"T-Shirt" would be the funniest possible 78 imo

lol I didn't even consider that

would love to see Love Galore at #1

Dan S, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:33 (six years ago) link

i voted drew barrymore, guess love galore is more likely though

ufo, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:33 (six years ago) link

best song I've heard today for the 1st time is the black madonna one. Still dont care much for the slowdive song or the remix

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:33 (six years ago) link

"mask off" and "t-shirt" placing is gonna be a real dull stretch for me but enjoy yourselves i guess

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:34 (six years ago) link

ooh, the imago household threw quite a few points at Drew Barrymore...

#TeamHailing (imago), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:34 (six years ago) link

not sure I ever got all the way through "mask off" (I did vote for T-Shirt tho)

rob, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:35 (six years ago) link

I just remembered "Bad and Boujee" only placed around 30 or something? so I'm really doubting "T-Shirt" at this point

Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:36 (six years ago) link

B&B was #25.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:36 (six years ago) link

pffft never underestimate this board's desire to stick it to deej

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:36 (six years ago) link

things are placing with only 13 votes right up to the top 10 - it's an absolute lottery tbh

#TeamHailing (imago), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:36 (six years ago) link

not really hearing much of Pygmalion on this Avalon Emerson remix, more like the In Mind remixes ep imo

rob, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:37 (six years ago) link

Ooh I'll check it out, though "otherworldly" is sorta what I didn't want from Slowdive this year. Felt like "Sugar for the Pill" demystified my love for them in a much needed way.

geoffreyess, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:38 (six years ago) link

I've been predicting New Rules as song of the year.

MarkoP, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:38 (six years ago) link

T-Shirt has always seemed like the most likely winner to me (I called Black Beatles early last year too, without even being aware of its use in the mannequin challenge thing) - it got its own thread and early enough in the year to just linger in ILM consciousness throughout and doesn't seem to have a controversy factor like Bodak Yellow.

nashwan, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:38 (six years ago) link

tbf, I haven't listened to Pygmalion in like a decade

rob, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:38 (six years ago) link

I was noticing the lower point totals this year, for example Flesh Without Blood, which placed at #11 in 2015 had 542 points. I'm wondering if this is because of fewer voters or general lack of consensus

Dan S, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:39 (six years ago) link

i guess it'd just be kind of a bummer for me if a song that completely evaporates from my memory after i hear it turns out to be no. 1 (deej otm)

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:39 (six years ago) link

honestly the only reason I'm predicting CRJ is cause she always did great even w/ vote splitting, and there's none with her this year

Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:40 (six years ago) link

t-shirt is coming

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:40 (six years ago) link

Would be nice if JF said there was a massive curveball we've not considered yet to come...

ha same here tbh

faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:41 (six years ago) link

i'm glad bodak yellow didn't win, though i really don't have anything against the song. just the rapturous reactions always seemed a little out-of-place to me.

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:41 (six years ago) link

i like our top ten quite a lot.

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:41 (six years ago) link

It's some of both. Spoiler: no song is even close to 1,000 points this year.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:42 (six years ago) link

Let's break the seal on the top ten...

10 FUTURE "Mask Off" [364 points, 14 votes, 1 first place vote]
https://youtu.be/xvZqHgFz51I

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:43 (six years ago) link

I do wonder if Bodak Yellow would have placed higher if it wasn't the critical consensus pick of the year.

MarkoP, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:43 (six years ago) link

it's been both fewer voters and less consensus in general

Bodak Yellow received about 3.45 points per voter, while Flesh Without Blood received about 4 points per voter

went to youtube to listen to Mask Off again and it started at 2:04 so I guess that answers that

what's up flute loop

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:44 (six years ago) link

#52 "Unmask Me" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> #10 "Mask Off"

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:45 (six years ago) link

flute loop is sweet, but I'm very tired of dreary Future
besides 2017's best flute jam was Bum Bum Tam Tam: https://youtu.be/_P7S2lKif-A
(there's even a remix with Future if you must)

rob, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:45 (six years ago) link

Back in March I thought I was the only one who thought "Mask Off" my favorite.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:46 (six years ago) link

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:47 (six years ago) link

Or in this case a maskup

xxxxp but

don't get this twisted: t-shirt is just a really good song; deej's weird refusal of it conceivably being a hit was minor comedy

mask off is good
tshirt is good too

i don't think i like bodak yellow after reading the ilm thread

somehow i missed that whole thread but reading it now i feel the opposite, i like it more

marcos, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:53 (six years ago) link

i was kinda kidding lol

brimstead, Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:54 (six years ago) link

anyway, I like Mask Off, but I always thought the part where Future keeps rapping in the original flow when the drums drop out was a bit weird

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 25 January 2018 16:54 (six years ago) link

What makes this song resonate for me above a million other similar bits of luxury braggardry is the line "These expensive/these is red bottoms/these is bloody shoes," which is not only catchy but lays bare the violence of capitalism in a way I haven't heard in other songs. The louboutins are literally "bloody" -- she acknowledge that she has stepped on and crushed others to get where she is. This line works not only on that sort of personal ruthless, status climber level but also describes the "blood" of the sweatshop labor that went into making her luxury item:
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/jun/17/revealed-the-romanian-site-where-louis-vuitton-makes-its-italian-shoes
"Red" is even more appropriate here being not only associated with blood but with labor. At the end of the day she openly admits to identifying with being a "boss" and that "worker(s)" are contemptible. And being a boss means she makes "bloody moves," i.e. she acknowledges that being a capitalist inherently requires violence. Moreover, she doesn't have to *dance* (sell her labor) because she "makes money move" (freely moves capital across borders).
