I want to plug Dazey and the Scouts' Maggot, which is def less hardcore than most stuff discussed here but is a fantastic, funny, and emotional queer rock record I'm angry I learned of too late to nominate for the 77.

I go and see old punk reunions so you don't have to. My public service announcement is that the Crippens who are the current incarnation of Doctor & the Crippens, late 80s UKHC, are definitely worth seeing in 2018

I am interested but this music is pretty dilettante-proof - where even to begin? What are the weirdest acts you've listed?
― imago, Saturday, 16 February 2019 12:00 (five years ago) link
hmm tbh a lot of that is pretty straight-up hardcore (one might even use the word generic but I like generic hardcore so...)
I would recommend you listen to the Ex though if you don't already know them. Maybe Hank Wood & The Hammerheads, Constant Mongrel, Suburban Homes, Cool Greenhouses
Cold Meat was one of my favourite singles of the year. That Bib discography compilation was great too
― Colonel Poo, Saturday, 16 February 2019 12:17 (five years ago) link
Constant Mongrel sound good. They sound like Total Control! Oh wait they kind of share members with them and everything haha

iirc nobody gives the slightest shit about punk on ILM in 2019 but I have greatly enjoyed Scrap Brain who have a new album out next week (and they've been covering the Fatal Microbes which I have a huge soft spot for)

I should read this thread more. I loved Circle Thinking but had no idea they released another full-length in 2017, nor that they have broken up. A lot of good stuff on World of Grief too, it seems. Despite the different rhythm section, it hits a lot of the same spots.

where i can post about Civic and have everyone ignore it?
― With an Extreme Burning (aka The Tormentor) (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 22:40 (four years ago) link
I didn't ignore it! I just listened to the Those Who No EP and liked it very much. A decent lil cover of Needle in the Camel's Eye on there too, fully appropriate. Thanks!
― del griffith, Thursday, 29 August 2019 01:12 (four years ago) link
o cool! i've been listening to that and the New Vietnam EP and 7" fairly relentlessly. Australia really has a thing going.
― With an Extreme Burning (aka The Tormentor) (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 29 August 2019 01:41 (four years ago) link
that's funny cause I started listening to New Vietnam and couldn't get more than two tracks in because it was too "balls out" garagey/guitar soloy, then saw what appeared to be a different Civic on spotify, and liked Those Who No because it seemed poppier. almost can't believe they're the same band!
I think it was this thread's 2009 incarnation that got me into Eddy Current Suppression Ring for a while. good to know Melbourne's still at it!

there was no 2018 thread either. tbh punk gig audiences have been steadily dwindling in London/Brighton over the past few years so not particularly surprising
not that I can complain because I often haven't bothered to post on here either.
of Bill's list I'm only aware of Fury who I don't like much and Uranium Club, who've been around a while but never quite gelled for me until that new album which I do like
I went to a hardcore all-dayer this month which was fun, had mostly newish bands playing various types of hardcore - Never, Gutter Knife, the Flex, Big Cheese, Mere Mortal, Frame of Mind
some punky stuff from 2019 I've been enjoying:
Vaaska - Inocentes Condenados 7" (absolute ripper)Axe Rash - Axe RashBad Breeding - ExiledBriefs - Platinum RatsChubby & The Gang - All Along The Uxbridge Road 7"Current Affairs - Buckle Up 7"Diat - Positive Disintegrationthe Freeze - Calling All CreaturesGame - No One WinsInstitute - Adjusting The LocksKaleidoscope - After The FuturesMock Execution - Reality Attack 7"Scab Eater - Ultra ViresAsid - Pathetic FleshDisguise - Bas Fada 7"Haram - Where Were You On 9/11 7"Headsplitters - HeadsplittersHygiene - Private SectorIdiota Civilizzato - Civilta Idiota 7"Khiis - BezoarKriegshog - Paint It Black 7"Scrap Brain - A Journey Into MadnessState Funeral - Built For Destruction 7"Wild Billy Childish & CTMF - Last Punk Standing
― Colonel Poo, Thursday, 29 August 2019 20:24 (four years ago) link
I like seeing and hearing all this new stuff listed, and I love talking about punk but am sadly aging out of going to too many shows because of work and life in general.
Can we keep talking here until 2020 and start a new one then? Or just make an overall rolling thread?

listened to a bit of New Vietnam by Civic this lunchtime. into this, thanks for the rec
I've only heard the first album by Fury and that was pretty generic iirc. maybe I should give this new one a go...

listened to the rest of the Civic EP and this is right up my street. never seen them mentioned before outside this thread. the system works!

xp oh cool glad to hear it
that's funny cause I started listening to New Vietnam and couldn't get more than two tracks in because it was too "balls out" garagey/guitar soloy
Irony is track 3 "Satellites" and "Street Machine Dream" see them veer a little more into that poppy territory! Give it another shot when you've worn out Those Who No

not really crusty enough to hang with this thread, but definitely not emo, so whatever: I love Chubby and the Gang's Speed Kills, easily the most purely fun punk record I've heard in a long time
― bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 14:24 (four years ago) link
I haven't heard the album yet but the single was good.
but they totally count for this thread! there's no "must be crust punk" rule! I mean they are on Static Shock records
― Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 14:48 (four years ago) link
I have now listened to the Chubby & The Gang album and yeah it's a good one
also got tickets to the Thursday and Saturday of Static Shock Weekend. but not the Friday, which is when Chubby & The Gang are playing. probably can't really go out 3 nights in a row anyway. if I did decide I absolutely must have more punk rock that weekend the Subhumans are playing in Hastings on the Friday anyway, although that will probably sell out in advance. I did note that Sadistic Bomb Fuckers who flopson posted upthread (haven't actually heard them) are playing on the Saturday though.
