Ostraca - Last
The Body & Full of Hell - Ascending a Mountain of Heavy Light
Planning for Burial - Below the House
Stabscotch - Uncanny Valley

gman59, Thursday, 7 December 2017 20:55 (six years ago) link

oh yeah the Stabscotch, whether metal or not, is certainly up there

imago, Thursday, 7 December 2017 21:21 (six years ago) link

I understand if you want Uncanny Valley off the list. No hard feelings if it doesn't make the spreadsheet. To me its about as heavy as any Cleric, Deafheaven or Mt. Erie albums that have made it in the past. Certainly weaves through a lot of genre's but it's pretty extreme. But yeah, I guess noise/experimental/avant would be the primary genres.

gman59, Thursday, 7 December 2017 21:38 (six years ago) link

Let's keep it in I say

imago, Thursday, 7 December 2017 21:41 (six years ago) link

Me too

the underground is pass-agg (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 7 December 2017 21:54 (six years ago) link

We've got QOTSA in there, which must make the first time MArk Ronson has had a production credit in one of these polls, so I'm not too concerned.

Simon H., Friday, 8 December 2017 03:26 (six years ago) link

Last Rites' staff list is up. I don't know around half of these!

https://yourlastrites.com/2017/12/08/best-of-2017-last-rites-combined-staff/

Simon H., Friday, 8 December 2017 15:52 (six years ago) link

Uh good work on the top two at least. And the Dodecahedron and Klabautamann albums are also pretty good.

ultros ultros-ghali, Friday, 8 December 2017 17:51 (six years ago) link

yeah the Pyrrhon album is pretty serious and will be on my ballot. also, Doug Moore is one of the best writers *about* metal currently kicking around

Simon H., Friday, 8 December 2017 18:02 (six years ago) link

Orthodox - Supreme

gman59, Friday, 8 December 2017 19:39 (six years ago) link

sund4r just played an Akvan track in Plug a while ago. Black metal played by an Iranian folk Jandek. Kickarse

Well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Friday, 8 December 2017 23:50 (six years ago) link

i'd like to nominate Igorrr's Savage Sinusoid. Surprised it's not already here!

beard papa, Saturday, 9 December 2017 17:51 (six years ago) link

Everything mentioned on the thread should now be in the spreadsheet. We're at a hair under 200 noms; we had 474 last year. Keep 'em coming!

ah fckn bbcode.

Siegbran, Monday, 11 December 2017 15:22 (six years ago) link

Will probably be voting for NM even if their frontman's disavowal of terrible beliefs was transparently disingenuous - it was a good album. I wish I knew nothing else about the band than their music

imago, Monday, 11 December 2017 15:25 (six years ago) link

This will probably also ruin the chances of QOTSA winning.

Siegbran, Monday, 11 December 2017 16:46 (six years ago) link

So is Eastern European exoticism part of Nokturnal Mortum's appeal? To be fair, I've only heard their first two records but they reminded me of post-1989 village wedding bands hellbent on showcasing their portable Yamaha keyboard at every gig.

pomenitul, Monday, 11 December 2017 17:52 (six years ago) link

xp

I've no doubts that Qotsa will suffer in ILX polls from now on much in the same way Swans did.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 11 December 2017 18:10 (six years ago) link

This will probably also ruin the chances of QOTSA winning.

tbf I wouldn't have imagined it placing above the mid-50s in any case

Simon H., Monday, 11 December 2017 18:13 (six years ago) link

Pretty sure I already know what will get #1 :x

I can think of something that'll get at least 2 #1 votes :D

ILX surely not boring enough to vote Bell Witch #1

your meat, my veg (imago), Monday, 11 December 2017 20:25 (six years ago) link

Bell Witch will probably be on my ballot, but fairly low. the length really does make it a prohibitive thing.

Simon H., Monday, 11 December 2017 20:35 (six years ago) link

I didn't like the Bell Witch album that much but I don't resent their popularity. But I seem to remember speculation about placings etc is frowned upon so I'll just say they weren't who I was thinking of and leave it at that.

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 11 December 2017 21:08 (six years ago) link

Oh I didn't mind it. Perfectly pleasant, gave it 6/10. I will now work out what you were thinking of and not spill it all over ILM

your meat, my veg (imago), Monday, 11 December 2017 21:10 (six years ago) link

why not get some early campaigning for albums done? It always helps album placings when people campaign for them

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 11 December 2017 21:14 (six years ago) link

oh I just realised who you're thinking of

ugh ffs

I'd like to offer a shout-out to last year's deserved runaway winners Oranssi Pazuzu, who released a 2-track EP that's definitely too short to nominate here, but which contains one of the best metal SONGS of the year, Värimyrsky. Keep it up you crazy spacemen

your meat, my veg (imago), Monday, 11 December 2017 21:21 (six years ago) link

I totally overlooked that, I often ignore EPs for some reason. Virus had one out too this year as well that I haven't heard.

