Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Monday, 22 January 2018 13:38 (six years ago) link

was this the funny at-one-point #78 mentioned?

i guess this was one of the better chart hits this year

ufo, Monday, 22 January 2018 13:41 (six years ago) link

excited! although I never ever need to hear this song again

Badgers (dog latin), Monday, 22 January 2018 13:42 (six years ago) link

Good start :)

Frederik B, Monday, 22 January 2018 13:43 (six years ago) link

this is the first time i've heard of this song
looking good for the 77 :)

nxd, Monday, 22 January 2018 13:43 (six years ago) link

WAY TOO LOW!

(and no, I didn't vote for it)

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 22 January 2018 13:43 (six years ago) link

I don't dislike it, never choose to play it, glad Bieber remix didn't make it.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 22 January 2018 13:44 (six years ago) link

was this the funny at-one-point #78 mentioned?

Nope.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 January 2018 13:45 (six years ago) link

when i heard about that song first i thought it was much worse than it actually is...

76 AVALON EMERSON "One More Fluorescent Rush" [149 points, 7 votes]

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 January 2018 13:47 (six years ago) link

been rather disappointed with the 2017 reggaeton craze. I remember when it became really popular over here back in 2005, the hits felt a lot more bitey and driving whereas everything I heard more recently sounds watered down and very commercial-in-a-bad-way

Badgers (dog latin), Monday, 22 January 2018 13:47 (six years ago) link

No youtube link as per usual? (Yes, I need a direct link to find this obscure track 'Despacito')

Song is/was fine, obviously will never actively put it on in the future

abcfsk, Monday, 22 January 2018 13:47 (six years ago) link

I voted for both of these.

Someone in the RA comments mentioned they thought OMFR sounded like The Crazy Frog; which bothers me from time to time, but it’s great. Good video too.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Monday, 22 January 2018 13:48 (six years ago) link

I like the avalon emerson but i forget if i voted for it or not

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 22 January 2018 13:49 (six years ago) link

oh good
i've enjoyed everything by or remixed by avalon emerson so far and haven't got to this one yet

nxd, Monday, 22 January 2018 13:49 (six years ago) link

Misspelling in the image card is going to drive me nuts. Dammit.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 January 2018 13:50 (six years ago) link

"Despacito" is ok and I voted for it but I thought "El Perdon" deployed this same chord progression to more satisfying ends

the man from P.O.R.L.O.C.K. (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 22 January 2018 13:51 (six years ago) link

love avalon emerson in general but 'one more fluorescent rush' is a bit meh imo. b-side is great though!

faust apes (NickB), Monday, 22 January 2018 13:53 (six years ago) link

oh Simon h and I would like to remind everybody that they can still vote in metal/rock poll

The 2017 ILX Metal n' Heavy Rock Poll VOTING + CAMPAIGNING thread! Ballots due Saturday, Feb. 3rd!

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 22 January 2018 13:53 (six years ago) link

OMFR is not exactly subtle in its charms but it works imo

? (seandalai), Monday, 22 January 2018 13:54 (six years ago) link

Despacito has nearly five billion views!

#TeamHailing (imago), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:01 (six years ago) link

I voted for a different Emerson-related track but this is great too.

75 MINOR SCIENCE "Volumes" [150 points, 5 votes]

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 January 2018 14:02 (six years ago) link

ah glad this placed!

Badgers (dog latin), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:03 (six years ago) link

Despacito has nearly five billion views!

yes, that was mostly my son :(

faust apes (NickB), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:03 (six years ago) link

I never listened to this until I had the noms playlist going on Saturday. It gets more ott as it progresses, and not in a good way.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 January 2018 14:05 (six years ago) link

not nuts about minor science either really but two whities releases in a row - hoping that lanark artefax will show up too?

faust apes (NickB), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:07 (six years ago) link

found out about 'Volumes' via the noms list and I knew I had to take something off my initial list to find space for it. Well decent. Love the teutonic-sounding vocal clips 'loudest'; 'softest'

Badgers (dog latin), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:07 (six years ago) link

Actually it's nice to see 2 x straight bobbins instrumentals in a row. last years' was distinctly lacking in house and techno IIRC

Badgers (dog latin), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:11 (six years ago) link

Overjoyed that One More Fluorescent Rush placed, but that Despacito placing is like woah.

(xpost - Avalon Emerson placed last year as well iirc)

Matt DC, Monday, 22 January 2018 14:12 (six years ago) link

74 GOLDLINK ft. BRENT FAIYAZ & SHY GLIZZY "Crew" [151 points, 5 votes]

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 January 2018 14:19 (six years ago) link

lol I might have voted for "Despacito" had I noticed it on the list, which stands nicely for how I experienced the song this year: good song but once it was over I never remembered it. my dad loves it, I shoulda voted for it for him

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:19 (six years ago) link

Would love to see a youtube link under each entry like earlier years, if possible. If it's all set in stone though, no worries.

abcfsk, Monday, 22 January 2018 14:20 (six years ago) link

re: youtubes...sorry I didn't put those together in advance (forgot, tbh), but I'll add them going forward

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:24 (six years ago) link

Not heard this one before. Short and sweet, but I can see it becoming a grower.

