i beat the final final world. the last gauntlet is quite tough! you have to make it through a bunch of sections all in one life.far out you are formidable. that is a shitbag of a level. i got that multimoon through the cheat instead, because fuck returning to goombas every time you die.
― rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 12 January 2018 02:08 (six years ago) link
i feel like if i have the temerity to ever try the moon challenges again i might just have to pick up a Peach amiibo, cuz i am not hardcore

yeah i read about that on Kotaku. is that based on the same concept as the Talkatoo glitch? im going to have to do it, it sounds kind of fun. you turn into a frog and traverse the abyss?

it’s so easy to pull off it’s sort of ridiculous
love the Battle in Bubblaine boss rematch in the Mushroom Kingdom. they really switch up an already awesome boss fight. now there is no ground and no water beneath you, only clouds, and it is constantly raining, so you have infinite water jetpack. it's pretty cool.

if we don't get a dlc kingdom or 2 for this soon I will take it as proof they are making a second game
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 15:13 (five years ago) link
Sequel needs playable Peach, she has Tiara so giving her the capture ability is already justified.
― devops mom (silby), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 16:19 (five years ago) link
i wish someone would add SMB2/peach-style movement to a game character. the low-level hover. it's one of the most satisfying ways to navigate around a videogame, imo
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 16:57 (five years ago) link
but SMO's triple jump is so sick. apparently it's so versatile you can beat the game without any captures
― Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 17:05 (five years ago) link
the Yoshi games are hover platformers though I know it's not quite the same hover
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 22:06 (five years ago) link
Yoshi seems to have inherited that moveset.
playing Princess on level 4-1 of Super Mario Bros. 2 is forever burned into my brain. sliding across the ice and under buzzards w that hover skill.

i played some of this drunk late last night and it was so wonderful. New Donk City is a huge joy to get around. you can roll your way across town, drive the moped, bounce on taxis/people/window overhangs, turn yourself into electricity and scale buildings that way, triple-jump leap from building to building like Spiderman, etc.
all completely seamless and in a level that uses somewhat holographic or fractal level design. the area as a whole is designed for the "main" game story mission, side areas are plentiful, often including off-shoots of their own. these mini levels are holistically integrated into the environment. it is cool replaying the game after finding all the moons and side areas and realizing how much stuff is accessible right at the start, how all the pipes have a secret 2nd moon in them that usually has a fun acrobatic challenge to it.
it does feel like the natural evolution of the open worlds of say Super Mario Bros. 3, where you had the one-room Toad levels that were just a treasure chest w an item in it or whatever.
btw holy shit this game looks incredible. it really feels like an HD cartoon world. i know technically GTA still trounces it but i don't care, the art design is, as always w Nintendo, wonderful. it really looks like a 3D CGI cartoon at parts. the camera is quite helpful when needed and otherwise generally stays out of the way and lets the avatar loom large in his adventures on the screen. needless to say im beyond excited to see what they do next.

i've been replaying too. as much as this game felt derivative the first time through, it gets more enjoyable every time just being in the levels. i'll probably play this through more times than sm64.

so cool the robots were a direct reference to Silent Running. also i loved this answer to the realistic humans controversy and the question "Is Mario a human?"
In an interview with Vice, the game's director Kenta Motorkura confirmed that Mario is human saying "Mario is human (...) in the world, there are many different types of people, you know."

oh wait, that would require a capture card. i just assumed it was built into the switch (like on PS4)
guess i'll have to play this game the ooooool' fashioned way

i will probably need a fair amount of luck! to this day i have confidence in my old school 2D super mario bros. 1 - SMW skills, but i am generally pretty terrible at 3D action games. it's lame but i have never been able to use an analog stick as precisely as i could with a d-pad

i'm a few hours into this now and it's predictably fun though certainly not a reinvention of mario like what they did with zelda
Same here. Just got to the Underwater Kingdom and whilst it's been fun, I've been slightly underwhelmed after all the stellar reviews it got.
It also seems much easier (so far) than I remember previous Mario games being. None of the boss battles to date have been particularly taxing and most have been done on the first attempt.

