thanks, laurel, but those aren't the ones.

Speaking of boots: hey people who aren't Ally, can you actually zip normal boots over yr calves? Lauren, I'm looking at you, doll. I've had boots stretched before but you can only do so much and the options in plus-sized shaft territory are often dire. I can't TELL YOU how many pairs of beautiful boots I've put back because they didn't couldn't be zipped further than my ankles.

Maybe not, but there are two or three other boot styles? Perhaps none of them are right but worth a try? http://www.easyspirit.com/s?namespace=catalog&origin=viewall_category.jsp&event=pg.shoe&cid=45001&viewall=yes

WHY ARE THOSE EASY SPIRITS SO EXPENSIVE? i WANT :( :(

i have a fucking hell of a time finding shoes i like. seriously, i have three pairs of shoes right now and they are all cheap crap that are wearing out. i have this crazy theory that every pair of shoes makes me look fat. which seems a little weird. BUT I SWEAR.. ITS TRUE.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Laurel, that's my biggest shoe tragedy. knee-length boots never zip over my calves, which are apparently monstrous. I've had a Lumiani pair on Zappo's recommended to me, but I can't find it right now. once I bought a wide-calf pair from J.Crew online, though, and they still didn't zip over my calves. the shame!

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I KNOW! Why so expensive, cute shoes??

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:57 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't have problems getting boots on, unless they're exceptionally narrow. if stretching doesn't work, i'm not sure what else to suggest.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:57 (seventeen years ago) link

laurel hit the lace ups or those material boots, you know with the stretchy black material. i like the zip and lace numbers myself. nice snug fit.

I MEAN, hell, TARA SUBKOFF ISNT A REALLY BIG CELEB name, is she!? we saw her cameltoe in "FREEWAY" - big DEAL.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:59 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, I found the Lumiani boot:

http://www.zappos.com/images/718/7186363/827-180125-d.jpg

they're $210...

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:59 (seventeen years ago) link

it's weird because the Subkoff-designed clothes I've seen are heinous, but those shoes are beautiful.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I have problems with having to put back boots because they are too big on top :(

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:00 (seventeen years ago) link

would that we could all get our boots custom-made. it seems like they exist to make everyone feel like their legs are just wrong.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:01 (seventeen years ago) link

major xpost, but re: roman sandals:
They have to be done right and be in the right colour b/c they can so easily look really cheap. But I'm kind of into them. I've been watching Rome though, so I also want to dress in gauzy drapery and wear really big jewelery these days.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I really really don't like stretchy boots. And I do love ridiculous paratrooper boots for actual snow and shit-kicking but lace-ups are not for dress-up in my world. I know, I know...none of the options are good.

(Ally darling, I know -- or I could have guessed because I know other people with the slender little gams. I'm sorry for your boot suffering as well as my own.)

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:04 (seventeen years ago) link

There are some YSL semi-wedge heels and they are my overwhelming iirrational shoe need, for £400. No way.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:04 (seventeen years ago) link

custom-made everything = one of my DREAMS.

i mean, that plus world peace.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I've seen really nice Roman sandals, but the pair I posted seem to go overboard in a characteristic way, which is just ugly.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:06 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm just anti-sandal, i think.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:07 (seventeen years ago) link

:(

I've kind of gotten used to it, having to occasionally wear boots that look too big, like a little kid in their parents clothes. The other way is worse, I think. What I don't understand is why they don't make boots with shafts in various sizes. They can make the foot part itself various sizes so why don't they offer narrow, medium, and wide for the top? Does anyone do this? It seems weird to assume that because someone has a size 7 foot, they have smaller calves than someone with a size 11 foot.

I am very much not a roman sandal type.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:07 (seventeen years ago) link

heh. or the pair Chloe Sevigny is wearing here, which, I mean, what?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v719/gofugyourself/sevigny2.gif

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:09 (seventeen years ago) link

there are wide-shaft (dirty!) boots, but they are often in a different, uglier style than regular ones, for some reason. I believe there are special narrow ones, too; have you checked Zappos, Ally?

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:11 (seventeen years ago) link

What the hell is that girl ever wearing on her body.

I have actually not checked Zappos but I am loading it right now!

