Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

In the wake of the game’s release, people have also done things like releasing a mod that gives dark skin to key character Cpt. Bernard as a joke. The mod is titled “Inclusive Cpt. Bernard,” and it got over a thousand upvotes on Kingdom Come’s subreddit in reaction to Eurogamer’s review of the game, which criticized its politics.

Increasingly, I feel that those who impugn social justice (and, by extension, the basic bonds of the society whose benefits they enjoy) should be forcefully thrown from a very high cliff.

To their deaths, in case my intent wasn't clear.

i like the idea of all the worst and most incompetent people all getting together in one place. if this gets popular enough maybe online games will become somehow playable.

Hello. We've heard all the discussion today regarding the lack of diversity at Eurogamer and thank you for it. No excuses, we are not proud of it and will work harder to improve the range of voices on the site.

You can actually get quite far down the responses before someone asks for more political diversity.

This is interesting:

Seems like devs and moderators are taking a considered approach (or perhaps not doing nearly enough about the problems?) given the weaponising of petty grievances into GG-related conspiracies, though the guy who just purged the Steam message board did a good job

Typical story these days, but I feel like Ben Kuchera deserves some credit for wading into the filth, clickbaiting the toxic manbabies to this story and engaging with/insulting them in the comments section. I don't know if it's actually worthwhile, but he's got more courage than I do.

on the one hand maybe but on the other hand i don't want rian johnson to get his trilogy cancelled for shit he said on twitter, you know?

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:43 (five years ago) link

i dont see how it is courageous to defend Star Wars, Rick and Morty, and "videogames", all massively popular media properties that your employer covers daily. it's kind of getting old. how many stories do we need on the tiny minority of MRA people. do we really need to hear their input on every topic? what is gained from scapegoating them in lieu of actually looking at the content of these properties and why these types of people may be drawn to it in the first place?

these are giant global brands consumed by millions of people, no doubt there are always going to be some lunatics among them. it is annoying to constantly be hearing about the most extreme horrible fans, as if it nullifies anything else wrong with these movies or tv shows.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 14 June 2018 17:06 (five years ago) link

this is just giving them a platform. if someone is trolling a celebrity for lolz then having a website write them up is only going to make them want to do it more.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 14 June 2018 17:11 (five years ago) link

even if no one wrote them up in the media, they'd still be (and have been for years and years) harassing any woman with an opinion in fandom, tech, whatever. better to shine a light on these turds and have someone actually stand up for what's right, especially as more women and minorities are included as both fans and creators. I don't see the downside to keep saying "don't act like an asshole, dipshit."

Nhex, Thursday, 14 June 2018 19:05 (five years ago) link

yeah also imo it is good for newly arriving fans to hear often and repeatedly that this behavior is shitty and uncool. like i've said before, arriving on the internet at 11 or 13 or whatever, seeing all these usenet faqs explaining what a flame is and how it isn't cool.. useful training in understanding what the norms of a community are and so on. i like the idea of newly-minted gamernerds knowing from the get-go that you should avoid people grinding axes about the evils women and minorities and social justice, that this is gross behavior and to be shunned. idk.

sounds like the soul calibur 6 development team is really thinking hard about how they represent women

“I’ve played SoulCalibur games, and I used to play a lot of Cassandra. I was playing Sophitia just now,” I told Okubo after playing a few rounds of the upcoming game. “I noticed that, in this version, her breasts are more prominent. You can see up her skirt. Ivy, still, is wearing not that many clothes. When I play a game like SoulCalibur, I feel like it’s not for me. I feel like it’s for men who might be interested in these characters. I’ve always sort of felt that about SoulCalibur. Is this something you consider?”

Here’s what Okubo said: “Of course, I am a man, as well as many of the people on the development team. That’s something that we should probably consider if that’s the opinion of a female perspective like you in the future. We weren’t necessarily going out to try and intentionally make something sexy for the purpose of being sexy.”

...“It’s interesting you say you don’t set out to be sexy,” I continued, “because SoulCalibur has traditionally had really elaborate breast physics in the game. That doesn’t exist for gameplay, of course.”

“I think, as a result, the characters as a result end up being sexy,” replied Okubo. “That’s not something we can deny necessarily, but in the process of game design, we just really try to go after what we think would be cool actions, cool movement, strong, powerful movements. That is kind of a byproduct of this pursuit of trying to find what we think is pretty cool.”

yeah, it was such a worthless, transparently thoughtless reply.

i think the first time i can remember thinking about how women are depicted in videogames was back when the first tomb raider came out in 1996. this issue, specifically:

https://i.imgur.com/Q7jJyCZ.jpg

in the interview, lara croft's polygonal hotness came up, and the developer guy was like "we figured if you're going to spend 20 hours playing as someone, they might as well have a nice arse." i think that was also the second time i noticed someone use the word "arse" (after braveheart in 1995).

This is whats good about Destiny - the female characters have booming strong thighs and solid armour and no boobular action going on.

“Before Gamergate I was a pretty standard liberal or even a socialist,” Ralph told me. “I’d write hit pieces on right-wing figures. It was a hobby. But when Gamergate broke out and I got an audience that happened to be more reactionary, I thought, It’s my job to do propaganda for Gamergate. The ethics in video game journalism stuff, I didn’t care about that.”
