Shakey's attitude in general is pretty nauseating.

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 29 July 2006 04:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe I'll send him a copy of my "Folktronic" album, Bluegrass Bobcat sounds a lot to me like my Appalachia. (Although the reference to a "girl" in my lyric may well frighten him.)

He's an otaku. In Japan they've become fashionable and sexy to girls following a hit manga, novel, TV series and feature film called Densha Otoko: Train Man. He sounds like the kind of guy who should move to Japan -- for the games, the trains, and the girls. His cockpit-style living space is also very Japanese.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 29 July 2006 08:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I also think he has a promising future as a comedian, should he choose to stay in the West. He's got great material like "My Annoying Nose":

"The purpose of the nose is to smell, right? My nose doesn't seem to be able to pick up most anything besides smoke where I'm extremely sensitive to. My parents once bought chicken from KFC. They can smell the chicken from even ten feet away. I, who was holding it, couldn't smell it from even a foot away! If a dog's sense of smell was 10,000,000 units, as an example to compare, the average human would get about 2000 units (smell masters would get more around 4000 units). My nose seems to output more around 80 units, a tiny fraction that of normal. My nose, to conclude, has almost no use, but has a lot of strong negatives to simply having it."

He dislikes any music with vocals.

He's an otaku.

Err, he's autistic. There is a huge difference. He's not just some socially inept nerd who keeps to himself. He is biologically lacking the ability to empathise with other human beings.

I'm just picturing you in a surgeon's gown, rummaging through his brain with a scapel and saying "Nope, there's definitely no empathy here."

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 29 July 2006 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I sent him the one email. He replied and seems like a nice enough guy. I'll probably post on his forum that will be for helping him find bugs in his videogame, which I was going to play anyway.

Why does his site remind you of Innumeracy, curtis?

After reading "My Annoying Nose," which Momus posted, I e-mailed him about my similar problem & let him know it was called anosmia. That was really important to me when I found out. I would be reluctant to diagnose him with anything else, however.

xpost! I just came here to say that. He has a wonderful accent which doesn't sound at all like I expected. If he'd just enunciate a little more he could make good money reading kids' stories (uh, until one of the dreaded words came up).

Hey, you've got a great voice for gaming-tips narration -- reminds me of William Burroughs, but much younger sounding.

OTM, especially like where he says "bad graphics"

marmotwolof, Sunday, 5 August 2007 22:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Ha, I didn't see that. I nearly mentioned Burroughs myself but thought better of it in case I showed great ignorance of American accents, not being from over there.

a passing spacecadet, Sunday, 5 August 2007 22:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Nah, definite similarity, and I've listened to tons of Burroughs readings. I don't think there are any recordings of WSB from before he was already in his 40s, so if you subtract age and add a touch of nasal tone, there you go.

I would totally listen to video game podcasts from this dude.

cutty, Sunday, 5 August 2007 23:29 (sixteen years ago) link

This is the most bittersweet website.

His meat juiciness tip is surprising:

First off, this trick can ONLY be applied when you're shopping for meat. This particularly applied to a pot roast. When you go out to buy meat, look for the white stuff in the packages and feel it. When there's a lot of it and it's rather hard, the juicier it can be. There's one catch though you should be aware of [but it's rare]: it could have very little in the center, thus taking out the juice. This has worked 22 out of 23 times so far. The catch of this trick got to me, but looking at the chances of failure, it almost-always works.

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 6 August 2007 07:01 (sixteen years ago) link

By "the white stuff" does he mean the fat? Cause thats a well known one, fat-marbeled meat being more tender.
