lovely song

Simon H., Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:22 (six years ago) link

Say Something Loving and Replica were the highlights from that album to me but this was fine too, maybe one of them is still to place?

weirdly when I saw them recently they did this as a stripped down ballad, nowhere near as good

ufo, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:23 (six years ago) link

In my head last January I kept imagining a Buckingham-Nicks cover.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:23 (six years ago) link

Glad to see L'Rain. I actually nominated this on one of the last days for nominations so didn't really expect it to place. Only discovered this very recently but have listened to it a bunch the last couple of weeks.

silverfish, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:23 (six years ago) link

reminds me of use somebody by kings of leon :/

nxd, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:24 (six years ago) link

see how all the artists have been different? hasn't that been exciting? (starting my rules change campaign early )

Simon H., Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:24 (six years ago) link

lol but true xp

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:25 (six years ago) link

Love the album, voted for it. If I'd voted for a song it would probably have been Dangerous. On Hold placed last year, right?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:27 (six years ago) link

I believe so.

Simon H., Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:27 (six years ago) link

Not sure about combining points for originals and remixes that can be voted for separately. What's to stop someone heaving 98 points onto a single placement? Anyway, it's decent-ish disco so w/e

You can't vote for more than one version of a song, just like you can't vote for the same song twice.

? (seandalai), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:28 (six years ago) link

I may like or dislike an artist, I may like every other measure of a particular song, but the second I hear a fucking "oh whoa oh" part I check out.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:28 (six years ago) link

(Not throughout pop history...just in recent years. Y'all know that "oh whoa oh" I'm talkin' 'bout.)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:29 (six years ago) link

After their totally forgettable second album and Jamie's dreary solo one, I really didn't think I needed another XX album in my life, but I went back to I See You a lot last year. Might be my favourite album of theirs now.

kitchen person, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:31 (six years ago) link

much has been writ of the millennial whoop

#TeamHailing (imago), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:31 (six years ago) link

I suspect I'd like the XX a lot more if it wasn't for the dude singing literally everything in exactly the same way regardless of what it is. I get about a verse into any of their songs, whichever era it's from, and it's just such a chore.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:33 (six years ago) link

coexist was much better than i remembered when i revisited it recently, though it has few duds and i see you is definitely better

i wish the songs with romy from in colour had just made their way onto i see you instead

ufo, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:34 (six years ago) link

the oh whoa ohh in I Dare You doesn't count as a millenial whoop imo

Simon H., Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:35 (six years ago) link

Why? It sounds exactly like every other one.

I voted highly for the XX track, sucker for anything with a Glitterbeat. I voted for another glam influenced track, but if that places expect the board to go into meltdown.

YES

rob, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:45 (six years ago) link

really enjoying how much more meaningless "millennial whoop" is now and it was meaningless to begin with

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:46 (six years ago) link

yes I was gonna say 'one of the Massive Attack collaborators'!!

#TeamHailing (imago), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:46 (six years ago) link

a split second "oh hooo" is a millennial whoop now

As a label, it's meaningless. As a device, it torments me.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:48 (six years ago) link

I really dig this Mama track btw. The video is great (I love hair shearing videos.)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:49 (six years ago) link

this was my no. 6 and is the first song on my ballot to place since "nightwork"

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:50 (six years ago) link

I know people say this every year, but a few of the placing tracks having been *barely* mentioned on the borad makes me think we could stand to have a few more longshot threads on individual songs

rob, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:51 (six years ago) link

<1000 views on Youtube, I meant to say. got overexcited

#TeamHailing (imago), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:52 (six years ago) link

i also voted for the ashley beedle mix even though the original is also staggering

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:52 (six years ago) link

I didn't vote so I suppose I shouldn't complain but aside from Kelela, Laurel Halo, Kedr Livanskiy and Charlotte Gainsbourg, thus far this list makes it seem like 2017 was an awful year for music.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:53 (six years ago) link

Just not longshot threads about "Kill White Fragility" workshops. Otherwise they devolve into weird discussions on snare sounds and 311.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:53 (six years ago) link

never heard of unmask me before but it's got a nice groove

ufo, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 15:56 (six years ago) link

I know my own tastes and how they vibe with the ilm pop at large, so it's almost always a fruitless endeavor for me. Also, it seems like I burn out on such songs and never return to the thread.

51 ST. VINCENT "New York" [172 points, 8 votes]

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:00 (six years ago) link

This worked.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:00 (six years ago) link

Start the thread and stop worrying about whether or not anyone will respond. Plenty of old ILM threads had one or two responses and then snowballed.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:00 (six years ago) link

only part of this i like is the second verse with the synths & strings

ufo, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:04 (six years ago) link

This works for me today for whatever reason. Has never been a highlight of the album for me, though.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:06 (six years ago) link

i'm guessing "los ageless" will also place

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:07 (six years ago) link

New York was a huge grower for me. It seemed too slight for a lead single. Now I'd probably put it just behind Slow Disco as my favourite on the album. I love her in sad mode (Prince Johnny and I Prefer Your Love were my favourites on the self titled).

kitchen person, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:10 (six years ago) link

Relieved it's not higher tbh, such a gloopy record.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:12 (six years ago) link

hey JF, I was the #1 voter for Isbell, thrilled that it placed.

In a year with a deep bench but few absolute stunners, "If We Were Vampires" truly stood out for me, just a devastating ballad with lyrics that walk right up to the edge of corniness, but sound so good over that guitar line that it transcends the concept of "corniness" altogether. Like JF said, the central conceit is, "If we were immortals, relationships wouldn't mean anything," but Isbell takes it a step further and says, "so what?" Maybe it's death that makes life meaningful, but when you're with your soulmate, 40 years together, or 50 years or 100 years, is far too short. Beautiful, beautiful song.

I didn't get the appeal of this latest St Vincent album at all

Simon H., Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:16 (six years ago) link

hey JF, I was the #1 voter for Isbell, thrilled that it placed.

You, EZ and I accounted for 136 of its points, so go us!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 16:18 (six years ago) link

Oh wait, bad math. 146 of its points.
