I like rather than love this one but this is an excellent run of songs in any case.

Good start to the day. Undercover is a highlight from the album. Happy to see it here.

I really should have voted for Big For Your Boots. Probably the most fun song of the year. The way he says, "boots" will never get old. I wish the rest of the album was that good.

I've only listened to the Fever Ray album once. I enjoyed it at the time, but for some reason I haven't felt the need to go back to it yet. Some of it did seem a bit, Fever Ray/Knife by numbers.

Disco Tits is pretty enjoyable. Probably the closest I've come to really liking anything of hers since Habits. Totally agree with Johnny Fever that she's the lesser of the Toves. Mistakes really should be in here somewhere.

Only discovered the Black Madonna song when going through the Spotify playlist last month. Such a beautifully produced track. It was on my long list.

Can I just say that that Arcade Fire song is actually good and it wouldn't have totally surprised me that it would make the top 20. I mean, I didn't vote for it, but I like it. Rest of the album is terrible.

silverfish, Thursday, 25 January 2018 14:57 (six years ago) link

A BIG YES to The Black Madonna (but then I did actually vote for "Everything Now", the first AF track I've liked in many years, so you don't want to listen to me).

mike t-diva, Thursday, 25 January 2018 14:59 (six years ago) link

the fact that it actually got a few votes but angered the overwhelming majority made it perhaps the most effective joke entry ever

Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:00 (six years ago) link

Agree with "Disco Tits" being just an OK track. I still resent ILM for ignoring "Habits" when it first came out.

daavid, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:01 (six years ago) link

Black Madonna made my long list too, it was a nice discovery from nominations. i like the piano solo towards the end

didn't Habits place decently in 2014? nowhere near as good as Disco Tits

ufo, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:03 (six years ago) link

i thought it came top 20

15 KESHA "Praying" [347 points, 10 votes, 1 first place vote]

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:05 (six years ago) link

by no means the best track on a great album but lovely to see it here

#TeamHailing (imago), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:06 (six years ago) link

I admired the hell out of her this year but didn't actually enjoy any of the music, despite my best efforts

Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:07 (six years ago) link

Given everything she's gone through I'm glad she gets to make music again but... I still find her voice extremely annoying.

Roz, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:08 (six years ago) link

I like the most because it's grinding a stiletto heel into Dr. Luke's tainted legacy like extinguishing a cigarette butt.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:08 (six years ago) link

Rainbow ended up growing on me a lot over the last couple of months. Praying was an instant classic. My fifth vote to place.

kitchen person, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:09 (six years ago) link

I voted (quite high) for Spaceship, myself

#TeamHailing (imago), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:10 (six years ago) link

can admire the sentiment here and it's a great performance but i didn't really care much for it as a song unfortunately

ufo, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:10 (six years ago) link

Actually, yes it did (#16)... but it was originally released in early 2013 and I didn't like the single version that became a hit.

I know I'm just being picky

daavid, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:11 (six years ago) link

oh I had no idea there was even a 2013 version

ufo, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:12 (six years ago) link

They did a slight rework of it, I wouldn't say it was a different version. Still, it kind of ruined it for me. Also the original video was way better.

daavid, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:17 (six years ago) link

glad this placed here

holy shit!

Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:26 (six years ago) link

brb gonna learn to play the intro on the piano

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:27 (six years ago) link

I admire the sentiment of Praying but voted for Woman as it's clearly the better song

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:27 (six years ago) link

it's the 90s!

this is quite good. i'll accept it while speedy ortiz have a year or two off. where did 'raising the skate' place that one year again?

#TeamHailing (imago), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:28 (six years ago) link

charly bliss >>>>>> speedy ortiz

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:28 (six years ago) link

I listened to this album in binges all year. Like, 20 times one week, take a couple weeks off, 20 times again in another week. "Ruby" is probably still my favorite track, even though it was re-recorded and changed just enough to make it seem ever so slightly less perfect.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:28 (six years ago) link

Voted for Glitter, but wasn't sure it would place this high.

MarkoP, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:28 (six years ago) link

"Julia" was the standout for me

Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:29 (six years ago) link

I called it. What a song! What an album! What a band!

kitchen person, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:29 (six years ago) link

I never expected to like a 90s throwback act so much but this is such a good song, on such a good record.

Roz, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:29 (six years ago) link

charly bliss >>>>>> speedy ortiz

we don't really have to do this

Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:29 (six years ago) link

oh i'd also figured this wasn't placing, nice to see it here. DQ is maybe my favourite from the album but they're so good at what they do.

ufo, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:30 (six years ago) link

When I sent my brother my albums list last week, he gave me responses to everything I'd voted for. My favourite one was what he said about the Charly Bliss album,

"why can't more indie bands do pop-rock like this instead of whatever it is The Horrors do"

kitchen person, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:33 (six years ago) link

xxp was responding to imago's assertion that charly bliss is "acceptable" in speedy's absence

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:33 (six years ago) link

lol xp

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:33 (six years ago) link

Charly Bliss!! I assume this benefited from being the only track nominated, would've been happy voting for any of them.

devvvine, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:34 (six years ago) link

For another fun 90s throwback album from this year, I recommend Partner's "In Search of Lost Time", though I still prefer Charly Bliss.

MarkoP, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:35 (six years ago) link

Westermarck was the one for me, I lost interest in this album as the days got shorter and I'd never vote for an individual track off this but glad to see them place.

(xpost - the Partner album is better!)

Matt DC, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:35 (six years ago) link

ahh missed that, apologies vc

Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:35 (six years ago) link

yeah I think I prefer Westermarck too, but it's all fairly bracing stuff. i like it! no beef

#TeamHailing (imago), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:36 (six years ago) link

Even after umpteen thousand listens, I still haven't been able to zero in one person Eva's voice reminds me of. I was sure it was a dead ringer for someone else, but I've decided it's basically a hybrid of Kim Deal and Kay Hanley.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:40 (six years ago) link

Always thought that the first few seconds of this album were the worst moment on it, in general they'd benefit from doing a bit more rhythmically but I suspect they've got an amazing follow-up in them.

Matt DC, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:41 (six years ago) link

Seeing Charly Bliss last year in The Hug and Pint, Glasgow was so much fun. They were genuinely enthralled at how well received they were (for being outside the US). Great album / tracks.

call me by your name..or Finn (fionnland), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:41 (six years ago) link

For me it's Renee Zellweger in Empire Records lol xposts

Roz, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:43 (six years ago) link

aw JF you did the arcade fire/sheeran before i was up and about to add to the playlist
probably for the best

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:44 (six years ago) link

lol you might be on to something xp

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 January 2018 15:44 (six years ago) link

Definitely sounds like Kay Hanley to me - which gives the whole record the feel of a lost Josie & The Pussycats second album.
