four months pass...

and they're off!

StanM, Saturday, 21 April 2018 15:29 (five years ago) link

Yes, Selby out and Ronnie through!

xyzzzz__, Monday, 23 April 2018 22:13 (five years ago) link

a thing we can agree on

imago, Monday, 23 April 2018 22:22 (five years ago) link

G'wan Ronnie

Shaun Murphy is out too thank fuck

xyzzzz__, Monday, 23 April 2018 22:35 (five years ago) link

i feel softer towards him as he's a good sport, but yeah

imago, Monday, 23 April 2018 22:36 (five years ago) link

back to disagreeing then. 100% joy at seeing this fucker go just now.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 23 April 2018 22:41 (five years ago) link

Agreed. xp

In 2018 snooker is in dire need of a new Alex Higgins or Jimmy White, though. Ronnie alone can't save us from the dullness. It'd be too much to ask.

kyren wilson is...something. luca brecel hasn't rly happened

imago, Monday, 23 April 2018 22:44 (five years ago) link

I don't think we need a new Jimmy White or Alex Higgins (esp the former, I don't want any maverick briliance without a world title). I do miss the period of time when O'Sullivan/Hendry/Williams/Higgins were at their peak (roughly from '96 - '04). No real grouping like that has emerged.

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 24 April 2018 08:35 (five years ago) link

And only Selby (whom I do like but wanted to go as I knew he was the only one capable of beating peak O'Sullivan) has managed to be consistent enough to capture multiple world titles and dominate the stage for a significant period since then.

This is true, I must concede. Still breaks my heart. Also agreed on the '96-'04 period. It's much more scattered these days.

just let them smoke and drink again, then we'll start to see the characters

thomasintrouble, Tuesday, 24 April 2018 20:33 (five years ago) link

Ali Carter is really holding up against Ronnie: 9-7 up.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 28 April 2018 11:15 (five years ago) link

Ronnie did win the last two frames last night in about fifteen minutes

imago, Saturday, 28 April 2018 12:51 (five years ago) link

so... Higgins for the win now?

StanM, Saturday, 28 April 2018 16:04 (five years ago) link

literally anyone but him pls

imago, Saturday, 28 April 2018 16:22 (five years ago) link

Anyone but Judd Trump. Thankfully Higgins should beat him.

Got a feeling Mark Allen could come through in that top half.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 28 April 2018 20:23 (five years ago) link

ding ftw

judd trump is an irritant too though yes

imago, Sunday, 29 April 2018 09:24 (five years ago) link

Higgins is two ahead as he goes to the final session of his SF against Wilson. He does look good, and he has a habit of crushing young people's dreams. Judd Trump had him on the ropes and the comeback once Judd made the error (great breakbuilder but he still misses the key shot) in that QF was maginificent.

Barry Hawkins has just gone 11-10 up. If he wins I can't see him beating Higgins, should he get to the final. Its a big ask as he has yet to overcome the SF stage and Williams will punce on any hesitation.

? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_World_Snooker_Championship : Hawkins lost the final to O'Sullivan in 2013

StanM, Saturday, 5 May 2018 11:38 (five years ago) link

lol, totally forgot that.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 5 May 2018 11:42 (five years ago) link

Hawkins re-establishing a two frame lead with solid snooker.

Terrific break from Williams - just willing a one-visit winning break (included a plant and a tough red with the cue against the cushion, ton of pressure there)

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 5 May 2018 11:45 (five years ago) link

fucking hell Mark Williams man

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 5 May 2018 11:59 (five years ago) link

Pulling it out of the fire with that 50 break. Fantastic red to the middle and then misses a black off the spot! Time to punish now.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 5 May 2018 12:01 (five years ago) link

Hawkins punishes with a 73: 13-11. It feels like 15-11 but Williams is great at putting this kind of thing out of his mind.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 5 May 2018 12:08 (five years ago) link

Higgins - Williams!

StanM, Saturday, 5 May 2018 22:51 (five years ago) link

that was fairly brutal to watch by the end

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 5 May 2018 22:53 (five years ago) link

🎱🙌 No exaggeration - this is an unbelievable shot from Mark Williams!

And to think it comes in the pressure cooker of a gripping #Crucible semi-final

Higgins - Williams!

What century are we in again?

Kanye O'er Frae France? (Tom D.), Sunday, 6 May 2018 00:12 (five years ago) link

More like the wrong decade but they are two of the greatest players to have played the game and both have played some great stuff.

That shot is unbelievable. Thanks for posting it StanM, missed last night's action.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 6 May 2018 10:29 (five years ago) link

You'd think Higgins the favourite even before Williams' marathon last session last night. But its a two day final so as long as Williams isn't more than four frames behind by this evening I'd like to think it will be a good contest.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 6 May 2018 10:32 (five years ago) link

What's going on? Williams is eating sweets, potting a middle distance pink with his eyes closed and he's 4-0 in front!?

StanM, Sunday, 6 May 2018 14:38 (five years ago) link

ok, match on. 5 - 3

StanM, Sunday, 6 May 2018 15:55 (five years ago) link

much as i hate that higgins is here, this has the feel of a classic final already

imago, Sunday, 6 May 2018 20:00 (five years ago) link

Great red in the middle from Williams to kill the opening frame off. Really raced off the blocks for 11-7.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 7 May 2018 13:26 (five years ago) link

Astonishing two ball plant from Williams

xyzzzz__, Monday, 7 May 2018 13:42 (five years ago) link

12-7. Ruthless atm, this could be over quick.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 7 May 2018 13:47 (five years ago) link

At the next Higgins had a decent chance of a red but he misses by a bit, understandably under pressure.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 7 May 2018 13:53 (five years ago) link

What a red along the cushion from Williams to keep that break going

xyzzzz__, Monday, 7 May 2018 13:57 (five years ago) link

13-7

xyzzzz__, Monday, 7 May 2018 13:58 (five years ago) link

Williams is tearing it up rn

well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Monday, 7 May 2018 14:00 (five years ago) link

His timing is totally off rn. Higgins missing another after an unforced error from Williams.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 7 May 2018 14:12 (five years ago) link

This is a break of 35 but he has a couple of such terrific pots to keep it going.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 7 May 2018 14:16 (five years ago) link

14-7. Higgins needs to get one frame to get to a final session.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 7 May 2018 14:19 (five years ago) link

Higgins won the first after the mid-session.

In the next Williams went careless as he was about to win it. Now Higgins - after a stunning red - is favourite to steal this.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 7 May 2018 15:06 (five years ago) link

Great clearance at the last chance saloon: 14-9
