^^ voting highly for sacred paws

if I may do my bit for Sacred Paws, I absolutely loathe it, which usually helps to push something up the 77

you loathe it imago? strong words. i'd be interested to know why

Speaking of excellent Scottish bands, I'm very surprised to see just a couple of mentions of Glaswegian kosmik funk marvels Golden Teacher on ILM. Their album was apparently recorded live at the city's famous Green Door Studio and spans a huge range of styles from disco to dub to spaced-out Lindstrom-esque fuckwizardry and it's REALLY REALLY good

This is the lead track, and maybe the most obviously accessible song on there. It goes interstellar after that youtube.com/watch?v=GFpnkgd6iok

Kinda astonished that Dave "Question Time" has never been mentioned on ILM. Devastatingly powerful and on-point, my track of 2017 by a country mile. https://youtu.be/4ff6CjYBhoI

Just skimmed through the nominations, was Lingua Ignota All Bitches Die not nominated?

Siegbran, Tuesday, 9 January 2018 20:34 (six years ago) link

Doesn't look like it. You can vote for it in the metal poll though!

o. nate, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 01:13 (six years ago) link

really encourage everyone to check out Wednesday Campanella - Superman. imaginative & idiosyncratic dance-pop with great energetic vocal performances from KOM_I & a similar all-over-the-place vibe to Art Angels except much more rooted in dance music. lead single Aladdin almost made last year's tracks 77, it's sort of like Thriller-meets-freestyle

ufo, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 04:09 (six years ago) link

this is great :)

It was not nominated in the metal poll either it seems (or rejected as it's indeed not metal?). Anyway, absoluetely great record. This combination of Diamanda Galas-inspired apoplectic singing/howling + early/medieval music + doomy electronics is right up my alley.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 10:56 (six years ago) link

Oh, wow, that's really something. Her cover of Bad Boys!

etc, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 11:53 (six years ago) link

@Siegbran - simple error on my part, I've added it to the metal noms list

Simon H., Wednesday, 10 January 2018 13:07 (six years ago) link

I agree it’s unclassifiable and not metal, but it contains enough metallic characteristics for me to vote for it there in good faith and thematically it’s plenty dark to fit in there.

I seem to always be several months behind Suiyoubi no Campanella's releases (or is it always Weds Camp in English now? This is a recent development and I get confused easily), so it's not had time to settle in as a full favourite, but they really are such a great band, deserve way more recognition around here.

emil.y, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 15:45 (six years ago) link

Also, yeah, Aladdin kills.

emil.y, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 15:45 (six years ago) link

yeah Wednesday Campanella has been the official english name for a little while now. it's been really impressive how they keep getting better & better, while being so prolific. i'd imagine ilx would be all over them if it weren't for the language barrier, it's not like the jpop thread gets much traffic

ufo, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 16:04 (six years ago) link

Tbh I don't think anything's topped Jeanne d'Arc for me, but they've definitely upped their game in terms of writing out-and-out bangers.

emil.y, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 16:18 (six years ago) link

agreed that "jeanne d'arc" is still their best, always happy to hear new music from them, though.

thanks davey for nominating Caterina Barbieri - Patterns of Consciousness, lovely stuff

Feel duty-bound to observe that Cleric - Retrocausal is now on Spotify and would make a nice if slightly terrifying addition to the second albums playlist

#TeamHailing (imago), Friday, 12 January 2018 08:16 (six years ago) link

it wasn't nominated! but the single "grey lodge" was and has been added... that was the only single that I couldn't find anywhere, so thanks!

sorry. long day

#TeamHailing (imago), Friday, 12 January 2018 19:59 (six years ago) link

it was a another extremely year for women in country music. For starters --

Sunny Sweeney
Angaleena Presley
Nicole Atkins
Nikki Lane
Whitney Rose
Natalie Hemby
Lee Ann Womack

not sure if I'll find a place for all of them but their albums are all outstanding, some even classic.

omar little, Friday, 12 January 2018 20:27 (six years ago) link

right on

brimstead, Friday, 12 January 2018 22:25 (six years ago) link

all right, i'm prob not going to do this v well bc i'm tired and hate writing about music atm but here are some things i really want to rep for (some of these might seem obvious but i can't tell what anyone's aware of anymore):

1. any and all dua lipa singles

2. goldlink's "crew," the first time i've cared about a goldlink song (it might simultaneously be the first time for a ton of ppl tbh), the hook is so gorgeous