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:12 (seventeen years ago) link

oh noes, cuet!!!

http://www.zappos.com/images/722/7223426/827-272212-p.jpg

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, Ally, I know -- I wear like a 7 in the foot but I apparently I have the calves that ate Tokyo or something. I mean, what?? They don't SEEM that big! It's muscle, because I DO STUFF, okay! Jesus. The most annoying part is that, with certain exceptions, the more rarified and chi-chi the designer/house, the narrower or skinnier things will be. For instance, Charles David and Anne Klein make shoes on a WAY NARROWER last than, say, Aerosoles, as if not being long and narrow is "common" and eating is for peasants.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:13 (seventeen years ago) link

that Sevigny photo needs to be sent to GoFugYourself on the double.

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah actually when I think "enormous legs" you aren't exactly the first person I think of, wtf? now I have this image in my mind of magic boots that shrink and expand on cue, to fuck with the tryer-oner.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, the anthrolopogie site has tons of sandals so cute I want to eat them. Some are even sort of Roman in concept and I DON'T CARE I WANT THEM.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Wide calf boot site. I got a great pair of Blondo's last winter. She gives the calf circumference measurements for the different shoe sizes.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:16 (seventeen years ago) link

heh. milo, I bit it from GoFugYourself.

that's totally true about the big-name designers designing shoes on the narrow. it sucks.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:17 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, I've had to stop looking at Anthropologie shoes. so beautiful, so, like a million dollars a pair. I covet.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:18 (seventeen years ago) link

ohmygod i want these
http://s7ondemand1.scene7.com/is/image/Anthropologie/640035_frt?$main220x340$

(i am enjoying this group shoeshopping thread)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:21 (seventeen years ago) link

God, I just love this thread!

I treated myself to some Marc Jacobs ballet flats this evening on the way home from work BECAUSE I FELT LIKE IT, OK?

Oh, they're divine but I don't know how to post pictures (probably a good thing).

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I totally missed those red peep-toe wedges Ally posted upthread. that's the shoe I want. I mean, there are, like, fifty shoes I want, but those wedges are at the top of the list.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:25 (seventeen years ago) link

They are stunning. I'm too lazy to read this thread (just gasping at the pictures) - where are the red ones from?

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, those are totally great.

things i have learned today:
i really want blue wedge sandals.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:28 (seventeen years ago) link

whoa life size shoes

I think the red peep toes are BCBG, unless you mean the 9 West ones.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:29 (seventeen years ago) link

sigh. the Anthropologie shoes I currently long for:

http://s7ondemand1.scene7.com/is/image/Anthropologie/64227_frt?$main220x340$
the color!

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:30 (seventeen years ago) link

top pair

xpost

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I like the ankle strap ones, Ally, but you really can't go wrong with any of them. red shoes!

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

ok those were the ones I was leaning towards :)

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Well. It's impossible to tell without knowing what the dress looks like, stylistically, but I say buy the top pair, hands down. I hate the obviously plastic-y sole on the woven pair, I like the white top-stitching on pair #3 but overall they're too "Easter Sunday in East Grand Rapids"for me, and pair #4 seem awfully Euro, somehow. Maybe it's the really high vamp? I am partial to toe-cleavage and low-cut shoes. And I can't help feeling like that burnt red color is a few years old and you need something fresher for spring/summer. So rule out #4.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Definitely the red ankle-strap with the peep-toe and cream piping. They look comfortable too.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

the woven ones would be so great with a wooden wedge. it's sad really :(
and with red stitching, the low heeled ones would be so great too.
i agree with L about the last pair too.
oh, shoes...

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I really liked the woven ones but the wedge is wrong, you guys are right, that was my misgiving about it too. The third pair I probably would've never purchased cos I never wear heels that low. I kind of like the shape of the 4th pair but see what you mean about the color (plus it'd kind of be the wrong shade of red anyway).

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

can anyone help me identify the style names for these adidas?

I WANT!

bell labs (bell_labs), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:47 (seventeen years ago) link

This is the heel in question, there are many combinations but for longevity's sake something in black. DROOL.

http://show.myfashions.org/img/paris/2006/Yves_Saint_Laurent/shoes/001mf.jpg

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:01 (seventeen years ago) link

that heel looks like it should be shouting "exterminate! exterminate!"
i like it.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:06 (seventeen years ago) link

that's beautiful in the gold, suzy. are you sure you couldn't get a lot of use out of it in that color?
