will be interesting to see how many of these end up in here "It Is Happening Again": Tim writes about songs from 2017

Idly wondering how different this list would have been if everyone had voted in November, ie before most of the end-of-year lists were published. There's a lot of here that generated virtually no discussion here but appeared prominently in several lists and accompanying playlists.

The J Hus song is cool. Thanks for the introduction!

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:09 (six years ago) link

Like the album but my favorite track is "Fleeting Moments of Freedom (Wooo)."

Salt Lake City Motorcycle Accident Nerve Damage Lawyer (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:10 (six years ago) link

Get in there! Original is great but the remix is a great big driving monster and probably the best thing avalon emerson has done so far ( which sayin' somethin')

what I'm finding genuinely perplexing is the massive kpop showing when that rolling thread isn't really all that active/populated (with the possibly key difference that the last month is mostly "who should we vote for?" talk which I guess I should try for my own pet rolling threads). forapper as influential as Tim really

Grafts is pretty nice!

rob, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:10 (six years ago) link

there are kpop lurkers

ciderpress, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:12 (six years ago) link

it was a very very strong year for kpop & i think enough non-thread regulars heard things via TSJ and nominations as well

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:13 (six years ago) link

Wow wow wow @ "Grafts". I can't believe I never listened to Kara-Lis Coverdale before.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:14 (six years ago) link

but the remix is a great big driving monster

Right. The LP version is cold and not really my thing, but the Avalon Emerson embellishment is sort of...cozy?

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:14 (six years ago) link

It's totally enveloping yeah

i know kore-eda (or something), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:16 (six years ago) link

xp it's the coldness of the original, with that ominous bass, that make it great imo!

Dan S, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:17 (six years ago) link

I don't post all that much in the k-pop thread but I listen to k-pop all year long and talk about it elsewhere. I could've done a better job nominating some tunes this year though.

Massively on board with everything Avalon Emerson's doing

abcfsk, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:17 (six years ago) link

xp that said, they're both great, and I'm glad it placed

also loved and voted for Grafts, didn't expect it to show up

26 LORDE "The Louvre" [271 points, 8 votes]
https://youtu.be/ZQkdwymDanE

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:20 (six years ago) link

If the K-pop thread has coalesced around a small number of songs then it makes sense they're well represented here. The afropop thread has hundreds of tracks on it and I'm sure a lot of them got one or two votes but there are relatively few rallying points this year - although I bet one or two are still to come here.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:20 (six years ago) link

cor this avalan emerson remix is banging, much better than the original and the other AE track imo

the last section of grafts where it reverberates out into a tired evening sky always makes me feel better, what more could you ask for

ogmor, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:20 (six years ago) link

everyone should not listen to this, but listen to the dawn richard song of this title instead, which lorde basically nicks the idea of and makes 300x worse

#TeamHailing (imago), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:21 (six years ago) link

sorta hope "green light" didn't outpace this though i know it did

one of the better tracks on the record still

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:23 (six years ago) link

Well, both songs are named after the most famous art gallery in the world, but that's about it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:23 (six years ago) link

'grafts' is the first track that is totally new to me that i enjoyed, very pretty. 'adrift' remix is the avalon emerson that i voted for

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:24 (six years ago) link

guys, you can write and sing two excellent songs about losing your mind in The Louvre

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:24 (six years ago) link

everyone should not listen to anything imago ever says because he is an idiot with shitty opinions lol

JB, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:24 (six years ago) link

only an afropop lurker but there's a few i really hope make it and some that i'd be surprised if they didn't

this was one of the best Lorde tracks but I hope this doesn't mean there's going to be any more than Green Light still to come

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:25 (six years ago) link

track is all about the muffled bass in the chorus

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:25 (six years ago) link

broadcast the boom boom boom

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:25 (six years ago) link

The Dawn song is sonically great but I've been able to take it entirely seriously due to the very solemn and reverant way she sings "your wonderful parts", which is supreme deadpan if nothign else.

I approve of the Lorde album even if I don't really care about 2/3 of it, but the "who cares, still the Louvre" line won me over first time I heard it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:25 (six years ago) link

and ofc "down the back, but who cares, still the louvre"

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:26 (six years ago) link

xp lol

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:26 (six years ago) link

her delivery on that is perfect yeah

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:26 (six years ago) link

both songs have a central lyrical conceit about hanging a person or people in the louvre! anyway w/e

#TeamHailing (imago), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:26 (six years ago) link

"Homemade Dynamite" was my jam on this album.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:27 (six years ago) link

homemade dynamite is the best one. it's the only song i've heard that seems to draw its influence directly from 06 nelly furtado/timbaland

GRAFTS MADE IT

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:30 (six years ago) link

xp i hear & like that but the song itself doesn't grab me much

ufo, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:30 (six years ago) link

tbc I like that so much kpop has shown. We've all read lots of eoy lists at this point, so getting a strong sample of stuff I don't encounter anywhere else is the ideal for this poll. That said, it feels like the poll has basically diverged from ILM itself at this point.

Akanamali should place. I figured "Mad Over You" would too, but not sure now. There were def an absurd number of afropop nominations (a problem I helped make).

this is pretty tiresome

xxxp preferred 'van gogh' off Redemption

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:31 (six years ago) link

If I had to guess I'd go with 'Akrakabo' and 'Leg Over' but who even knows at this stage.

In general I can only think of 12 or 13 tracks which will definitely place and that leaves room for a lot of curveballs.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:32 (six years ago) link

i love it when ilx polls tap into the subconscious and get ahead of themselves

My favourite thing about The Louvre is, "I overthink your p-punctuation use".

i don't think i've ever noticed this song's now incredibly obvious relationship with "say it right"

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:35 (six years ago) link

Akanamali should place.

Man I hope it does, that song rules

yeah I hope so too

I voted for it fwiw

Simon H., Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:38 (six years ago) link

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:39 (six years ago) link

Into the KLC & Octo Octa, both new to me.

RV also prob the least 'normal' of the four groups in terms of sound.

Completely disagree with this, btw, what's your reasoning? I think my issue w/ RV and Twice may be that they come across a bit like sub-par J-pop (and I listen to a lot of J-pop so am more snarky about this stuff) whereas Blackpink are more like a top tier Western girl group.

emil.y, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 17:39 (six years ago) link

My #1! Amazing song.
