added

Please make sure to give me the right names, spell it good, and tell me what to checkmark it under.

flippy bard (Will M.), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 20:52 (six years ago) link

Switch has got to be the runaway winner in that category

Nhex, Thursday, 8 February 2018 04:21 (six years ago) link

it should be but do we all have one now is the question

flippy bard (Will M.), Thursday, 8 February 2018 14:51 (six years ago) link

holy moly i just re-read that sentence and it makes no sense. what i mean is, do enough people have a switch for it to win?

flippy bard (Will M.), Thursday, 8 February 2018 14:56 (six years ago) link

i understood if it makes you feel any better
and i think the answer is gonna be yes - the system has already outsold the Wii U's lifetime. but that's why we're polling, to find out, I guess!

I'm an idiot, the correct full name is Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands

The Troops™ (jamescobo), Thursday, 8 February 2018 18:11 (six years ago) link

does it seem like we have fewer games nominated this year than in previous ones?

Mordy, Thursday, 8 February 2018 18:12 (six years ago) link

Doki Doki Literature Club - PC

methanietanner, Thursday, 8 February 2018 18:14 (six years ago) link

was that this year? i've heard good things about it...

Mordy, Thursday, 8 February 2018 18:24 (six years ago) link

the number of nominations this year feels lower by volume but higher by overall quality. like my #10 this year would probably be better than my #4 or #5 most years.

The Troops™ (jamescobo), Thursday, 8 February 2018 21:48 (six years ago) link

i was thinking the same. i am interested in the idea of a new approach to voting because my points were going to get spread woefully thin this year

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 8 February 2018 21:57 (six years ago) link

"steam" as a platform but mobile not separated into ios & android feels wrong.

adam the (abanana), Friday, 9 February 2018 09:31 (six years ago) link

splitting ios and android just feels meaningless, like, what's the significant difference? anyone who votes for one or the other is just voting for what device they have, not the relative quality of one or the other. "steam" is there because simply putting "computer" feels too broad, and maybe someone wants to nominate e.g. humble Monthly or GOG.com or Origin (lol) instead?

flippy bard (Will M.), Friday, 9 February 2018 15:56 (six years ago) link

Crazy Taxi Gazillionaire - Mobile

devvvine, Friday, 9 February 2018 16:00 (six years ago) link

Last year we had over 170 nominations, and we're only at 87 now, so might be less? but also every year less people have nominated and voted in coint and plick so it might be a function of that :(

im definitely gonna check out doki doki literature club some time soon, that sounds weiiiird and cool

flippy bard (Will M.), Friday, 9 February 2018 17:55 (six years ago) link

I mean once everything I played on Switch is nominated that basically covers what I can vote for. It’s a shame if there’s less diverse types of games on our list I guess but I for one have had no enthusiasm for desktop gaming in ages and very little for phones.

direct to consumer online mattress brand (silby), Friday, 9 February 2018 18:09 (six years ago) link

i kinda feel like there's an ebb and flow to game 'diversity' - like years like this where almost anyone who wants one already has a Big 3 Console. when the ps5 comes out and there's a split in the market and people are looking to mobile and computer for stuff to play while they wait for the next gen to get "worth it" and get jaded with their "old gen" console, that's when the quality weirdness starts cropping up!

flippy bard (Will M.), Friday, 9 February 2018 18:22 (six years ago) link

yeah, that's a good point.

Karl Malone, Friday, 9 February 2018 18:34 (six years ago) link

Realm Revolutions - browser (computer/mobile)

not saying it's a great game but I played it too much not to nominate it

adam the (abanana), Friday, 9 February 2018 22:38 (six years ago) link

two weeks pass...

5 days of noms left!

Bubsy Visits the James Turrell Retrospective (PC/Mac)

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 17:33 (six years ago) link

Bubsy is so cool, you start in an art museum, looking at minimalist art, then it just goes completely off the rails. it is by the anarchic design team Arcane Kids, who previously made the cool and utterly bizarre Sonic Dreams Collection

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 17:35 (six years ago) link

was that last year? man it was so weird and great

flippy bard (Will M.), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 18:10 (six years ago) link

I bought a lot of Steam games the past three months, but on closer inspection I don't think many are from last year. None really worth nomming anyway.

xp originally 2013. didn't realise they'd updated it, is up there with frog fractions.

devvvine, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 19:06 (six years ago) link

is the remastering significant enough to put it on the poll again?

Tales of Berseria - PS4/PC

surprised nobody's nom'd the new Ys game; I haven't played it (waiting to get it on Switch later this year) but I've heard nothing but effusive praise about it

The Troops™ (jamescobo), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 17:15 (six years ago) link

i heard the localization was so bad on initial release that they redid the entire thing recently including voice acting, so i think a lot of ppl held off on playing it because of that.

ciderpress, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 17:58 (six years ago) link

also the pc version got delayed and didn't make it out in 2017 so it's more of a 2018 game unless you were an impatient ps4 haver

ciderpress, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 18:01 (six years ago) link

hot take: this was a p good year for videogames

Gran Turismo Sport (ps4)
Wipeout Omega Collection (ps4)
Skyrim VR (psvr)
Skyrim (Switch)
Doom VFR (psvr)
Doom (Switch)
Statik (psvr)
Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin (psvr)
Farpoint (psvr)
Star Trek Bridge Crew (psvr)
Superhot VR (psvr) [also maybe superhot non-vr, on ps4?]
Accounting+ (psvr)
Pokemon Ultra Sun (3ds)
Pokemon Ultra Moon (3ds)
Animal Crossing Pocket Camp (ios)

Haha wow this nomination list is basically a long list of PSVR games I've bought and not yet played. There were about 50 others released in 2017 too, most of which I've not even heard of but some may well be worth a nom.

JimD, Monday, 5 March 2018 23:49 (six years ago) link

Oh also

Pinball FX3 (on everything)

JimD, Monday, 5 March 2018 23:50 (six years ago) link

And
