BBC Sound of...2018

i'm not sure why khalid is on the list as he has an album out, multiple hit singles and is already well-established. Sigrid seems like an obvious winner - perhaps too obvious. Otherwise I've not really heard of many of this year's crop. I understand that the Pale Waves are 1975-adjacent and Alma is a pal of Charli XCX. I like Yaeji's EPs and have read a few positive comments here and there w/r/t Billie Eilish.

i've noticed that the "no vowels" thing has evolved into just random letters mashed together, which tbh is more honest and respectable

Picked Alma based on the 5 seconds (or so) clips of the tracks featured on the BBC website. I know, super lazy.

...but really, nothing this year stands out. A few decent acts, I guess.

yaeji is my most favorite new artist for quite some time. i voted for her.

Both Yxng Bane and Not3s have been pretty big throughout 2017, both 'Bestie' and 'Addison Lee' have had consistent daytime Radio 1 play and the groundswell for this sound is clearly there so they're both a pretty safe bet at this stage.

Previous winners include Sam Smith, Adele, Ellie Goulding, HAIM and Years & Years.

Sound Of alumni also includes Stormzy, Florence + The Machine, Rag’n’Bone Man, Chance the Rapper, Dua Lipa and Frank Ocean.

Nilüfer Yanya and Yaeji sound the most promising based on the BBC's descriptions (least appealing has to be "Gravel-voiced singer-songwriter Tom Walker"), will try and have a listen before voting though.

Rex Orange County maybe the worst based on the clips. A lot of 'worst' there though

Superorganism look like a cheerful bunch and I like them because they actually sound like young and optimistic people there in the middle of the bleak and cynical badlands of instagram anxiety.

Khalid is only eligible because his biggest hit was as a featured artist and because they changed the rules to just disqualify anyone with a top 10 hit as lead artist, rather than top 20 as previously. Which is a bizarre thing to do when it's now more difficult to get into the top 20 than a few years ago.

i love yaeji but i'm concerned that she could be a flash-in-the-pan artist that's big for awhile but falls off the radar rather quickly. here's hoping that her debut lp is killer

I saw Pale Waves a few weeks ago and they were really good but I'm going with Yaeji

Yaeji certainly the most interesting. Most of the other stuff seems horribly over-earnest.

superorganism are ok but it feels weird that theyre getting buzz right now because they sound so late 00s indie and it still feels a little early for that to be back

i want to like pale waves more than i do but all their songs sound the same

superorganism are soooo car commercial. based off the descriptions i read i was hoping for something with a bit more of that imperial teen weirdness. but they play it so straight. made me wish that elo tribute project with andy sturmer and one of the hansons would start up again.

i will say that all my students this past semester, no matter their genre of choice, were pro khalid. a guest speaker brought in a yaeji track for discussion and some of the students seemed into it. i like billie eilish’s music although aspects of the project creep me out a bit.

(tbh I like certain Aurora songs even though I concedee that she is the Dolores O'Riordan of the 2010s)

Sigrid is so much better than Aurora, and a great performer. Her songs more of a mixed bag so far but some real highlights
