Ooh I'll check it out, though "otherworldly" is sorta what I didn't want from Slowdive this year. Felt like "Sugar for the Pill" demystified my love for them in a much needed way.

I've been predicting New Rules as song of the year.

T-Shirt has always seemed like the most likely winner to me (I called Black Beatles early last year too, without even being aware of its use in the mannequin challenge thing) - it got its own thread and early enough in the year to just linger in ILM consciousness throughout and doesn't seem to have a controversy factor like Bodak Yellow.

tbf, I haven't listened to Pygmalion in like a decade

I was noticing the lower point totals this year, for example Flesh Without Blood, which placed at #11 in 2015 had 542 points. I'm wondering if this is because of fewer voters or general lack of consensus

i guess it'd just be kind of a bummer for me if a song that completely evaporates from my memory after i hear it turns out to be no. 1 (deej otm)

honestly the only reason I'm predicting CRJ is cause she always did great even w/ vote splitting, and there's none with her this year

it's been both fewer voters and less consensus in general

somehow i missed that whole thread but reading it now i feel the opposite, i like it more

anyway, I like Mask Off, but I always thought the part where Future keeps rapping in the original flow when the drums drop out was a bit weird

What makes this song resonate for me above a million other similar bits of luxury braggardry is the line "These expensive/these is red bottoms/these is bloody shoes," which is not only catchy but lays bare the violence of capitalism in a way I haven't heard in other songs. The louboutins are literally "bloody" -- she acknowledge that she has stepped on and crushed others to get where she is. This line works not only on that sort of personal ruthless, status climber level but also describes the "blood" of the sweatshop labor that went into making her luxury item:

"Red" is even more appropriate here being not only associated with blood but with labor. At the end of the day she openly admits to identifying with being a "boss" and that "worker(s)" are contemptible. And being a boss means she makes "bloody moves," i.e. she acknowledges that being a capitalist inherently requires violence. Moreover, she doesn't have to *dance* (sell her labor) because she "makes money move" (freely moves capital across borders).