hey i just started this too. i was going to wait to start it until i was ready to take a break from zelda, but i was home with my older daughter yesterday and she wanted me to check it out so i did. not very far in at all but i love it
― na (NA), Friday, 4 January 2019 15:27 (five years ago) link
same here as with groovypanda, as someone who made a last-minute snap decision to get mario over zelda i'm kinda mad at myself? ah well i'll get to zelda someday anyway. beat odyssey in not that many hours. i guess i could go back and get all of the moons from the fun levels but even that feels like a chore.
― teen heartthrob Pacey Winger (Will M.), Friday, 4 January 2019 16:21 (five years ago) link
The game gets a bit harder after you “beat the game.”You also get access to harder refights of the bosses. Mario 64 pretty much nailed how 3D Mario should jump and move on the first try so it makes sense to me that this game, 5 or 6 3D Marios later, feels a lot like that one. The transformations are where the new wrinkles are and some of them are a whole lot of fun.

ah ok, i will have to dip back in.
one thing that bugged me was since i was playing handheld, the game kept prodding me to play nunchuk mode (climb faster! throw further! all with a flick of your wrist!) and i didn't want to and i was mad that i didn't get ot do all of those things
is it still called nunchuk mode if they're not attached? tonfa mode?
― teen heartthrob Pacey Winger (Will M.), Friday, 4 January 2019 16:27 (five years ago) link
I have nothing but bored memories of this game
I feel like an idiot for playing it out instead of quitting and finishing SMG2 or Sunshine instead
― flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 4 January 2019 16:42 (five years ago) link
with a year's distance i feel comfortable calling this my favorite mario game, though it's not way better than the other 3d ones, just enough better. it could definitely get galaxy 2'ed.
― ciderpress, Friday, 4 January 2019 20:40 (five years ago) link
what was the last Mario game that could be described as "difficult"? some of Sunshine's stuff was challenging but a lot of that was due to a wonky control scheme. I think Nintendo's philosophy is to make the main stuff easy and forgiving with some side challenges that are way harder
― frogbs, Friday, 4 January 2019 20:43 (five years ago) link
Any tips on how to get the cap jumps and other tricks figured out? It seems like the game would be so much more fun if I could do that stuff.
― DJI, Friday, 4 January 2019 20:48 (five years ago) link
There was some Luigi stuff in Galaxy 1 that I remember was excruciatingly hard, and Tick Tock Clock from 64 too. Parts of Odyssey got there, Dark Side Of The Moon especially.

Sunshine was the only Mario I can think of that was really crazy difficult, and mostly in those subspace levels. But I also like easy Mario inherently, never liked the idea of Mario going masocore.
― Nhex, Saturday, 5 January 2019 02:23 (five years ago) link
idk I honestly rate this game slightly lower than SMB2 with its endless towers of chains and climbing, I found it excruciatingly tedious
Zelda Switch was my favourite in the series though, I'm a big fan of the system but Mario needs Big And Meaningful Goals not thousands of moons that you trip over
― flamboyant goon tie included, Saturday, 5 January 2019 07:10 (five years ago) link
on the first play through this game didn’t do a lot for me, but recently i played through it for the fourth or fifth time (top of 804 moons, ~150 hrs in total). definitely more fun on repeated goes.the one thing that doesn’t sit well with me (and honestly it’s a stretch, i don’t really care) is how some levels (new donk, cascades) can be so finely constructed and textured, and others (the lost world) look like duplo. it feels like 2–3 separate studios built their own levels and it was all chucked together at the end.

Whenever Mario hits a wall during his rolling move in Super Mario Odyssey, he will assume a saddened expression for three frames at the moment of impact. OK, just started, and it seems like this game is going to be some good, dumb fun! I love how every PS4 game I've played so far seems designed by 14-year olds, and most Nintendo games seem designed by delirious 7-year olds. " ... and then he has a magic hat! And it talks to him! And has magic powers, and ... and you can turn into a dinosaur! And it has a mustache, too! And ... there's an evil turtle monster, and he wants to marry the princess, and ... "