Badgers (dog latin), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:25 (six years ago) link

damn, this poll is amazing so far

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:27 (six years ago) link

excellent image on Crew! love this song. I kind of thought this had caught on more widely than only 5 votes though.

rob, Monday, 22 January 2018 14:28 (six years ago) link

I don't remember 'Volumes' from the playlist but listening again now and it's lovely, the vocal clips actually took a bit of getting used to though!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 January 2018 14:37 (six years ago) link

I love this track from my favorite album of 2017.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:38 (six years ago) link

wow i thought this would be way higher. i voted for the album and couldn't quite make room for it though

ufo, Monday, 22 January 2018 14:38 (six years ago) link

don't think i voted for LMK so maybe i shouldn't be too surprised to see it so low but good god, TOO LOW

faust apes (NickB), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:40 (six years ago) link

great tune
think it just missed out my 25

nxd, Monday, 22 January 2018 14:40 (six years ago) link

wow this IS low. nice tune

#TeamHailing (imago), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:43 (six years ago) link

The albums I really loved made me skip voting for individual tracks of it tbh. Great song.

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:43 (six years ago) link

Yeah this is great too.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 22 January 2018 14:45 (six years ago) link

fully on board with a one-track-per-artist policy but album-or-track feels insane to me. anyway we've done this to death

#TeamHailing (imago), Monday, 22 January 2018 14:45 (six years ago) link

"Skywalker" was pretty controversial in the Miguel thread. I like it but would have picked "Banana Clip" if I'd voted for any tracks

rob, Saturday, 27 January 2018 15:00 (six years ago) link

So, I have been obsessing over that Pour Aisha track and will appreciate any suggestions for similar tracks (have bookmarked bobbins 2018 in hope that it is where similar tracks will be posted going forward)

Callisto - Never Again
Planetary Assault Systems - Return
Primary Perception- Hal9000
Pure Science - Bakwenas
Seafoam - Thrill Ride

Off the top of my hat you wont get these in the car boot sale, they are a bit serious so let me know if you want a couple of tunes with a cocktail stick and an gauche umbrella in too and I'll see what I can sort out, just don't tell the rozzers

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 27 January 2018 16:55 (six years ago) link

thanks Moka and saer those are all excellent

I prefer the ones with not too much going on, is it called deep house?

I have the Will Long - Trax album, that's also right up my alley (and I think I discovered it in an ILM eoy poll)

niels, Saturday, 27 January 2018 17:53 (six years ago) link

those dang rozzers

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Saturday, 27 January 2018 18:15 (six years ago) link

^one similar track I can think of from last year's poll is DJ Sotofett - "Current 82 (12 Mix)"

Dan S, Saturday, 27 January 2018 18:17 (six years ago) link

I think my biggest discovery from this poll is how incredible Paramore's version of Passionfruit is. Not sure why anyone would have any use for the original after hearing that.

I agree although strangely 3 of the top 4 are non-album tracks (which has to be some kind of record).

ILM's Top 77 Albums of 2017

gr8080, Monday, 29 January 2018 05:18 (six years ago) link

That Atelje track is really really terrible compared to his earlier stuff. Reminds me of Foster The People or some other indietronic-ish thing c2009. The Meditations album was much better than this.

On the plus side my partner and I are now K-pop converts thanks to this thread.

Badgers (dog latin), Monday, 29 January 2018 12:08 (six years ago) link

just caught up with this

I like CXCX just fine, but this is the weirdest #1 in this poll since "Wut."

weirdest as in unexpected or weirdest-sounding? bcz Wut was a culmination, a peak, a joyous collective ILM event; this is just a result of a lot of people liking something moderately (which makes sense after a wonderfully disparate 77!)

I don't know any of the boys in the video except for Dave 1 & Pee-Thug, Diplo, will.i.am and The Fat Jewish

Haribo Hancock (sic), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 10:49 (six years ago) link

Unexpected, on a personal level, because I had no idea what "Wut" was until people began saying it was going to win, and I was like "WHAT IS WUT?" Same thing with "Boys." I did not follow CXCX at all in 2017, and had never heard "Boys" until listening to it after seandalai gave me the results.

I'm late, but Thank you to everyone who ran the polls and everyone who voted. I started to make a ballot, but realized that I knew 1% of the tracks nominated. This poll was full of surprises. I've been putting off sitting down and going through this thread until finally, while coming down off a microdose acid trip last night, I went through every song on the list.

First off, I loved this one from the nominations YT playlist. It would have blown my mind if it had placed. The story about it is interesting too - https://youtu.be/sWblpsLZ-O8

My favorites in no order:
Twice - Likey
Bullion - Blue Pedro
Chromatics - Shadow
Playboi Carti - Magnolia
Mondo Grosso
J Hus - Did You See
Loona/Odd Eye Circle - Girl Front
Loona/Yves - All My Life
S.A.M. - Pour Aisha
Susanne Sundfor - Undercover
Kehlani - Undercover
Avalon Emerson - One More Fluorescent Rush
Serge Beynaud - Akrakabo
Black Madonna - He Is The Voice I Hear
Sun El-Musician feat Samthing Soweto - Akanamali
Carly Rae Jepsen - Cut To The Feeling
Jason Isbell - If We Were Vampires
Patrice Baumel - Glutes
Kamasi Washington - Truth

Great poll. Really blew my mind a few times. Someone said that it's been one of the best polls ever. I agree. Can't wait to dig through the albums now!

That's awesome ulysses! I'm glad you introduced me to that song. I love how moogy that filter on the bass sounds, like the tone is about to rip apart at the seams.

You know I noticed a common theme running through many of these tracks: an abundance of 7th chords, minor and major. 2017 seems to have really taken those tones to heart. (Not that 7th chords are uncommon to begin with, but they always strike my ear, and it seems like I heard them lots of tracks from this top 77)
