Spencer were you at his LA "debut" at the Whiskey A Go Go in 2002?

Missed that one.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 23:49 (nineteen years ago) link

It was pre-"I Get Wet" but post-"Girls Own Juice" mini-tour. I took my friend from Japan when we were down there for ATPLA and we ended up leaving early. I wish I would have heard the record before seeing him, I was pretty shell-shocked as is... seeing him go from playing a tiny little noize club in SF (kimo's... RIP) to selling out the Whiskey in about 2 years.

this site catalogs all the bizarreness and theories. it's a very good site, and it's a fascinating read... oddly, this site is linked from AWK's main page. A bit odd, isn't it?

Anyone have any idea what sales were for his albums?

Also, what happened to that MTV show with him? (Or was it VH1? MTV2?)

xpost, That site is crazy.

hm. at first I thought that article was going to blow me away with new information, but the writer's claims are not backed up by anything, and it appears that his claims are simply "bolstered" by his disdain for AWK's style of music. I dunno, his statements are shocking, but he seems too biased to be reliable.

-vest, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 21:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Why don't any of those sites mention Wolf Eyes or Fisherspooner or any of that stuff?

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 21:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I can't open the first one on my Mac. That second guy neglects the fact that he put out records on the Bulb label as Andrew W.K. before getting signed to Island.

-vest, Thursday, 11 August 2005 04:35 (eighteen years ago) link

if you go to the index of that site you get a strange slideshow and eventually a new song. i haven't listened to it yet.

Talk about a bad Dianne Warren/AWK photoshopping.. you can see the Atari 2600 style low res shadow pixels

Where is that song, el sabor (if you don't mind)? I don't see it.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 11 August 2005 04:54 (eighteen years ago) link

This reminds me so much of that crazy guerilla marketing campaign for AI which involved a network of mysterious and creepy websites that needed to be decoded. Anyone remember that?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 11 August 2005 05:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Absolutely -- I was thinking the same thing. Esp. since the Steev Mike post was the first I'd heard of a third album. But then, I don't really follow the AWK news too closely...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 11 August 2005 05:07 (eighteen years ago) link

I just went and looked at andrewwk.com, and...um...wow.

He needs to get together with Marissa Marchant and make the most insane album ever.

prescient

Isn't there an ILM poster named "steev???"

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 11 August 2005 05:16 (eighteen years ago) link

BTW, here's a site that archives the AI thing I was talking about. It was really quite similar: a string of small websites at different URLS, encoded messages, a fan site that decoded it all for people who couldn't be bothered to care, etc.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 11 August 2005 05:36 (eighteen years ago) link

ok, the other site redirects to www.andrewwk.com, where there's a slideshow you can click through. at the end you get a page with a bunch of pics of mr. wk, including drivers license photos and what looks like a high school yearbook pic from the 1950s. it's at the bottom of the page. it sounds more like a beer commercial than usual.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 11 August 2005 06:50 (eighteen years ago) link

anyway, if anyone's interested, there's another new song "Kicks and Bricks" on http://www.andrewwk.com.

looks like he has three albums recorded that he plans to release in 2006. i hope they rock.

'the wolf' was released so long agoooooooooooo......

Ben H (Ben H), Thursday, 20 July 2006 04:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't there's any doubt that they will rock, as you say, because that is AWK. He doesn't do anything else. He's one-dimensional in a beautiful Ramones-ian kind of way. Bring on the new stuff.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 20 July 2006 07:59 (seventeen years ago) link

There's already another thread somewhere with NEW STUFF ON IT.

He has a song called Hand On The Place. Party on.
