i had no idea that was a horseback riding term. I'm such a city boy.

Bowling for Bitcoins (Lee626), Friday, 5 January 2018 12:28 (six years ago) link

actually i didn't even notice that was a horse; i thought it was somebody spreadeagled on the floor

Bowling for Bitcoins (Lee626), Friday, 5 January 2018 12:30 (six years ago) link

It was Poco's logo so it might still have nothing to do with horseriding. But Richie Furay was born again so I can't see him participating in anything untoward.

Whiney Houston (Tom D.), Friday, 5 January 2018 12:40 (six years ago) link

Richie was out of the band by the time they adopted the horse logo though (although occasionally rejoining)

Bowling for Bitcoins (Lee626), Friday, 5 January 2018 12:46 (six years ago) link

the horse logo was designed by Phil Hartman incidentally - his brother was Poco's manager

xp re TCONB:

i'm guessing it's a reference to the moldy prank call:

is your fridge running?
yes.
well you better go catch it!

do you have prince albert in a can?

that kinda shit.

andrew m., Friday, 5 January 2018 16:47 (six years ago) link

I just noticed that the syrup on that Head East cover looks kind of like Texas (panhandle toward the viewer). I wonder if that was intentional.

nickn, Friday, 5 January 2018 17:11 (six years ago) link

Oh man, I used to own that Richard Torrance album! "Rio de Janeiro Blue" is a smooth slice of yacht rock.

From 1978, the amusing named Trumpetmachine with the painfully titled, "For Flying Out Proud".

Video reach stereo bog (Tom D.), Sunday, 28 January 2018 23:02 (six years ago) link

Huh, had not heard of Trumpetmachine before. Woody Shaw, Kenny Wheeler and Jon Faddis. Sounds like it might have been a less successful coattail rider of the Supersax concept?

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Monday, 29 January 2018 02:53 (six years ago) link

No doubt. I find Faddis tedious for various reasons I won't elaborate on right this second.

I have seen the son of Mike Zwerin, who was on Birth of The Cool, I think, play bass a few times. Seems like a pretty nice guy. He is unusual in a jazz context in that, not only does he play electric bass, but he plays it slung real low, a la Paul Simonon or Kris(t) Novoselic, say.

The Sound of the City Slang (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 29 January 2018 03:08 (six years ago) link

That's actually the early '80s but it belongs in 1978.

I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life

Never Learn To Mike Love (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 3 February 2018 21:34 (six years ago) link

Hmmmmm, I can't really see a Wet Willie or a Man or a Roger Miller going for that title tbh.

Video reach stereo bog (Tom D.), Saturday, 3 February 2018 21:42 (six years ago) link

“Creepin’ into your private life” maybe

I can almost picture the cover.

‘Al Green Explores Your Mind’ veers in that direction.

Arlen Roth - Hot Pickups (1980)

― Doctor Casino, Sunday, February 18, 2018 2:43 PM (two weeks ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Definitely one of the most boring sub-categories of this type of album cover is anything that directly references the fact that you are playing an instrument. It's like "there is absolutely nothing transcendent about this record, it's just a demonstration of me playing"

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 15:22 (six years ago) link

they get even sadder with distance. i'm assuming that at some point arlen roth had some kind of reputation, maybe praised amongst guitar folk, written about in magazines, so an album that's just "hey here he is playing guitar" might be like "shit yeaaaah I gotta get that." those days are now long gone, i fear.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 15:49 (six years ago) link

Oh man, this is really sad.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGXrDFyRlfE
Priceless footage of Danny Gatton tribute concert. Arlen Roth and his late daughter, Gillian, performing Suzie Q mixed with Day Tripper. Gillie had just turned 12. Arlen lost Gillian and her mother in a car accident in 1998, when Gillian was just 14.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 15:54 (six years ago) link

Downer, man :((((

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 16:00 (six years ago) link

yeah, sorry to sad up the thread, but I felt bad for making fun of Arlen Roth after I read that. Plus he seems to play really nicely.

A minor classic in the 'back-related puns' sub-genre of Horrible 70s Album Titles.

Cliff's had a few album titles that I would class as borderline Horrible 70s album titles like I've Got My Own Album To Do.
