alright, if we're going to get down to brass tacks - fuck you. is that enough of a response? or do i have to waste another paragraph re-stating my personal opinions in single syllables to appease you?

find me someone (or several people) saying something bad about WFMU (other than "they play jewish music every damn morning!") and then i'll say, "ahh, you were right, they're entirely underrated!" but until then i say yeah, great, free-form radio - but that doesn't mean every show is compelling (most of them aren't). but feel free to be a blustering shithead some more if it makes you feel good.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

WFMU does a lot more than play music, and there's a lot more than just obscure difficult-to-listen-to music as well, to be fair.

Not every show on the station is meant for everyone, and that's fine. It's not meant to be a Clearchannel sort of thing, where it's the same 24-7. I don't listen to/like a lot of their programming, but my intense love of Tom Scharpling's hilarious Best Show, Dorian Devins' interview show The Speakeasy, Downtown Soulville, Aircheck, and the Audio Kitchen makes WFMU the best radio station in the world enough for me. There's a number of good music programs, but I don't get excited about them the same way - Laura Cantrell's The Radio Thrift Shop, Scott Williams, Douglas Wolk, Mosurock, Donna Summer, Frank O'Toole, and Doug Schulkind all play plenty of good music.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thanks Matthew for the clear headed response, obviously not something you'll see from your Princeton Record Exchange backroom cock tasting compatriot. Obviously an unambitious (thankfully) hack who, since he has absolutely nothing to offer in the production of music, radio, writing, or academia will continue to polish his hairless nuts here in the shadow of anonymity. At least here people are forced to look at his posts whereas the real world only offers him disgusted looks and disregard.

The hell? This is like Naipaul and Theroux going after each other's throats.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

ahh, log jammer, you're a sad little anonymous shitheel, aren't you? love to know who you actually are behind your little pseudonym, but i guess you're a coward. eh? so have fun "backroom cock tasting" the FMU staff, babydoll.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ned, which is Naipaul and which is Theroux? Just for future reference...

Flip a coin.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 02:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can somebody please taste my cock? I need a second opinion.

mosurock (mosurock), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 03:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

hey didn't i try to download some Vashti Bunyan from you the other day?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 04:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah you did. it's not gonna work. some users just can't download from other users. i asled the soulseek people and they say it's an asynchronous program and that's just the way it is. don't feel bad -- some guy's been trying to get Divine Styler off of me for months.

mosurock (mosurock), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 05:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

no worries, i've been meaning to buy the album for ages anyway, should probably get off my ass and do so

i'm listening now to the live feed, because the archives won't work on this computer, and i would like to ask glenn jones to SHUT UP AND PLAY MUSIC

Jesus, this guy just on now (Dave Mandl) has just rambled on about absolutely nothing for 6 minutes and then has the cheek to say "so many records, so little time"

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 23:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I believe he said "so few records, so much time."

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Thursday, 28 October 2004 00:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Is Steinski still on there? I love his records. Please tell me about his show!

Don, Thursday, 28 October 2004 00:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Steinski hasn't done a show in sometime -- it was called A Rough Mix, and was a TON of work for him to come up with an hour of what he does. I get him to do the occassional special, he hosted a ReMixology show last year and gave us an hour mix. But he's still around and pretty active on our staff email list, probably will be at our Fair manning a table or two next week.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Thursday, 28 October 2004 00:55 (nineteen years ago) link

man there was this kenny g show from like two years ago where he just fucked up some beatles and some stones but mainly beatles and mainly white album, too good, tell him he rules.

Woah jumping into old thread I've never seen before, but chalk up one more WESU DJ.

Matt Stroman (Soultron), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Not DJs, but I like Joe Frank (I think that's his name -- the guy that does the weird narratives with background music), and the guy that does the frighteningly meticulous conspiracy stuff about Bush's Nazi ties.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Best FMU DJ, all time: Jefferson (only because it's Jeff Mangum)

Best FMU DJ, currently: OC DJ

cdwill, Thursday, 28 October 2004 02:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, on another thread, Douglas observed that Steinski "would rather just do 2 or 3 tracks a year than release something that was whack," so I can imagine how much he worked at doing an hour. I really love NO FEAR and the current STEINSKI'S BURNIN' OUT OF CONTROL:THE SUGAR HILL MIX. So his hour is in the WFMU archive now? (My soundcard is whack, most of the time.)

Don, Thursday, 28 October 2004 04:28 (nineteen years ago) link

i haven't listened to wfmu since i haven't had broadband--at least 1 1/2 years.

Not counting Scharpling (who I listen to primarily for comedy), my favorite WFMU DJ lately is Ken Freedman. I've found some great stuff on his show.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 28 October 2004 10:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Did anyone hear Petey's Listener Hour? A-mazing.

Mike Dixon, Thursday, 28 October 2004 19:22 (nineteen years ago) link

has no one on this thread mentioned gaylord? are y'all crazy? he is fmu's most pop-tastic dj.

i also love belinda and hova's warped kid's show "greasy kid stuff," which probably has a much smaller playlist than the average fmu show, but it's a damn good playlist, and it's funny, and they're funny, and they, too, are pop-tastic.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:45 (nineteen years ago) link

I was on seven second delay last week when they did the honor system call-in fantasy baseball game. The show was a total wreck but overall it's one of the best call in shows the world has known. I got a turkey and fixins from Andy Breckman during a Thanksgiving scavenger hunt a couple years back, too.

Chris T's Aerial View is great, Greasy Kid Stuff, Kenny G, Ken Freedman, Brian Turner, $mall Change, Frak O'Toole, and I think I remember a DJ named Crow from a few years back who I miss alot.

Shaun (shaun), Friday, 29 October 2004 19:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Frank, not "Frak" O'Toole

two months pass...
Wm Berger's The Hip Bone circa early 90s including his groudbreaking 4-trak showcase "lo-fi" (because I met a lot of good friends that way).

Glenn Jones because he doesn't care if I think so and plays whatever he wants.

What happened to Frank O'Toole? I finally have the bandwidth to listen on the web and I can't find his show?

Doug Wolk has/had a show? That must be/have been good.

and lastly, in memorium, TKF

Skooli Descartes, Hyena Sparerib, the Electric Eggplant, SPOOG, S!T!O!I!N!K!

John Beekman, Friday, 7 January 2005 00:32 (nineteen years ago) link

You can still listen to Douglas' show - the archives are right here.

Also, here are the archives for Frank O'Toole.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Friday, 7 January 2005 03:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Frank isn't on the current schedule, but he probably come back sooner or later.

My vote might be discounted but I gotta vote for my homie Mr. FineWine, especially since I was with him when he realized what his DJ name was gonna be.

your null frame's email address looks very familiar. i think it may be a fellow dj WPRB. you know, that other station in new jersey.

Tracer, when Fine Wine gets back from Spain, we should go see him at Botanica or one of his other gigs.

Favorite back to back shows: Charlie and Tony Coulter. I liked Fabio's show a lot too, sorry to see him go. Was the departure his idea or was he chased out?