3. k-pop was improbably rich this year, it's hard to figure out what to include in my ballot, but, in addition to red velvet's "red flavor" (not their best single ever but extremely worthy, it's all technicolor pops), i would like to draw ppl's attention to the non-stop glitterings of iu's "palette" and the asymmetrical synth longing of yves' "new" (k-pop mvps of the year are loona, the greater mothership group from which yves' "new" descends; check out odd eye circle's "girl front" as well)

4. mama, "unmask me," particularly the ashley beedle vocal mix, a song i forgot about until tim nominated it, perfect, glowing, vulnerable house

5. little big town, "lost in california," see tim's comments here: "It Is Happening Again": Tim writes about songs from 2017

6. sasha feat. poliça, "out of time," which at the moment i feel like i'm the only person who really *loves* this song, it's sort of an "everything in exactly the right place" house jam for me: the vocal, the groove, the synth washes, everything interlocking precisely so as to convey you toward an unspecified destination, driving toward a sun-melted horizon that you never seem to actually approach etc. etc.

7. h/t to d-40 for pointing my way toward distruction boyz' gqom is the future and particularly the track "omunye", the synths feel like they're divebombing

8. radio slave, "another club," house needs almost nothing to work

9. another h/t to d-40 for 03 greedo, whose catalogue is overwhelming and hard to isolate a single song from, but regardless the one that resonated most with me was "never bend", i think of all the songs of his i've heard this is the most cinematic union between production + greedo's constant invention and revision of his own hooks

10. heavy-k feat. bucie and nokwazi, "inde," bc it is the best music in the whole world

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Saturday, 13 January 2018 16:01 (six years ago) link

the extremely syncopated synth blinking in "girl front" reminds me of mary jane girls "candy man," i only just picked up on that

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Saturday, 13 January 2018 16:04 (six years ago) link

oh i forgot about jacquees "at the club", star of the 2017 r&b thread

That Octo Octa album is really good.

How do I feel a complaint? (_Rudipherous_), Saturday, 13 January 2018 22:24 (six years ago) link

I'm listening to this a lot right now - Leif - July V - Sort of like Steve Reich makes downtempo acid techno.

Lost in California is incredible, can't believe I didn't get to it before voting

porg and bess (voodoo chili), Saturday, 13 January 2018 22:29 (six years ago) link

I've got to say, some of the late entries, which I'm just getting around to sifting through, are pretty high quality. I liked Kelly Moran's Bloodroot, which I guess is prepared harp or something like that? (Not curious enough to search right now.)

xp, I agree, that Octo Octa album is great!

I also really love the Sasha/Poliça track that Brad recommended above.

Some things that nobody mentioned:

(3) Trio of synth-pop
Perfume - Houseki no Ame (it's Perfume, it's great obv)
Johan Agebjörn and Mikael Ögren ft. Sally Shapiro and Tommy '86 - Aurora Over Odega (Remix) (Relive the glory days of ILX)
Charlotte Adigéry - 1,618 (the older sister, bit more hip and experimental)

(2) Two new age albums ft. cosmic enlightenment
The Swan And The Lake - Clouds (new)
Pauline Anna Strom - Trans-Millenia Music (old)

(1) One album with "One" in the title
https://penelopetrappes.bandcamp.com/album/penelope-one (very Poliça, bit of Kelly Lee Owens, bit of Low is my super lazy comparison)

(0) ???
Mariam the Believer - Crust (art-pop odyssey to soundtrack progressive romcoms and picnics)

keep meaning to post my picks but would like to give due deference to LOONA Girl Front, that is a jam

gonna repeat myself but with a little elaboration

L'Rain

the most astonishing debut in a while. psychedelic art-soul from the heavens. only 26 minutes long. whatever your taste you need to hear this. whoever nominated it, you are an angel

#TeamHailing (imago), Monday, 15 January 2018 20:42 (six years ago) link

I know ILX doesn't have a Bollywood massive, the way we have k-pop and afro-pop groups, but I'd still want to mention my favorite this year: Guru Randhawa - Suit Suit. Probably won't make the list - and that's probably not that unfair - but still one of the only times of year where people will listen to Bollywood tracks.

been digging around the noms list and I just want to shout about this track 'Volumes' by Minor Science which is this wonderful slow-pulse techno track with these cool little vocal snippets that grows and grows into an absolute BANGER of a tune.
thanks to whoever nominated that

billy woods' album Known Unknowns is fantastic and well worth a listen.

Also the Buddy track Find Me was great: https://youtu.be/NWTNbDkalAQ
