the release of a new star wars doesn't feel like the huge cultural event that every other star wars was, including the 2015 one. i didn't see any trailers, pretty much only saw star wars superfans talking about it after it came out. i haven't seen it, probably won't get the chance, and i've never enjoyed watching any of the star wars movies at home

h8 it when serious adult cinema gets turned into cartoon

oh come on

Man, don't remind me about that The Seven Seals animated series. I feel like they missed Bergman's point entirely (although tbf there was that incongruous talking walrus in the movie so I can see how they ultimately arrived at that premise).

We do spend more time thinking about them than they do about us (no matter who 'we' may be).
We probably think about them less than they think we do, though.

OTM except I'm sure they don't spend any time thinking about us.

obv there was a lot of fuss surrounding The Phantom Menace in 1999, but did the the second and third prequels get much attention when they came out? I don't remember hearing much about them at all

I know I should not do this but:

the sad thing is the first film set things up very well. JJ included so many tantalizing mysteries.

Come on, man. *Even if* I grant this -- which I don't, IDGAF who Rey's parents were or how Maz got Luke's lightsaber -- when has that dude ever followed up on "tantalizing mysteries?"

we have the first black lead actor in a Star Wars series introduced as a stormtrooper and that has never been touched upon. we don't look into his past. we don't find out where he is from.

Aren't you one of the same dudes complaining about origin story movies like the Han Solo flick?

we don't even know is real name. this is two movies in and we don't even know the name of one of your supposed main characters.

Again, WGAF? There's no on-screen or in-universe reason to disbelieve his statement in TFA, "That's the only name they ever gave me." Just like the Jedi, the First Order takes these kids in late infancy to train them. They don't have names, they have numbers, just like the Clone Troopers did.

Monster fatberg (Phil D.), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 18:20 (six years ago) link

"Where did Finn come from before he was taken as a baby by the First Order?" is literally one of the top three least interesting potential Star Wars plotlines I can imagine. It's beyond irrelevant -- it's comically stupid.

Monster fatberg (Phil D.), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 18:21 (six years ago) link

i don't understand what is wrong with wanting a character that people have liked for 40 years to be written with consistency. this was the Batman V Superman of films. an angry teenager pretending to not care.

"duh it's always been a cartoon" is a misrepresentation. it has always been a pulp sci fi inspired by genre film. it was made by a film school guy who hung out with Coppola when he was making Apocalypse Now. now it is a fake cartoon of that.

the film has so many problems because this guy is a poor filmmaker. visually it is nice but you can learn that doing commercials. there are weird choices. why did we get introduced to a Stormtrooper and have it be a game-changing thing only to have none of that be part of this story?
Finn is a sidekick who is under-served and he is one of the main new characters. it is just not interesting as a pulp sci fi film. the ending in particular was un-satisfying thing to watch in a film full of visual spectacle. the main hero's final act and the set design was something i saw this year an episode of The Andy Griffith Show.

this is not my issue with the film. none of the main characters have family or even home planets. they are living action figures. they come through the film unscathed but with new accessories.

Can you honestly say this is something you truly don't care about?

Moodles, Wednesday, 20 December 2017 18:24 (six years ago) link

I don't care if people discuss a movie I haven't seen yet itt rather than in the thread specifically reserved for discussing said movie with other people who've already seen it. I really don't, at all. Please continue with my blessing.

Aren't you one of the same dudes complaining about origin story movies like the Han Solo flick?

what does that mean? Han Solo is an old character. i would rather them let go of the old characters and do something new. this is why i want to know about Finn. what is his story? where is he from? he had PTSD from being a storm trooper. isn't that supposed to be interesting? no, he's given a side story while the real hero combined Luke and Leia.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 18:24 (six years ago) link

Why are we having this discussion here?

Moodles, Wednesday, 20 December 2017 18:25 (six years ago) link

But starwars ~d i s c o u r s e~ is Extremely Bad and far less welcome than US politics obv

I maintain that there is absolutely nothing in Luke's characterization that is inconsistent with anything we've seen before and anyone who thinks so is not paying attention.

true, although i was a kid when the prequels came out & was very amped and very exposed but yes The Phantom Menace absolutely got wayyyyy more coverage than the others. maybe because everyone hated it ( i loved it). with these, it's like... really? do we need more star wars movies. i was so into them all as a kid, and by the time TFA came out i just didn't give a shit (saw it tho, was ok). i remember the excitement in 98/99 and the buildup, the mystery, the mythic status of the first 3 movies because there were only 3 and they came out many years ago.

xp woops lol no more star wars posts

flappy bird, Wednesday, 20 December 2017 18:29 (six years ago) link

this is why i want to know about Finn. what is his story? where is he from? he had PTSD from being a storm trooper.

1. He comes from the First Order, where he's been since he was a tiny little boy, being trained all his life to be a good trooper. There's a picture and everything in the movie. What else do you need to know? How could it possibly help the movie to know more, rather than satisfying whatever itch you apparently need scratched?

https://i.imgur.com/gPPBCxl.jpg

2. That portion of his character arc was completed in TFA. He was terrified of the First Order finding him and fully prepared to run away from Maz's castle with the two smugglers, then saw Rey being taken by Kylo Ren and realized there were things more important than his own safety and peace of mind.

God damn some ILXors are fucking bad at watching movies.

Monster fatberg (Phil D.), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 18:33 (six years ago) link

Please stop

Moodles, Wednesday, 20 December 2017 18:34 (six years ago) link

prequels were stupid but harmless. this actively takes a series that ended on a message of non-violence (Luke throwing away his weapon is when he won, he would let the Emperor kill him rather than fight). the new series is like nah, that was bullshit. violence is cool. "The war will always go on." great message.

i mean i enjoyed watching it but it was dumb as fuck and it is annoying to see everyone dismiss that with "lol you aren't good at watching films"

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 18:36 (six years ago) link

TBF, this confusion could've been circumvented if Rian Johnson hadn't insisted upon the title Star Wars Episode VIII: Things You Just Don't Care About.

The way I look at it, regardless of topic, if you have to write 20 paragraphs about why you don't care about something, perhaps you are not really in touch with your true feelings

I despise Star Wars with some considerable energy, so I can't really say I don't care. I've hated it since a child abuser forced me to watch all of them in one marathon sitting in Bradford in the 80's.

It's not so much that I don't care (I have friends and family who live there, quite aside from anything else) but I do kinda resent/lament just how much of your shitty dumb politics we all apparently have to know about. Obv this is amplified by the internet but like constant updates on whether an election in Alabama would be won by a paedophile or a non-paedophile, it's pretty wearying - you'd legitimately wonder if we actually did have our own problems sometimes, the inordinate attention paid to this shit over here
