I'm already a little behind in listening but Fabric's in-house label Houndstooth has a compilation that'd fit this thread that's being released over a number of days on bandcamp:
https://www.houndstoothlabel.com/view/in-deaths-dream-kingdom

Interesting release strategy, gives individual tracks some space for evaluation while you wait for some of the tantalizing things further down the tracklist

mh, Thursday, 11 January 2018 15:04 (six years ago) link

I like that idea.

I do have a track on this one (*full disclosure*), but it's a free comp with a really nice range of material imo. Ambient to club bootlegs with some slippery beats and rubato percussive pieces inbetween.

This is an INCREDIBLE compilation from late last year. Not sure how I came across it, but it's got some insane cuts from Jlin, Zora Jones, Rashad and a cast of many other big names in dancehall, footwork and elsewhere: https://boomkat.com/products/visceral-minds-2

enjoying this album by тпсб
review from PS here: https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/tpsb-sekundenschlaf/

on the shtick front, it's both a project from someone who probably isn't who they claim, and it's on blackest ever black, so I went in with a set of expectations but was pleasantly surprised. the mixing on the percussion is doing some really cool things with depth

mh, Friday, 19 January 2018 17:06 (six years ago) link

xp yeah i'm ordinarily not too impressed w/ this style of music but i gave that visceral minds 2 a try based on the RA review and it was really good

I loved that Zora Jones label mix from last year that had a bunch of Sinjin Hawke album tracks, but for some reason it didn't click for me as an album after it was released.

That's pretty dope ('Are You Still Hurt').

This isn't exactly my thing, but I went to school with this guy and was obsessed with his work at the time when he was making more beat-oriented music. Now he makes his own instruments and controllers and is involved in more academic spheres. But maybe some of you like long Buchla jams:

Dark synthpop duo MIRACLE return with their sophomore full-length and first album in over five years, The Strife Of Love In A Dream. Consisting of Steve Moore, one half of the progressive synth-rock duo Zombi and composer of contemporary horror soundtracks including The Guest and Mayhem plus vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Daniel O’Sullivan, known for his work with a myriad of art rock luminaries including Ulver, Grumbling Fur, Æthenor, Sunn O))), Guapo, Mothlite and This Is Not This Heat plus special guest drums from A.E. Paterra (Zombi, Majeure, Maserati), MIRACLE play moody, stylish, synth-driven pop that evokes vintage Depeche Mode at their most dramatic heights. Self-recorded over a four year span in London, New York and Pittsburgh and mastered by Matt Colton (Aphex Twin, Caribou, Flume) at Alchemy Mastering, London, The Strife Of Love In A Dream is an incredible display of synthpop composition, infectious arrangements and gothic lyricism that is nothing short of a modern masterpiece.

https://billygomberg.bandcamp.com/album/slight-at-that-contact

Billy Gomberg makes music that might appeal to people who like Microstoria, En, Fennesz, Nuno Canavarro, et al. It's unhinged and thick with atmosphere, drifting and droning--aural latticeworks, with unusual textures, marked depth, and odd sound events. It's also calm (at times) and meditative. His more recent work sounds darker (tonally), with add'l acoustic elements coloring the fray.

macropuente (map), Saturday, 13 October 2018 04:04 (five years ago) link

not talking about specifically just a general statement about straight white guys who would describe what they like as 'misfit club music'

macropuente (map), Saturday, 13 October 2018 04:06 (five years ago) link

not sure about the "misfit" part, but thinking the "experimental electronic" part of the title might determine the content on the thread

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Saturday, 13 October 2018 04:11 (five years ago) link

except that's also a shitty descriptor but really the 'misfit' part is exactly what frames the thread. music is social bruh and this party blows.

Yeah. It is a cringey title but uh... maybe getting heated up about a thing that isn’t really in this thread?

macropuente (map), Saturday, 13 October 2018 04:28 (five years ago) link

Does noisy electronic stuff really code as strictly Straight White Male in 2018?

Idk, haven’t kept up with this thread, but some of the best stuff in this ballpark has been made by trans, women, poc these days.

circa1916, Saturday, 13 October 2018 04:42 (five years ago) link

*waves goodbye to all the straight white dudes who can't dance* so sorry i'm going back to ignoring your horribly titled thread

sorry if this naive or ignorant (tell me to shut up) ...but, ah... instead of dropping in to complain about the topic title, and flossing yr ~anything~ but "straight white dudes" brattitude, make an aptly-titled thread title that denotes what you do want to talk about. otherwise it's a fucking crapshoot, and people with no intention of asserting their own sexual/identity politics online are gonna be offended (oh no!?)

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Saturday, 13 October 2018 06:01 (five years ago) link

Oddly rankled by that maps snipe still.

Came of noise age in the Wolf Eyes/Hair Police/Prurient era and I still like that stuff, but the angsty hyper masc white dude in black archetype is so much less of a thing now. It’s infrequent, but I still occasionally hit up warehouse/house/hip-yooth-venue electronic~dance~noise events around here in Baltimore and there’s literally almost always a super forward lgbtq, women, poc inclusive vibe, performers and audience. And if you aren’t with it your ass is out.

circa1916, Saturday, 13 October 2018 06:20 (five years ago) link

hey map, thank you for barging into this thread with the assumption that i am a "straight" "dude", you're really contributing to the dialogue here

also, thanks tons for making my inability to dance into a moral failing, it's totally awesome having my developmental disorders characterized in that fashion

I suspect drinks may have been taken...

I'm straight and white! Can dance a bit. Which sounds like a pound shop version of Fred Astaire's screen test.

Does this mean I can stay?

Have the Rams stopped screaming yet, Lloris? (Chinaski), Saturday, 13 October 2018 09:05 (five years ago) link

On the contrary, you may only stay if you're a straight white dude who can't dance at all.

In all seriousness, though, those were some fucking awful, FP-worthy posts, map. The whole 'it's alright to bully people who can't dance and/or people who like to listen to music on their own' shtick needs to die a definitive death unless you're targeting white supremacists or something. Especially since the scene under discussion is hardly lacking in diversity, as other have pointed out.

pomenitul, Saturday, 13 October 2018 10:58 (five years ago) link

Agreed with rushomancy and pomenitul above, also want to say that 'misfit' is a perfectly fine word to describe music that isn't easily categorised and doesn't easily lend itself to a communal clubbing environment, this is all I ever imagined it to mean.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 13 October 2018 11:10 (five years ago) link

as a field report, i played a show monday night in a loft space with a bunch of experimental/noise/drone people and 1) it was super fun 2) everyone was friendly 3) music was good 4) they let me play which is a sign of inclusivity because i am a nobody 5) there was no dancing but it was very relaxing and enjoyable. not sure it would have gone down like that 15 or even 10 years ago but that is conjecture. there was no dancing but there was also no posing or assholery. just good times!
