-I wonder if there will someday be a 3D Souls-like game that is actually great (and not made by From). Probably not.
-More 2D Souls-likes a la Salt & Sanctuary. I guess this only differs from Metroidvania games in that you can have different builds and approaches to combat.
-More good 2D puzzle platformers a la Limbo, with actual well-constructed puzzles.

xp They're making a Shenmue III fyi! I hope they stay close to the spirit of the originals and include pulse-racing forklift action and KISS OFF TWIT-style voice acting

Ohhhhh I know: Fez. Need more games where you feel like reality is disintegrating and reorienting itself around you (preferably to a less distressing degree than the manner in which reality is currently disintegrating and reorienting itself around us irl).
Also, I've just returned to Hohokum and I appreciate its complete unwillingness to give you direction or telegraph in any way whether there's even an objective, just forcing you to poke and prod and figure out wtf is even going on. So more like that, as well.

AND ALSO: because I am perpetually in the middle of playing 5,258 games at any given time (thanks, ADD!), it would be cool if there were more games structured like MGS V where you can do little side missions to kind of brush up on the control scheme before returning to the main campaign after an eight month sabbatical and not having any idea how to make the dude on the screen do what you want him to do.

Shadow of the Colossus. Least we're getting that next-gen remake soon.
― circa1916, Friday, 19 January 2018 20:38 (six years ago) link
I assume you mean you want to see more games with an unwieldy camera that frustrates your ability to fully appreciate what's otherwise an amazing game. I have to assume that's the thing you want more of, surely.

― circa1916, Friday, 19 January 2018 20:52 (six years ago) link
Yeah, there's a serious dearth of truly huge monsters in games. Still kinda want to get that newish Godzilla games even though it isn't supposed to be all that great.
― the smartest persin in the room (Old Lunch), Friday, 19 January 2018 20:55 (six years ago) link
Full remake already? Seems too soon but in reality it's much longer than the time it taken for the Resident Evil remake, crazy.
Check my update on the Castlevania thread for something new a bit like Castlevania and Bloodborne.

good (accessible) sims mostly
speaking of which apparently they're remaking theme hospital??
i have v strong memories of simlife too.
theme school district, theme media conglomerate, theme mercenary group (is this jagged alliance 2??)
the real issue is that lots of genres i thought i really wanted (like more isometric baldur's gate / fallout games) i realized were a) partially nostalgia and b) partially some really good games in a genre that is not necessarily compelling itself. but that's true of all games right? it's all about the execution.

(Side note, but this thread reminded me that a) I hadn't played Shadow of the Colossus in like eight years, b) that I have a copy of the PS3 remaster, and c) that it's one of the like five PS3 titles that's enabled for Vita remote play. And I got all excited but then discovered that Vita remote play is total bullshit that basically doesn't work at all unless you consider a twenty second lag between clicking a button and seeing your dude finally jump 'working'. Congrats again, Sony.)

If somebody could come up with a take on the Suikoden series that applied the sort of self-deprecating sense of humor for its own world-building that you see in Crashlands, Lowlander et al, I would be stoked. I’d just as well see more games like Lowlander though. Chintzy DQ1 / Ultima clones that are funny and I can play on my phone. All the JRPG shit is overpriced bollocks.

the preponderance of shitty clone games is actually what happens when the means of game production are too widely available. anyone in the world can make a pixel strategy game, only the most balling $$$$$ company can make e.g. gta 6
― sleepingbag, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 23:13 (six years ago) link

― Woon... Doopee Time (FlopsyDuck), Wednesday, 21 March 2018 23:15 (six years ago) link
there were always shitty clone games tbh - look at all the awful no-name platformers for the NES or whatever. and it's not like you need a huge budget to make something original or interesting. surely what's driving the ubiquity of certain types of games is how they can be monetized, click to spend a dollar to get a magic axe or whatever the bullshit deal is. still funny how relentlessly similar they are in genre. like... you know you could clone kingdom rush but not have it be in medieval fantasy times right? do it with vampires or zombies or bacon or some bullshit like that, you'll differentiate yourself from the pack and really get rich off the same suckers.

I wish there were more 2D base building games that also had boss fights. if that wasn't clear from the two game-specific threads I talk to myself in more than the others.
also I kinda think the gambit system in FF12 was the best rpg party combat mechanic ever and that should be in all of them. which reminds me to go get xenoblade chronicles 2 like ciderpress said.
― El Tomboto, Thursday, 22 March 2018 01:02 (six years ago) link
xenoblade is nothing like any FF game even 12 tbh
― ciderpress, Thursday, 22 March 2018 01:10 (six years ago) link
I thought you said the combat was a little like the gambit system? I'm easily confused. Anyhow I was not aware that mine is apparently a popular opinion: https://csgmagazine.com/2017/05/27/final-fantasy-xii-the-zodiac-ages-gambit-system-is-the-greatest/
― El Tomboto, Thursday, 22 March 2018 01:16 (six years ago) link
i definitely wouldn't have been the one who made that comparison
xenoblade combat is like some weird mix of a MMO or MOBA and a combo brawler, where your character auto-attacks and you have abilities on cooldowns but eventually you're also trying to combo and animation cancel all your abilities into each other. it's pretty slow and rhythmic for a real-time system but still faster paced than a turn based system. it's hard to describe accurately since it's so unique relative to other JRPGs.
― ciderpress, Thursday, 22 March 2018 03:27 (six years ago) link
it also makes heavy use of QTEs, but in a good way? it's very weird
