is it more anhedonia or active nausea? I feel like with the former it's more like indifference, but choked down sounds like the latter.

are the stereotypical "eat apples/toast/crackers when you have stomach flu" lineup of foods easier to get down?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 01:46 (six years ago) link

yeah usually - that's what i have been eating
this is a little embarrassing
are you a doctor?!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 01:51 (six years ago) link

nope! just a dude who eats terribly and sometimes suffers for it. it's been awhile since appetite, hunger, and the food in front of me have aligned.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 02:03 (six years ago) link

eat terribly like bad diet or loss of appetite?
hi 5 to all my appetite loss amigos :(

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 02:21 (six years ago) link

often I'll be hungry but unable to muster the desire to eat a specific food, and when I do, it's probably not the healthiest, as my diarrhea diary (speaking of embarrassing) will attest.
I feel like there isn't enough English vocabulary or idioms around appetite and hunger to express what are really very different kinds of discomfort, so they all get lumped in to "i'm hungry/not hungry"
I heard a cool one that translated to "rats running around in my stomach" which is like a specific kind of hunger, right?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 02:30 (six years ago) link

i've had very little appetite lately, which makes sense. but i also feel somehow thicker, which seems rude

mookieproof, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 03:02 (six years ago) link

Sometimes I feel thicker if I haven't been drinking much water (read: tea) and so start retaining water.

Sympathies to you LL.

My own eating habits are admittedly strange but probably not fatal. I almost never eat breakfast. I often skip lunch altogether. At most dinnertimes I'll pick lightly at food in an obligatory way but my heart's usually not in it. Throughout the day, I'll grab a handful of almonds or dried cherries or something and I'm good.

At the same time, every week or so I'll have one rich, dense, sybaritic meal, like a pizza or a bacon cheeseburger the size of my head, and I seem to live on that for a while. That's how some snakes eat, right? Nothing for weeks, but then a whole monkey all at once, which takes weeks to digest?

Left to my own devices, I think I would eat only when I really wanted to. It's complicated somewhat because I am in a family, so we kinda have to keep up a regular rhythm (adults can choose to just graze; kids can't and shouldn't). So I keep up appearances. I pack lunches for the children. Every other night, I prepare and serve a decently balanced dinner, but frequently my heart isn't in it.

wow seriously, when i was a kid, one of the things i looked forward to most about being a grown up was not being forced to eat when i didn't want to, to be able to graze as i pleased. now that i can, i take full advantage and eat only when and what i want. usually that is a-ok fine, until one of these spells hits.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 15:41 (six years ago) link

that is not a commentary on parenting -- just a memory, like going over to grandma's and being asked to eat a huge plate of food for thanksgiving that i really didn't want. my mom is a grazer too.

six months pass...

i had some gnarly food poisoning a couple days ago and i have stabilized but the only lingering effect is a lack of appetite. i ate 3x yesterday but not much each time. i guess it takes a while for everything to regulate after a shock like that.

^^^ that time suuuuucked

It’s 2 years later and I’m glad I haven’t had to bump this thread since 2018 but today I did. Nauseated and very unable to finish my (delicious homemade) dinner for the second time in a week due to appetite loss & nausea. NOT GOOD!!

i've been eating one meal a day for close to a week. it's not unpleasant, i'm just not hungry at all

mookieproof, Monday, 3 August 2020 23:44 (three years ago) link

Not a good sign friend!!
I’m surprised more people aren’t plagued w this affliction of appetite loss during our extremely stressful times that we’re living in.

I think mine is work related, just so much uncertainty + hostility + exhaustion a person can stomach (lol) before it has a noticeable effect.
