Allstars 2 is the last time I felt I could really connect with the genre. It's a bitch move to diss something because of it's fans, but fuck it, I find the whole thing way too student-y these days...

Dubstep Allstars really need to get Oneman on the case. The way he mixes current dubstep with old 2-step is sublime.

My favourite dubstep qua dubstep mix is the Scuba mix from last year linked to upthread (I think it's on the hotflush website).
For a handy encapsulation of the new techno-dub/2-step revival trends check out this great mix here:

nice piece by kiran sande over at Fact on dutch duo martyn and 2562 here. i've seen they've already been mentioned a couple of times up thread.
i have to say, martyn is really doing it for me these days. i have a great track of his on a mixtape (broken?? - poss unreleased) that has this lovely dreamy quality (despite the jiy-normus bassline).

I've probably avoided posting here since I can really only learn from this thread and not contribute, but what's the deal with Darkstar? I ended up downloading a couple songs from a Hyperdub release on emusic and it seems quite a bit different from a lot of other things I've heard.

RE: Appleblim Rinse FM Podcast
Is it possible to get it in more than 128kbps? A cursory skim shows t's probably best not wasted on a low bitrate listen.
― mehlt, Monday, 12 May 2008 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link
the 128kbs factor has kind of put me off listening to the rinse podcasts (probably to my detriment). i don't think they come at a higher bitrate unfortunately.
what i've heard of the D.R.E.A.M. mix sounds excellent so far (at 320kbs!!). thanks for the linkage.

LOL@ the idea that pirate radio should come in high fidelity quality
― J@cob, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 05:37 (fifteen years ago) link
perhaps this is something The Radio Authority could look into...
― sam500, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 05:45 (fifteen years ago) link
For one, this is a podcast for an established website, not pirate radio, no? Second, listening to just 10 minutes of this mix makes me feel like I'm in love. It's like the initial ambivalence I've felt toward what I've generally found to be too blocky and grimey for my tastes (e.g. Benga)* has been answered, and how. Like, mixes like this might be opening doors to new ways of approaching music for the next few years. If this was released as a CD I'd definitely buy it.
― mehlt, Sunday, 18 May 2008 02:45 (fifteen years ago) link
Rinse is a pirate radio station that happens to have a website.
Appleblim has mixed the latest Dubstep Allstars which you'll be able to buy on CD soon enough.

and i left out stuff that mo'wax compiled, like dj assault, liquid liquid, dj magic mike, divine styler, etc
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link
the only stuff on mo'wax that i don't like is the solesides-related stuff (blackalicious, dj shadow, etc) and the nigo, tommy guerrero, etc vanity projects that crept in toward the end.
highly rate: andrea parker, urban tribe, as one, major force west, UNKLE, palmskin productions, la funk mob, attica blues all the various awesome major force and carl craig and 4 hero remixes they put on those early EPs
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:42 (fifteen years ago) link
Blech. I have to assume you are kidding or you haven't actually heard much Dilla cuz thinking Major Force West > Amplified, Stakes Is High, Labincalifornia, Slum Village, hell even Donuts et all is pure troller-y.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:43 (fifteen years ago) link
Anyway you will probably love Flying Lotus.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:44 (fifteen years ago) link
I thought it was all vanity projects haha.
Looking at that list it is now clear than I don't smoke near enough pot haha.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:50 (fifteen years ago) link
oh wait, so you're going to count "stakes is high" and "labcabincalifornia" as dilla albums? can i count LCD soundsystem as UNKLE albums? because tim goldsworthy is on those, too ...
to be honest, i'm not super-crazy about "stakes is high". or "labcabincalifornia". i own all of the slum village albums, but i've gradually come to realize that each slum village album has about three good tracks on it. more or less they just keep remaking "tainted". anyway dilla's not on any of them so much, particulary the only one i *really* dig anymore which is "dirty district".
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 18:00 (fifteen years ago) link
yes, it's true, mo'wax is music for weedidated white kids in hoodies, quite unlike, uh, "labcabincalifornia"
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 18:01 (fifteen years ago) link
anyway talking about mo'wax is probably not a bad precedent on a dubstep thread
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link
I'm not counting them as Dilla albums, but there are Dilla productions on them! The song "Stakes Is High" is Dilla! He did what half of Labcabincalifornia? If you are talking about complete albums, then I am not so sold on most of Dilla's (either one's he produced or under whatever alias he was using last), but no way a collection of his best productions doesn't shit all over whatever group of warmed over sample-jazz Mo Wax you want to put it up against.

― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 18:12 (fifteen years ago) link
former, ahem.
Why is no one turning up to defend mid-90s Ninja Tune? DJ Food fans? Anyone?
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 18:15 (fifteen years ago) link
stuff didn't age very well. i still have a soft spot for Journeyman though.
― rockapads, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 18:23 (fifteen years ago) link
stuff on mo'wax is much better than the runaways uk because it's spacier, colder, darker, druggier. same reason most people say dubstep is better than other breaks-driven stuff, like, uh, meat katie. and why people say meat katie is better than the freestylers.
i like dj food! jazz brakes 4 and 5, recipe for disaster, refried food, the one krautrock / philip glass type music EP that came in the clear case ... all dope.
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link
Runways UK is RPM. They sound almost exactly the same. And I've heard most of the records you list there and those are no the adjectives I would use to described most of them. But whatever I'm glad someone is getting something out of them.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 18:37 (fifteen years ago) link
runaways UK is rpm?
that's cool, i mean roni size 93 is roni size 2008, doesn't mean there aren't good and bad roni size albums
