Being the kind-hearted person I am, I can confirm one of my upcoming projects next year is with The Cure with whom I have worked since 1981. This will be with the full participation of Robert. Updates when I can, but suffice to say it will be a 40th anniversary project.

And holy shit

Flicka flicka flicka. Here you are. Dust my lemon lies. 50 dusty boxes filled with memories. None of it seen before. From the 1970s to present day. Put that in your pipe and smoke it! More soon.

is there still a reissue / expansion of Mixed Up in the works ? that's by far my favorite Cure.

droit au butt (Euler), Sunday, 3 December 2017 16:40 (six years ago) link

Yeah that's what's unclear. If both audio and video could get properly jump-started here...

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 3 December 2017 16:42 (six years ago) link

hey, maybe the cure can leverage neil young's archive setup for this project! the key is to replicate the actual experience of opening a drawer stuffed with chaotically organized documents

Karl Malone, Sunday, 3 December 2017 16:47 (six years ago) link

Just listened to an interview with Tim Pope on Adam Buxton's podcast the other day. Buxton introduced the podcast with a disclaimer that Tim was not on drugs during the taping and something to the effect of "he is just a very animated man by nature". Disappointingly, they didn't discuss the Cure much, if at all.

how's life, Sunday, 3 December 2017 17:04 (six years ago) link

They need to do Mixed Up with all the 12" mixes (Primary!) and it wouldn't hurt my feelings if they packaged together the B-Sides from the Standing On A Beach Cassette (heck, toss on the 87-90 b-sides too).

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 3 December 2017 17:09 (six years ago) link

Just tag your Join The Dots rips that way, I did

"hey, maybe the cure can leverage neil young's archive setup for this project! the key is to replicate the actual experience of opening a drawer stuffed with chaotically organized documents"

that is the worst fucking UX I've ever seen on a website

So many demos and rare bits were floated out on the back of the 2cd reissues, I'm wondering then if this is some sort of visual retrospective

MaresNest, Sunday, 3 December 2017 21:05 (six years ago) link

Does read like a visual project.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 3 December 2017 21:24 (six years ago) link

something similar to this but hopefully better?

piscesx, Sunday, 3 December 2017 23:11 (six years ago) link

yeah - probably a box-set repackage of the old VHS compilations + Cure in Orange with added behind the scenes skits

Mark G, Monday, 4 December 2017 09:39 (six years ago) link

If The Cure in Orange is part of this, then it's about fucking time!

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Monday, 4 December 2017 09:53 (six years ago) link

I dont really care about videos - give me the Wish remaster and maybe a '40 Imaginary years' book and I'll let them retire quietly

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 4 December 2017 10:19 (six years ago) link

There's a ton of really smart early TV performances that I'd like to own in decent quality, foreign TV shows and things like The Tube and the Oxford Roadshow.

MaresNest, Monday, 4 December 2017 12:19 (six years ago) link

Wow 30 years since Orange, say it isn’t so.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Monday, 4 December 2017 12:25 (six years ago) link

I used to love the little interstitial bits on the Staring at the Sea VHS some funny shit there

MaresNest, Monday, 4 December 2017 12:35 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I remember there being a couple of funny bits of studio footage circa Japanese Whispers and The Head on the Door ... and outtakes from the 'Let's Go To Bed' shoot.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Monday, 4 December 2017 12:48 (six years ago) link

That was the bit I was 'do'ing

Mark G, Monday, 4 December 2017 17:57 (six years ago) link

I love that part where Robert and Lol are sitting for photos and Lol says something like, "I felt terrible earlier, but now I feel wonderful." To which Robert responds, "That's because of all the drugs we took."

And then turns and looks wide eyed straight into the camera and covers his mouth with his hand.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Monday, 4 December 2017 19:05 (six years ago) link

Hah. About half of The Cure's discography is about drinking or doing drugs.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Monday, 4 December 2017 19:12 (six years ago) link

Footage that surfaced earlier in the year, would buy the shit out of a collection of this type of thing.

