Trying to think of something I haven't mentioned throughout the year... well I know some people round here like quasi-prog OSDM (name subject to change) so I'll boost the Execration - Return to the Void, it's a lot leaner than their previous album and maybe a sharper attack, in any case it's got those space monster vibes and great big dirty riffs that everyone should love.

That Mesarthim EP is really lovely as usual

Cardi ACS (imago), Monday, 11 December 2017 22:21 (six years ago) link

Yellow Eyes released my favourite "straight" black metal album this year, those riffs are USBM perfection.

Corpse Garden have taken death metal to new Costa Rican levels with their weirdly-titled and utterly kickass IAO 269

surely any baby conveyance labelled with Pantera should be one of those massive obnoxious fucking battle-carriages people insist on bringing onto buses

Why did I wait so long to listen to the Oxbow album?

I own 8 of them! must be a 21st century record for me

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 21:00 (six years ago) link

the #1's not bad, sort of streamlined balloucore?

basically. weird undistinguished record to pick as no. 1 but not horrible

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 21:59 (six years ago) link

should i be delighted or appalled that enter shikari are still going

Cardi Acs (imago), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 22:02 (six years ago) link

might go with 'both'

Cardi Acs (imago), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 22:02 (six years ago) link

the new album is their first good one. i like it a lot

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 22:09 (six years ago) link

does the extremely synthy/proggy arcane roots record count, there's at least four minutes of heavy riffage on the record

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 22:12 (six years ago) link

I've just blurted out "fucking hell they're still going?" about 15 times in 30 seconds gj kerrang

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 22:15 (six years ago) link

I'd like to nominate pretty much every album from the Stereogum list that hasn't been nominated yet, because every album I've sampled so far from that list has been great:

Rope Sect - Personae Ingratae
Violet Cold - Anomie
No Faith - Forced Subservience
Sabbath Assembly - Rites of Passage
Hell - Hell
Verge - The Process of Self-Becoming
Jassa - Incarnation of the Higher Gnosis
Psudoku - Deep Space Psudokument
Chaos Moon - Eschaton Mémoire
Unearthly Trance - Stalking the Ghost
Turia - Dede Kondre
Condor - Unstoppable Power
Heretoir - The Circle
Demonic Death Judge - Seaweed
Arkhtinn - V
Au Dessus - End of Chapter
Sarcasm - Within the Sphere of Ethereal Minds

Also, the Pillorian album is called Obsidian Arc

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 14 December 2017 08:18 (six years ago) link

Going through the Stereogum list myself. It's....well aside from the albums I already know and love there's some decent stuff, but nothing to really blow me away. Dodecahedron was threatening to be quite good but didn't hang on. Anyway I'm only a quarter of the way through so who knows

Cardi Acs (imago), Thursday, 14 December 2017 14:54 (six years ago) link

from the Kerrang list I'm gonna go ahead and add

Creeper - Eternity, In Your Arms (I hesitated at first but honestly it's at least as heavy as Ghost and QOTSA)
Arcane Roots - Melancholia Hymns
Glassjaw - Material Control

Simon H., Thursday, 14 December 2017 15:00 (six years ago) link

Just found out that Mesarthim had The Great Filter and Type III released as a single disc by Avantgarde Music. This presents an ethical difficulty for me

Cardi Acs (imago), Thursday, 14 December 2017 15:10 (six years ago) link

Does it count?

Cardi Acs (imago), Thursday, 14 December 2017 15:11 (six years ago) link

simon we generally automatically include as nominations anything that gets in Kerrang/Decibel/Terrorizer/Revolver lists

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 14 December 2017 15:13 (six years ago) link

ehhh xp

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 December 2017 15:15 (six years ago) link

I think maybe it doesn't count, which is a shame. If they'd held off releasing the tracks individually last December it'd be a clear AOTY contender

Cardi Acs (imago), Thursday, 14 December 2017 15:17 (six years ago) link

i will probably vote for the presence ep

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 December 2017 15:17 (six years ago) link

oh me too, the title track is one of the most audacious things ever released under the 'metal' banner

Cardi Acs (imago), Thursday, 14 December 2017 15:18 (six years ago) link

simon we generally automatically include as nominations anything that gets in Kerrang/Decibel/Terrorizer/Revolver lists

can't wait to vote for Paramore

Simon H., Thursday, 14 December 2017 15:20 (six years ago) link

A few usually do

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 14 December 2017 16:04 (six years ago) link

And that would be totally defensible for literally any other Paramore album

Simon H., Thursday, 14 December 2017 16:11 (six years ago) link

as far as I remember there are basically no metal or even rock elements on the Linkin Park album either.

Simon H., Thursday, 14 December 2017 16:21 (six years ago) link

there are none

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 December 2017 16:41 (six years ago) link

i mean "talking to myself" is arguably "rock" but that's as close as it gets

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 December 2017 16:41 (six years ago) link

Remember to nominate your faves in
ILM's 2017 End of Year Tracks & Albums Poll / NOMINATIONS THREAD

Pyrolatrous - Teneral

(my campaigning buzzwords for the above: Gilead Media, Krallice drummer)
