two weeks pass...

Mike Trout says on a conference call that he's not sure yet if he's going to the Super Bowl because he likes watching at home and watching the commercials.

if i'm not mistaken this season he's already passed 20 players in career WAR (2 of them being Votto and Kinsler.)

Since the start of the 2016 season, Mike Trout has surpassed 67 Hall of Famers in career WAR. https://t.co/Z5udhbpXkJ

Willie Stargell played parts of 21 seasons in the Majors, hit 475 homers, made seven All-Star teams, won the NL MVP in 1978, made the Hall of Fame on the first ballot, and was just surpassed in WAR by Mike Trout.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 20:33 (five years ago) link

with that 3.3 WAR in 35(!) games, he's on pace to pass another twenty guys in WAR before the All-Star break. not to mention being on pace for a WAR over 14(!!)

Tim:
Mike Trout is 0 for his last 19. What’s going on? Is the world about to blow up?

Jeff Sullivan:
I like how he’s hitless over 22 plate appearances and his OBP is .318

So he will most likely pass Utley this year, and if Pujols retires this year or the next, he would stand atop the active WAR leaderboards.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 25 May 2018 16:00 (five years ago) link

don't forget Beltre!

omar little, Friday, 25 May 2018 16:03 (five years ago) link

or Cabrera and Cano...

omar little, Friday, 25 May 2018 16:04 (five years ago) link

goddamn 'active player' on fangraphs that take away the DL or suspensed when i want to look at whole careers.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 25 May 2018 16:11 (five years ago) link

He's already passed Cano on FG, Cabrera he might do it by the end of 2019. Beltre he is still relatively far from it.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 25 May 2018 16:13 (five years ago) link

what's crazy is that despite being ~ 25 WAR behind beltre, that's like about 3 seasons of trout away, maybe even less

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 25 May 2018 16:21 (five years ago) link

The way Pujols is playing, if he sticks around he might meet Trout halfway between Mike’s current WAR and his own.

jumped up into the top 200 in rWAR last night

currently hitting .313/.461/.687

k3vin k., Sunday, 27 May 2018 15:31 (five years ago) link

Mike Trout noted that defensive metrics didn't like him much over the last few years, decided he wanted to get better, and.. did. He got better. He's always getting better.

I’ve been watching him a lot lately. That swing of his, it’s so fast and compact and he just destroys everything.

omar little, Thursday, 14 June 2018 16:26 (five years ago) link

projections on fangraphs officially have him at 11.0 or 11.1 for the season...and those are the 50th percentile numbers

read this in a deadspin comment, haven't verified but i believe it:

the difference in fWAR between the #1 player and #2 player from 2012-present (Mike Trout and Josh Donaldson) is the same as the difference between #2 and #118 (Carlos Ruiz)

manfred isn't exactly wrong, but what a dick. the angels had two off-days in may (both of which were probably spent traveling). when is he supposed to 'do marketing'? what exactly is in it for him?

and fwiw 'off-days' aren't always actual days off, depending on an owner's priorities

Rob Manfred: Mike Trout limits his popularity because he won't market himself

Mike Trout, consensus best baseball player on planet and incredibly wealthy man, should do more things to promote himself

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 17:36 (five years ago) link

i wonder what percentage of mike trout's plate appearances have taken place after midnight eastern

mookieproof, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 17:57 (five years ago) link

I've often mulled over a variation on the same thing (haven't read the piece): baseball needs to do a better job of marketing Mike Trout. When I mentioned to my class in the spring that I was going to see the Jays play the Angels that night, not one kid had heard of Trout. There are mitigating factors there, primarily that we're in Canada, but still--they all know LeBron James, they all know the most famous soccer players, and most of them know Tom Brady. For starters, they should turn the year-end awards into a big televised production like the NHL does. I was watching that a few weeks ago, wondering why baseball doesn't do that. (Baseball saves their big production for the HOF induction, which, much as I might enjoy that, doesn't help market the game today.)

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 18:14 (five years ago) link

the game just doesn't lend itself to that kind of thing. lebron's on the floor for 40 minutes a game; trout gets to bat once every 45 minutes

but yeah, it's baseball's responsibility, not his. and maybe if baseball hadn't spent the last 15 years promoting the yankees-red sox show, people would care about the angels*

*probably not, but still