Christ, HOW long ago did I start this thread. ANYWAY:

That's pretty awesome. Sometimes I think that they've been dragging their feet with this one because it's the last reissue anyone will be excited about.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 July 2022 13:52 (one year ago) link

Here it comes!

It looks lovely. The Lost Wishes stuff ought to have been on Join the Dots if there was any room but also their CD debut was always going to be one of the big draws to Wish.

Anyway I've/we've waited years for more instrumental demos - hope some of them are RS and his chintzy home get-up but I guess they'd be marked as such if so.

you can see me from westbury white horse, Thursday, 28 July 2022 13:58 (one year ago) link

You're welcome folks! I did that!

I'd been waiting years for this so I could replace my old cassette and burned CD copies, but I finally gave up and bought a new copy of it three weeks ago so OF COURSE this gets announced now.

Kidding aside, looks great!

Definitely going to be worth having a non-mastered disc of any Cure album still kicking around.

Sometimes I think that they've been dragging their feet with this one because it's the last reissue anyone will be excited about.

I realize WMS is not going to be high on priority lists -- some excellent live shows from that era, though -- but I do want to see Bloodflowers get the treatment just so at long last there's a properly available version of "Spilt Milk," absolutely one of the greatest songs, and I still don't know why it never made Join the Dots.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 July 2022 16:20 (one year ago) link

oh i'm actually v curious about what a wms reissue would entail

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 July 2022 16:29 (one year ago) link

it would be very cool to see some of the full swing tour shows released.

A few things missing on that reissue: eg unplugged Letter to Elise, live early versions from the secret gig, but yeah this is exciting.
Otoh the October release makes me think this was green lit once it became clear that the there would be no new album for the tour.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 28 July 2022 17:06 (one year ago) link

...too apt.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 July 2022 17:33 (one year ago) link

live early versions from the secret gig

I do half wonder if there's supposed to be a reissue of Show/Paris in the works with more.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 July 2022 17:34 (one year ago) link

I was thinking Show would be next. As its their only live album to align with a film a natural three-disc set is assumedly a possibility. Only problem with that is extras.

you can see me from westbury white horse, Thursday, 28 July 2022 17:45 (one year ago) link

I can't imagine quite what a WMS set would look like but it's probably where the existence of JTD would frustrate the most given those B-sides are better than a lot of the album.

you can see me from westbury white horse, Thursday, 28 July 2022 17:48 (one year ago) link

re: wish era live extras-
they recorded two full nights in paris. the coinciding album is basically a highlights disc. would love to see at least one of the complete shows released.

and yes it's short, but i would go goofy over an official release of their mtv unplugged set. licorice otm: that version of "elise" is magic.

All these early versions were infinitely better than the final studio takes

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 28 July 2022 18:49 (one year ago) link

seventeen years, a three-disc version, and STILL no release for Slvvy!

Vance Vance Devolution (sic), Thursday, 28 July 2022 19:57 (one year ago) link

This is such amazing news but I'm with baaderonixx, what does this mean for the new album?

Bee OK, Thursday, 28 July 2022 23:09 (one year ago) link

The only remastered one I don't own is Mixed Up but all the other ones I have the expanded copies. I will buy Wild Mood Swings as well, if and when that one comes out.

Bee OK, Thursday, 28 July 2022 23:11 (one year ago) link

checked and a Show reissue was first promised before the Wish reissue was

ufo, Thursday, 28 July 2022 23:16 (one year ago) link

I'll be buying WMS as well - its quality may, or may not, be patchy but it'll be fascinating regardless of its form.

I'm extremely fond of the original Mixed Up, which was a big CD for me growing up, so the deluxe was a no-brainer for me. The new mixes weren't all that but CD2 at least is largely solid (it was worth it just for A Japanese Dream with that crunchy drum outro).

you can see me from westbury white horse, Thursday, 28 July 2022 23:56 (one year ago) link

What are the best WMS b-sides? That was my first Cure album, which put me off them for ages. Even now I can hardly muster the energy to put it on
