David Hayter & all the celebrity comedians they've had on are definitely more mainstream than this person
― flappy bird, Monday, 11 December 2017 18:28 (six years ago) link
they've had patton oswalt on
― -_- (jim in vancouver), Monday, 11 December 2017 18:29 (six years ago) link
I guess I meant in terms of political commentators/personalities. (the Hayter segment was on some other Felix podcast btw)

I had a dream that the Chapo gang roasted me

ohh yeah. yeah that makes sense. still hoping for a Chris Hayes appearance on Chapo, that seems like a possibility (he is a premium subscriber iirc)

is nomiki konst mainstream? the neera tanden minions of the world still act like she & the unity commission are fringe nobodies
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 11 December 2017 19:27 (six years ago) link
yeah i wasn't familiar with her before reading this thread this morning (haven't heard the new ep yet), looked her up, since when is TYT mainstream?
― flappy bird, Monday, 11 December 2017 19:27 (six years ago) link
also for the record i have never listened to more than 5 minutes of this stupid show because i already know plenty of obnoxious loud white bearded socialists with podcasts and unlike these superstars i can at least tell my local brocialists apart on the mic
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 11 December 2017 19:29 (six years ago) link
i think they've trolled/said mean things about chris hayes, not sure if that means he's verboten

again I only inferred mainsteamness because on top of TYT she's a CBS correspondent and has also been on Fox. I don't think neera tanden stans are necessarily the best judges of who and who is not on the fringe
I'm actually not sure all the CTH people are even socialists
― Simon H., Monday, 11 December 2017 19:33 (six years ago) link
they tweet at each other though, yeah they've had disagreements on there but Chris is a fan & im p sure they agree with the consensus that Chris is by far the best MSNBC host, at least certainly the most amenable to leftist politics

felix supports the organization of the mojahedin of the islamic revolution of iran iirc xp

do people come onto other podcast threads to vent their disgust at their imagined versions of the hosts or is this a cth specific thing
― oiocha, Monday, 11 December 2017 20:17 (six years ago) link
they probably do. like i could probably make up some imagined pod save america content in my head lol

happily i don't have to imagine amber's unpleasantness, she spleened at me in person outside a bar because i'd sent a skeptical tweet about her review of The Purge

i think it's an effect of something becoming very popular very quickly, people do the same thing in music threads/movie threads/etc.

i don't know what spleened means and i don't know if joan's post is directed at hoos's opinion of unpleasantness or amber's behavior

Spleened meaning "expressed anger at"
I didn't think I'd made this usage up (I swear its a Shakespeare thing or something) but maybe I did
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 01:50 (six years ago) link
One “vents spleen” or “is full of spleen”, I’m not sure if “spleen” (v. intr.) is attested by Shakespeare.
― .oO (silby), Tuesday, 12 December 2017 01:56 (six years ago) link
First OED citation for spleen v intr is from 1885 and the entry says “US”

i did know about the use of spleen as a noun just not a verb. i remember reading a weird translation of notes from underground when i was like 17 and stopping after the first sentence. "i am ill. i am full of spleen and repellent." because come on.

― louise ck (milo z), Tuesday, 12 December 2017 02:42 (six years ago) link
amber seems like one of those people who would be a great and loyal friend and responsible for some unforgettable memories but also awful to deal with 90% of the time.
anyway fwiw the shared opinion on chapo among me and most people i know who listen besides the extremely online status freaks is "they say and do some things i wish they wouldn't but ultimately they're chaotic good and i appreciate them".
― oiocha, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 02:53 (six years ago) link

out of curiosity how does a HOOS feel about DSA? (I am not a member or uh american so it really is just curiosity)
― Simon H., Tuesday, 12 December 2017 03:25 (six years ago) link
It's gone from a bookclub to a fighting organization. I think the way they're deliberately taking a variety of approaches, from serve the people programs to electoral ground game, is the best approach for an organization that wants to build its membership. Add to that that they're enabling great campaigns, and connecting everyday people with socialism as they change their brake lights, and I think they're doing powerful work.
You might say there's still the matter of settling on what socialism is, but that's part of the ride when you're building a big tent.
I'm a member & am relatively active with my local chapter--I lead an anti-eviction canvassing team as part of a larger campaign an old Occupy friend conceived.
Also their national staff rent space in my org's office & the outgoing Deputy Director is a good friend. He humors me by chatting about the week's Online DSA Gossip. Last week Amber was defending a woman who'd said she wanted to punch a member of the NPC in the face ("he's so condescending," she said). [The guy she was threatening happens to be a friend. So I stay a little salty at her I guess.]
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 03:56 (six years ago) link
Oh over the summer I helped organize a bunch of decentralized sit-ins--DSA was part of the coalition, which meant really meant DSA chapters. I was super impressed at how their chapters were able to turn out committed people for civil disobedience. The Cincy chapter are rad fuckin people--they did an overnight sit-in with a couple of folks in wheelchairs.

that matches my outside perception of the good things they've been up to. I'd kill for Canada to have a big-tent org like that tbh
