Don't know what I was expecting at #1, but it wasn't Charli XCX.

Moodles, Thursday, 25 January 2018 20:13 (six years ago) link

Thanks, pollrunners! That CXCX song has some nice bleeps in it but is very underwhelming.

emil.y, Thursday, 25 January 2018 20:14 (six years ago) link

I was also somewhat surprised that Rita Ora almost made it. I didn't have any hopes after the lukewarm reception it got in TSJ.

daavid, Thursday, 25 January 2018 20:15 (six years ago) link

two jlin songs in the top 177 probably bodes well for the album

faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 25 January 2018 20:16 (six years ago) link

Taylor with four in the top 177... think she'll crack top 20 in albums?

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Thursday, 25 January 2018 20:20 (six years ago) link

Thanks poll runners! Massively satisfying roll-out, and as a ride or die Charli XCX fan, "Boys" at #1 is the cherry and powdered sugar on top. Even if it's not her best song. This year, even.

Sushi and the Banchan (Spectrist), Thursday, 25 January 2018 20:29 (six years ago) link

Thx pollrunners

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Thursday, 25 January 2018 20:30 (six years ago) link

lmao at #666

and yes thank you poll runners! the images are esp fabulous.
It was also amusing to scroll through them in between results and note how so many of the bands have a blonde woman lead singer + dudes (with Alvvays as the exception that kinda confirms the trend)

I was bummed not to see Phoebe Bridgers. "Funeral" was either my #1 or #2. I know a couple of her other tracks were nominated though.

xxp Only two Björk songs were nominated! But in theory that should have helped. Suspect the album will do alright.

Thanks, poll runners! Great as ever.

Jeff W, Thursday, 25 January 2018 21:00 (six years ago) link

'new rules' is insanely catchy. i'd never even heard of dua lipa before the rollout. i guess i just sorta burrowed deeper into my own taste this year.

'akanamali' is beautiful.

great results this year, i thought. i expected to be totally bored and out of touch with it, but didn't end up feeling that way at all. i did miss a few posters' reactions, though, especially lex's histrionics

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 25 January 2018 21:06 (six years ago) link

this rollout was dope! very nicely done, ILM and poll runners.

davey, Thursday, 25 January 2018 21:09 (six years ago) link

Wait did Charli XCX won this one for real? Ew worst ILM #1 of all time. Not even a top 10 song for her.

The rest of the results were overall pretty agreeable though! Good rollout JF!

Hilarious joke #1 but hurry up and post the real one.

congrats to all pollrunners!

if it's any consolation Boys isn't anywhere near the all-time list:

2012 Todd Terje - Inspector Norse (1676 points, 45 votes, 7 #1 votes)
2012 Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe (1528 points, 48 votes, 6 #1 votes)
2015 Grimes - Realiti (Demo) (1357 points, 37 votes, 9 #1 votes)
2016 Rae Sremmurd - Black Beatles (1276 points, 37 votes, 5 #1 votes)
2013 Daft Punk - Get Lucky (1212 points, 38 votes, 3 #1 votes)
2014 Tinashe ft. Schoolboy Q - 2 on (1190 points, 39 votes, 4 #1 votes)
2013 Mariah Carey ft. Miguel - #Beautiful (1138 points, 37 votes, 4 #1 votes)
2011 Azealia Banks ft. Lazy Jay - 212 (1111 points, 34 votes, 2 #1 votes)
2011 Lana Del Rey - Video Games (1107 points, 40 votes, 2 #1 votes)
2015 Fetty Wap - Trap Queen (1063 points, 37 votes, 2 #1 votes)

CRJ is #2 on the all-time points list, ahead of every other year's #1. Good.

Tarr Yang Preminger Argento Carpenter (Eric H.), Thursday, 25 January 2018 21:55 (six years ago) link

This was a great countdown even if the top three went all ILM £20 music prize.

Matt DC, Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:05 (six years ago) link

I think New Rules was a more worthy winner but I dont hate Boys. At least Bodak Yellow didnt take it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:15 (six years ago) link

21 votes is insanely low, where would that have got you last year?

Matt DC, Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:20 (six years ago) link

I like the lack of consensus though... only consensus artist could je Kendrick Lamar with two songs in here. In previous years we’ve had 3 or 5 by the same artist and a very predictable top 3.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:24 (six years ago) link

763 points would have been 5th last year, I think.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:24 (six years ago) link

only consensus artist could [b]e Kendrick Lamar with two songs in here

Lorde and Dua Lipa both also had two appearances each.

But yeah, six songs from three artists (not counting Avalon Emerson and her various remixes) is an all-time low record I'd think. Viva variety!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:26 (six years ago) link

iirc we had about 20% fewer ballots this year but also there just wasn't a clear consensus pick. CRJ was in the lead for most of the voting period but the top 3 were pretty close throughout.

? (seandalai), Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:31 (six years ago) link

xp and Kelela, so eight songs from four artists

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:34 (six years ago) link

Thank u seandalai and Johnny Fever! Excellent poll as always.

I was also somewhat surprised that Rita Ora almost made it. I didn't have any hopes after the lukewarm reception it got in TSJ.

This was my number three. I didn't really it had much support on here. Nice to see it get so close.

This was one of the most exciting polls I've seen on here. It truly felt so open after last year's predictable winner. I had Boys higher on my list, but in the end I wish it had gone to New Rules. The video and song have had incredible replay value over the last six months. As for Boys, after almost writing her off in 2016 with that terrible EP and single, it felt good to have her back with such a charming song that felt so effortless (something she did over and over on those first two albums). It's definitely not in the same league as Superlove (which should have won the 2013 poll IMO), I do think it's one the best things she's done.

I love all the songs in the top five, so I'm happy. I can understand why people were disappointed with these results. I doubt much from this top 10 will do well when/if we do the end of decade vote in a few years. I think the album list next week is going to have a much more predictable and crowd pleasing result.

Thanks to Seandalai and Johnny Fever. Great work as always.

eh my bristling at "boys" at no. 1 is p minor compared to how much i enjoyed the whole unpredictable rollout

i am far less aligned with the winners on the albums than the singles which may be good news for some of you.

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Friday, 26 January 2018 00:01 (six years ago) link

lol! I forgot about that

Boys, New Rules, the CRJ video, Bad Liar......*exactly* the kinds of videos my 9 year old goddaughter wants to watch with me! (It makes me see them with new eyes)
