i haven't maaaade a gif in 26 yeaaarrrsss
but for real i've barely made anything recently. everything has been going into a sound installation which has to be done about a month from now whether it's ready or not

Niiiiiiice.

i killed off weinventyou.net in late January, which was really dumb. i had kind of a freakout and just hit delete. i didn't archive anything. about 2.5 days later i felt intense regret, but the good news is that it really motivated me to rethink my portfolio and how i'm presenting what i'm doing. and also, i had old .psd files of most of my GIFs on an external hard drive, albeit chaotically organized. anyway, i finally am ready to share my new website/home base:
www.zachscott.org
the 1000 or so gifs on weinventyou have been narrowed down to about 25, and i've dedicated space to the installation-based stuff i've really been focused on lately. please check it out if you get a moment!
---also, for those of you around Chicago, i'm showing a sound installation at a pop-up exhibition on May 2 - please drop by to say hello! i'll probably be the guy in the corner, crying

and Electricity series, and the birds, and ...
thank you! and thanks for taking a look! it's very enjoyable to decouple my homepage from Tumblr/social media. it kind of sucks on one level because i had a decent online following on weinventyou (humblebrag, sorry), whereas the new website will be lucky to see 50 visitors a month. but it's also very nice to feel like i "own" it and can customize it as much as i want to. and very nice to not feel the subconscious pressure of making something that people "like" or "reblog". i know it's lame to admit that it was a consideration, but it's difficult not to let that influence what you're making. it feels very liberating to be away from that!

yeah that was kind of a trippy day! here's an outtake from that one
https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/zachscott.org/Assets/TheLivingRoom/2017-03-10++typing.gif
originally it was going to be a video with the action moving from the wall to the real living room to the objects and me, back and forth, but i never got going on it.
― Karl Malone, Monday, 16 April 2018 03:33 (six years ago) link
xpost thanks fetchboy! it would probably be pretty easy to do a centaurpart2.gif. i feel like i see that centaur in new photos every few weeks or so, it's very photogenic.

If you had a following from Wordpress could you revive it but post links to your site? or is that not allowed?
― startled macropod (MatthewK), Monday, 16 April 2018 05:16 (six years ago) link
Hmmm, what do you mean by “revive”? Can you follow blogs on Wordpress? I guess it has a social layer, too, but I haven’t thought about it yet.
― Karl Malone, Monday, 16 April 2018 05:30 (six years ago) link
Sorry - misunderstood, thought weinventyou was hosted on Wordpress, my mistake.
― startled macropod (MatthewK), Monday, 16 April 2018 06:25 (six years ago) link
oh, no problem! yeah, weinventyou was hosted on tumblr. that was fun for a while but became a nightmare. i followed everyone back and before long i could no longer use it with any practicality because the feed was a chaotic mess generating 100+ new posts to sift through every minute.
― Karl Malone, Monday, 16 April 2018 06:28 (six years ago) link
This is great stuff ZS! <3 Love the new website. It's very "artiste-y" ;) It indeed feels 'in control' to me: more a personal curation of your work than a bloggy, tumbler-y pile on.
Would've so been at yr exhibition if I could.
― lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 16 April 2018 06:37 (six years ago) link
aw, thanks LBI! i'm going to try to do a decent job of documenting this on<e so i'll post a video in a few weeks. if the whole thing comes together in time, that is. it's coming down to the wire and i have left a ridiculous number of things undecided, and materials as of yet unpurchased. but glad to knock out the 'put up a new website' item because i needed to do it and it was distracting me.

thanks! i replaced my old stop with "eeeeee eeeeeeeee", seemed fitting. there were 32 names in Key and Peele's sketch; turns out there are way more dc metro stops than that. i thought about making up my own fake names to fill in the rest, but for once i managed to stop myself from doing a bad thing.

wait wait wait did you forget the East West Bowl 2013? I see no Goolius Boozler, Fudge or Blyrone Blashington.

was wondering if someone would catch that, heh
i admit that i didn't realize there was more than one year of east/west bowl, so i just grabbed the names from here: https://alvinalexander.com/funny/key-peele-east-west-college-bowl-names-list
i should have went with this instead, which has the names from all three years: https://gist.github.com/JamesChevalier/7900a468a5038f7d0dc8

that's really cool james! what did you use to make it?
beware: when you post GIFs on twitter, it converts them to a video format and then introduces a laggy pause before each repetition of the frames, thus destroying the smooth quality that GIFs are supposed to have. twitter pretends to be a supporter of GIFs, but it's a cruel façade!
i usually upload images to imgur, which has an absolutely awful community (they're corporately bonded with Reddit, now), but at least they let you just upload GIFs without changing them to a different file format. here's what your GIF looks like there (i assumed that each frame (6 frames, each .1 seconds, I'm guessing?):

Thanks for that! I wondered what had happened to slow it down. I altered the original image using Deepart, with a picture of static rotated four different ways as the style images to use.

there is perhaps a better thread for asking this question, but I'm looking for a simple free/cheap application to superimpose text on images (to create album covers), preferably something I can learn to work with by watching a 30 min tutorial - any recommendations? (so far using Word and MS Paint, works OK but thinking I can do better...)
― niels, Friday, 27 July 2018 07:27 (five years ago) link
GIMP is the standard free photoshop recommendation - it's a photoshop clone, and it looks like it has plenty of tutorials as well!
