'We All Stand Together' is a far superior song to 'Wonderful Christmastime', IMO... better written, better orchestrated, better produced. I'm a huge McCartney fan, but don't consider 'Wonderful Christmastime' to be all that.

'Pipes of Peace' is superior too, I think.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Sunday, 10 December 2017 13:35 (six years ago) link

In fact...

It's telling that I'm one of the biggest defenders of McCartney's post-Beatles output, and a huge fan of synthpop, yet this song makes me wanna hit McCartney with the synth.

'Let 'Em In' works better as a Christmas song, IMO. 'Wonderful Christmastime' seems to have been an exercise in Macca seeing if he could get a Christmas No. 1 with any old shit.

I'm a fan of "We All Stand Together," too. It was cool that he put it on that Pure McCartney collection from last year.

timellison, Monday, 11 December 2017 00:22 (six years ago) link

It feels like he came up with that hideous synth line and then, wasted, chanted "simply, having, a wonderfulchrismastiiime" as a free association. And then thought wouldn't it be hilarious to put sleigh bells on it and actually put it out as a Christmas single.

I've noticed that this year I've been subjected to way more awful covers of "Last Christmas," "All I Want for Christmas Is You," and (absurdly) "Hallelujah" than in years past. Maybe it's an "internet radio" thing

crüt, Monday, 11 December 2017 04:06 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I don't mind hearing any of the classics for the 8,563,372,213th time but these newfangled covers are unnecessary and awful. Dagnabbit.

the choir is the only part of this song that doesn't sound like it was written and recorded on the fly. I used to hate this song for its laziness; nowadays I think it's kind of charming

I will defend this song to the hilt. It's my favourite

FREEZE! FYI! (dog latin), Monday, 11 December 2017 10:11 (six years ago) link

I have mixed feelings about this one. I love being there in the supermarket and suddenly hearing those synths, but the song itself is an awkward dud. There've got to be some good Christmas synth jams besides this one, right?

how's life, Monday, 11 December 2017 10:46 (six years ago) link

the obvious pick for 'good christmas synth jam' is Last Christmas

Wonderful Christmas Time is not really good but definitely very endearing for the bizarre vibe which is striking enough to be a welcome respite from most other christmas music

ufo, Monday, 11 December 2017 11:46 (six years ago) link

^ Indeed! "Last Christmas" is a strong contender for best George Michael composition ever, and the fact that it happens to be a Christmas song is secondary to its greatness.

Also, I think this thread should have been over after the first reply ("get the fuck outta here with this grinch bullshit").

enochroot, Monday, 11 December 2017 13:10 (six years ago) link

This song is best tolerated after the consumption of 4 or more drinks

fuiud, mac (rip van wanko), Monday, 11 December 2017 13:42 (six years ago) link

Hearing lots of "Last Christmas" is unfortunately apt given what happened last Christmas.

MarkoP, Monday, 11 December 2017 16:11 (six years ago) link

Sounds like he got up one morning, took his kids to school, came home and unboxed his new synth, made a coffee/smoked a joint, and knocked this out before picking them up from school in the afternoon. class.

I always forget that there's a De La Soul song that samples the McCartney tune:

I've always liked De La's version.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Monday, 11 December 2017 16:39 (six years ago) link

one missed step, in the car on the way home from school: ugh dad, the pageant's coming up and they made us practice all day long. wow, you're such a trooper! what're you learning? oh this dumb song about how someone's ringing the bell. huh! now that's a nice idea! sounds kinda familiar. (exhales toke) ding dong, ding dong.... now that gives me an idea...

two years pass...

I haven't heard "Wonderful Christmas Time" yet this year, but I heard Elton's "Step Into Christmas" yesterday in the supermarket, and it's 'contractually obligated X-mas tune' vibe really fits what I think Christmas 2020 is going to be like.
