i'm not sure why khalid is on the list as he has an album out, multiple hit singles and is already well-established. Sigrid seems like an obvious winner - perhaps too obvious. Otherwise I've not really heard of many of this year's crop. I understand that the Pale Waves are 1975-adjacent and Alma is a pal of Charli XCX. I like Yaeji's EPs and have read a few positive comments here and there w/r/t Billie Eilish.

i've noticed that the "no vowels" thing has evolved into just random letters mashed together, which tbh is more honest and respectable

flappy bird, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 03:33 (six years ago) link

Picked Alma based on the 5 seconds (or so) clips of the tracks featured on the BBC website. I know, super lazy.

daavid, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 04:05 (six years ago) link

...but really, nothing this year stands out. A few decent acts, I guess.

daavid, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 04:07 (six years ago) link

Could have voted for Not3s too.

daavid, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 04:16 (six years ago) link

yaeji is my most favorite new artist for quite some time. i voted for her.

joshywinty (josh), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 04:57 (six years ago) link

Both Yxng Bane and Not3s have been pretty big throughout 2017, both 'Bestie' and 'Addison Lee' have had consistent daytime Radio 1 play and the groundswell for this sound is clearly there so they're both a pretty safe bet at this stage.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 09:53 (six years ago) link

Previous winners include Sam Smith, Adele, Ellie Goulding, HAIM and Years & Years.

Sound Of alumni also includes Stormzy, Florence + The Machine, Rag’n’Bone Man, Chance the Rapper, Dua Lipa and Frank Ocean.

*silent scream*

imago, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 10:27 (six years ago) link

quite funny going through that clip video, nodding along at all the contemporary stuff, and then Pale Waves dial in directly from 1993

imago, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 10:38 (six years ago) link

based on that video, Nilüfer Yanya might be the one to show most promise, will vote thataway

imago, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 10:39 (six years ago) link

Nilüfer Yanya and Yaeji sound the most promising based on the BBC's descriptions (least appealing has to be "Gravel-voiced singer-songwriter Tom Walker"), will try and have a listen before voting though.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 10:46 (six years ago) link

Yaeji easy best. Superorganism and Lewis Capaldi tied for worst based on those clips

i know kore-eda (or something), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 11:03 (six years ago) link

Is there a token stodgy Britrock band this time?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 11:15 (six years ago) link

Pale Waves as close as it gets

imago, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 11:28 (six years ago) link

Rex Orange County maybe the worst based on the clips. A lot of 'worst' there though

imago, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 11:29 (six years ago) link

Superorganism look like a cheerful bunch and I like them because they actually sound like young and optimistic people there in the middle of the bleak and cynical badlands of instagram anxiety.

damosuzuki, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:06 (six years ago) link

Khalid is only eligible because his biggest hit was as a featured artist and because they changed the rules to just disqualify anyone with a top 10 hit as lead artist, rather than top 20 as previously. Which is a bizarre thing to do when it's now more difficult to get into the top 20 than a few years ago.

yaeji in a walk

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 16:49 (six years ago) link

i love yaeji but i'm concerned that she could be a flash-in-the-pan artist that's big for awhile but falls off the radar rather quickly. here's hoping that her debut lp is killer

josh az (2011nostalgia), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 17:36 (six years ago) link

I saw Pale Waves a few weeks ago and they were really good but I'm going with Yaeji

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 10:29 (six years ago) link

Yaeji certainly the most interesting. Most of the other stuff seems horribly over-earnest.

chap, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 12:31 (six years ago) link

over-earnest and under-musical

imago, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 12:35 (six years ago) link

will try and have a listen before voting though.

There are links to each one's "KEY TRACK" on this page:

including

"Mononymous Scandipop artists"

whose names shall remain mononymous.

Billie Eilish has made "probably the best Lorde song not written or performed by Lorde", which is a big claim. That's almost a genre in itself.

Nilüfer Yanya bowling me over rn

Jeff W, Monday, 11 December 2017 22:19 (six years ago) link

Yeah "Baby Luv" has made a late charge for my top ~5 or so songs this year

monotony, Monday, 11 December 2017 22:56 (six years ago) link

Listening now. Yep, I voted correctly. These chords! Did not see that coming

Cardi Acs (imago), Monday, 11 December 2017 22:59 (six years ago) link

holy shit that Baby Luv.. instant classic. my God!

Pale Waves in at #5.

monotony, Monday, 8 January 2018 11:14 (six years ago) link

superorganism are ok but it feels weird that theyre getting buzz right now because they sound so late 00s indie and it still feels a little early for that to be back

i want to like pale waves more than i do but all their songs sound the same

ufo, Monday, 8 January 2018 11:53 (six years ago) link

superorganism are soooo car commercial. based off the descriptions i read i was hoping for something with a bit more of that imperial teen weirdness. but they play it so straight. made me wish that elo tribute project with andy sturmer and one of the hansons would start up again.

maura, Monday, 8 January 2018 12:47 (six years ago) link

i will say that all my students this past semester, no matter their genre of choice, were pro khalid. a guest speaker brought in a yaeji track for discussion and some of the students seemed into it. i like billie eilish’s music although aspects of the project creep me out a bit.

SHOTS FIRED

you will excuse me for cheering a norwegian gold medal before the winter games even start right?

LJ: given that dichotomy, my guess is positive, ie just "really boring"? :-D

anatol_merklich, Friday, 12 January 2018 16:30 (six years ago) link

dang, sounds like it should be SHOT in singular; so much for memory

hey, man, don't kill her vibe!

Rex Orange County at 2 is astonishing BTW. I guess I should never be surprised by how shit the BBC are

#TeamHailing (imago), Friday, 12 January 2018 17:53 (six years ago) link

as mononymous Scandipop artists go, Aurora >>> Sigrid, but they're both really really boring, like all musicians who don't fuck around with mellotrons in 9/8 time ¯\(°_o)/¯

(tbh I like certain Aurora songs even though I concedee that she is the Dolores O'Riordan of the 2010s)

jesus and figs and science and the foo fighters (unregistered), Friday, 12 January 2018 17:56 (six years ago) link

'really really boring', cunningly splitting the difference between RB and RRFB. you're a born diplomat unreg

#TeamHailing (imago), Friday, 12 January 2018 17:58 (six years ago) link

Sigrid is so much better than Aurora, and a great performer. Her songs more of a mixed bag so far but some real highlights

abcfsk, Friday, 12 January 2018 18:16 (six years ago) link

aurora rrf boringalis amirite?