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 11 December 2017 21:24 (six years ago) link

oh shit cool

your meat, my veg (imago), Monday, 11 December 2017 21:24 (six years ago) link

fuckit

Oranssi Pazuzu - Farmakologinen
Virus - Investigator

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 11 December 2017 21:25 (six years ago) link

fyi Farmakologinen is a rerelease of their first EP and I was thinking of Kevät/Värimyrsky

your meat, my veg (imago), Monday, 11 December 2017 21:26 (six years ago) link

But yeah, if people could talk about their favourite metal albums that would be delightful cheers

your meat, my veg (imago), Monday, 11 December 2017 21:29 (six years ago) link

xp oooops good catch

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 11 December 2017 21:31 (six years ago) link

aye i hate waiting for voting thread to hear about what to listen to, sell me on good albums now so they have time to sink in, i cant do that lj thing of hearing the album of the year on first listen, lol. Not criticising him btw, its just not something i do usually.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 11 December 2017 21:36 (six years ago) link

Have listened to my own #1 metal choice maaaaaybe twenty times over the last five days fyi. and already recommended it to you :P

Siegbran, Monday, 11 December 2017 22:06 (six years ago) link

Trying to think of something I haven't mentioned throughout the year... well I know some people round here like quasi-prog OSDM (name subject to change) so I'll boost the Execration - Return to the Void, it's a lot leaner than their previous album and maybe a sharper attack, in any case it's got those space monster vibes and great big dirty riffs that everyone should love.

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 11 December 2017 22:19 (six years ago) link

That Mesarthim EP is really lovely as usual

Cardi ACS (imago), Monday, 11 December 2017 22:21 (six years ago) link

Yellow Eyes released my favourite "straight" black metal album this year, those riffs are USBM perfection.

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 11 December 2017 22:23 (six years ago) link

Corpse Garden have taken death metal to new Costa Rican levels with their weirdly-titled and utterly kickass IAO 269

I guess if we have the Chelsea Wolfe album this one should be fair game:

Lingua Ignota - All Bitches Die

o. nate, Wednesday, 20 December 2017 02:15 (six years ago) link

I mean the Wolfe album *is* unquestionably metal for long stretches but yeah the Lingua Ignota is fine by me

Simon H., Wednesday, 20 December 2017 02:19 (six years ago) link

Slaughtbbath - Contempt, War and Damnation

The Fortnightly Intruder (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 05:17 (six years ago) link

Nominations are closed. 472 albums in all - 2 shy of last year.

Simon H., Wednesday, 20 December 2017 12:05 (six years ago) link

voting prob wont start til tomorrow so I'm sure if there's anything been missed you can add before seandalai opens.

Plus we usually allow nominations to be added after votings started because there's always people who say they didn't know nominations were started

been busy lately as my mum broke her leg on the icy path across the road last friday as the council hadn't gritted the roads and paths. So its going to be even more hectic once she gets home (dunno when)

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 17:07 (six years ago) link

yeah gl with that. no rush with anything

Cardi Acs (imago), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 17:14 (six years ago) link

Since I neglected a couple on the falser end, I'll add them to put us on par with last year:

Gold Key - Hello, Phantom
Grave Pleasures - Motherblood

Simon H., Wednesday, 20 December 2017 19:04 (six years ago) link

Hey, this Elder album isn't half bad you know. This kind of "stoner" stuff isn't usually my kind of thing.

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 20 December 2017 19:31 (six years ago) link

...And you will know us by the Crack the Skye

The Body - A Home on Earth

gman59, Thursday, 21 December 2017 08:12 (six years ago) link

I just found a few more via those handy new Spotify genre lists

Throane - Plus une main a mordre
Vassafor - Malediction
JoDöden - Sittandes i sjön med vatten över huvudet
Saiva - Markerna bortom
Vukari - Divination

Simon H., Thursday, 21 December 2017 14:28 (six years ago) link

Is it common knowledge that Phil from Vassafor played bass for the Chills once? Just for a tour. So weird.

The Fortnightly Intruder (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 21 December 2017 18:46 (six years ago) link

imago, you might get some mileage from the Multishiva album? It's basically blackened sludge with lots of Värähtelijä-style effects on top
