renewed
based on larry's comments in interviews, this is where he feels most at home, so perhaps this will just keep going...

I enjoyed last night's CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, and happy to see that MR. MIKE is still on Larry David's bookshelf. But it was upside down. Inadvertent, or is there a message here? pic.twitter.com/9oJQsaGHeJ— Dennis Perrin (@DennisThePerrin) January 20, 2020

Fun episode all in all, but felt kind of forced it bringing it up to date. Kind of familiar standup gripes, expecting the next episode to have Larry get fed up with they/them pronouns.
― ... (Eazy), Monday, 20 January 2020 15:21 (four years ago) link
The “mocha joe” conceit is an old standby routine of Larry vs restaurants and felt kind of thin. But I liked the wobbly table. I didn’t think the harassment stuff was funny
― calstars, Monday, 20 January 2020 15:35 (four years ago) link
Larry in the MAGA cap was funny, most of the rest of it hasn't been. The MeToo stuff feels lazy and tired at the very least.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 22:14 (four years ago) link
yeah it's not good. I don't if I'm bad now but I almost died at the fetus punchline at the end of ep1, but it has been downhill since then and into garbage Ricky Gervais type territory.
― calzino, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 22:19 (four years ago) link
this season's fine, Susie and Leon are my favorites, Garlin looking like Weinstein is probably my favorite recurring bit
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 22:52 (four years ago) link
I like that bit too, but Larry's understanding of MeToo is nowhere deep enough for most of the jokes to land, or often to even make sense
― MOAR PETE (sic), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 23:04 (four years ago) link
idk if anything more complex than "Larry sees a boundary and crosses it, sometimes inadvertently but usually because of a mixture of hubris and assholism" is required re: the #MeToo plot points
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 23:08 (four years ago) link
Liked the first ep a lot. Larry using a MAGA hat to avoid dealing with people is prime Curb. The Jeff/Weinstein mix up also pretty good and seems like it could lead somewhere pretty funny. Leon’s great as always:“You know what I noticed? Nobody where’s those hats on backwards. If you’re gonna get your ass kicked, you wanna see it coming.”

"I can’t do it anymore. He was having a good first date and then ruined it by acting weird about her recent weight loss."
Were you actually expecting it to not go badly at some point??
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Saturday, 29 February 2020 21:20 (four years ago) link
Yeah the first three seasons or so have a basically well-meaning but petty Larry who fucks up again and again. The worse he is the less funny it is.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 1 March 2020 14:05 (four years ago) link
I have not done a side-by-side comparison of Larry’s acceptable levels of being an asshole, but... really?I’m behind on the new season, but did think the sex consent stuff in one of earlier ones was kinda gross.
― circa1916, Sunday, 1 March 2020 14:37 (four years ago) link
Yeah seriously, watch The Bracelet or The Doll or The Corpse-Sniffing Dog again - tonally it's completely different. Larry is still a dick but he is usually trying to do something helpful and the humour comes from the fuck-ups along the way. He doesn't seem to delight in being an arsehole in the same way he does later seasons.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 1 March 2020 14:42 (four years ago) link
I’d like to give it a full re-watch but in my mind prime Curb was after like the first season or two. I don’t think it’s at the levels it once was, but like Seinfeld it was one that really hit its stride after a little bit in.
― circa1916, Sunday, 1 March 2020 15:02 (four years ago) link
It’s distracting having Nick Kroll and Fred Armisen playing characters who aren’t themselves, even though both do a good job.

I consider the first 5 seasons the best, with the finale of season 5 being a perfect episode that could've been a fitting series finale. don't think of this season as being vastly different from the last few before it?

finally getting around to Season 9, can I just say the part where Ted Danson is about to get his ass kicked for honking at someone and goes "it's me, Ted Danson!" and then mentions Becker before Cheers was very funny to me for some reason
― frogbs, Monday, 23 November 2020 17:33 (three years ago) link
Years ago I was in Omaha at this giant famous electronics warehouse, where they were showing off the then brand new high-definition televisions. A salesman came over and caught me admiring the picture, and started trying to, well, sell me on it. I told him the picture looked great, but if you didn't watch sports, there really wasn't anything else in HD to watch, and I swear when he tried to counter with all the HD options he mentioned Becker no less than three times.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 23 November 2020 21:30 (three years ago) link
enjoyed season 9, but am struggling with 10 - Larry seems more of an asshole than I usually like, have only watched 3 eps so maybe I'll warm to his new levelled-up dick self.

NY Post publishing fanfic out here
https://pagesix.com/2021/08/18/larry-david-screamed-at-alan-dershowitz-at-grocery-store-over-trump-ties/
A Page Six spy spotted the Harvard Law professor — who was once, like Larry David, a fully paid-up member of the Democratic cool kids — bumping into the comic on the porch of the island’s picturesque convenience store and community hub Chilmark General Store, and found their exchange so bizarre that they “wrote it down to remember it.”Dershowitz: “We can still talk, Larry.”David: “No. No. We really can’t. I saw you. I saw you with your arm around [former Trump Secretary of State Mike] Pompeo! It’s disgusting!” Dersh: “He’s my former student [at Harvard Law]. I greet all of my former students that way. I can’t greet my former students?”David: “It’s disgusting. Your whole enclave — it’s disgusting. You’re disgusting!”Added the stunned source, “Larry walks away. Alan takes off his T-shirt to reveal another T-shirt [underneath it] that says, ‘It’s The Constitution Stupid!’.”We’re told Dersh “drove off in an old, dirty Volvo.”

I was there and saw this happen and I’ve basically told everyone in my life this story since it happened on Wednesday. just absolutely surreal. Dershowitz was loudly opining about how far presumption of innocence should extend before it happened. like a caricature.— SM (@SmMcCllgh) August 18, 2021
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 19 August 2021 16:13 (two years ago) link
it was the most surreal thing I’ve ever seen. my wife and I spent the rest of our honeymoon muttering “you disgust me Alan!” at each other randomly like 3-4 times a day.— SM (@SmMcCllgh) August 18, 2021

wasn't feeling the first two episodes of the new season. had a couple good bits ('she plopped') but also lots of weak jokes and overall felt kinda awkward and stilted
(also, just me or larry and jeff are suddenly insanely tanned??)
...but i was relieved that episode 3 was hilarious throughout. felt like a classic
looking forward to tonight's episode
