classic episode. Larry's previous house owner coming to inspect his house and see how it's changed is an all-time nightmare scenario

In a slipshod style (Ross), Monday, 27 November 2017 07:18 (six years ago) link

pretty funny ep, laughed out loud at Susie gettin some cowboy shucker action on the DL

Lin Manuel Miranda/Hamilton appearance was funny but also confirmed my "this is the worst fucking garbage ever" allergic reaction to that kind RAP: THE MUSICAL crap.

Οὖτις, Monday, 27 November 2017 21:50 (six years ago) link

"It's the shucker's way..."

chap, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 13:52 (six years ago) link

xpost OTM. I live in such a vacuum that I never knew Hamilton was a ... a... "rap musical"!?! Jeez I thought that shit died out with poetry slams.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:20 (six years ago) link

turns out a huge swathe of the country actually think it's the greatest thing ever

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 18:11 (six years ago) link

well maybe not that huge idk how big theater audiences actually are tbh

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 18:11 (six years ago) link

the only RAP: THE MUSICAL production I would get behind is a stage version of Prince Paul's "Prince Among Thieves"

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 18:12 (six years ago) link

(which would also have to include all the performers from the record)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 18:12 (six years ago) link

It's the best-selling cast album in 54 years and the tenth-best-selling US album of last year, it's not just "theatre audiences" that like it

Also it's great

please don't sully this thread with talk of rap musicals

all talk of rap musicals must be rapped

Larry was OTM about apologies/gratitude in this episode, but his treatment of the girl who was a "stand-in" was pretty terrible. Good finale overall

In a slipshod style (Ross), Monday, 4 December 2017 05:51 (six years ago) link

was disappointed that it didn't end with him being murdered tbh

Οὖτις, Monday, 4 December 2017 16:31 (six years ago) link

Kind of like the Sopranos ending, if not now, at some future time.

nickn, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 07:49 (six years ago) link

Suzie's wedding outfit was hilarious.

one month passes...

Most of the time I carry myself in a mocha tone
But in certain parts of the year I’m more mahogany

calstars, Thursday, 18 January 2018 03:24 (six years ago) link

renewed

based on larry's comments in interviews, this is where he feels most at home, so perhaps this will just keep going...

kolakube (Ross), Thursday, 18 January 2018 03:55 (six years ago) link

season was a masterpiece

flopson, Thursday, 18 January 2018 08:52 (six years ago) link

two years pass...

I enjoyed last night's CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, and happy to see that MR. MIKE is still on Larry David's bookshelf. But it was upside down. Inadvertent, or is there a message here? pic.twitter.com/9oJQsaGHeJ

Fun episode all in all, but felt kind of forced it bringing it up to date. Kind of familiar standup gripes, expecting the next episode to have Larry get fed up with they/them pronouns.

... (Eazy), Monday, 20 January 2020 15:21 (four years ago) link

The “mocha joe” conceit is an old standby routine of Larry vs restaurants and felt kind of thin. But I liked the wobbly table. I didn’t think the harassment stuff was funny

calstars, Monday, 20 January 2020 15:35 (four years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Larry in the MAGA cap was funny, most of the rest of it hasn't been. The MeToo stuff feels lazy and tired at the very least.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 22:14 (four years ago) link

yeah it's not good. I don't if I'm bad now but I almost died at the fetus punchline at the end of ep1, but it has been downhill since then and into garbage Ricky Gervais type territory.

calzino, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 22:19 (four years ago) link

this season's fine, Susie and Leon are my favorites, Garlin looking like Weinstein is probably my favorite recurring bit

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 22:52 (four years ago) link

I like that bit too, but Larry's understanding of MeToo is nowhere deep enough for most of the jokes to land, or often to even make sense

MOAR PETE (sic), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 23:04 (four years ago) link

idk if anything more complex than "Larry sees a boundary and crosses it, sometimes inadvertently but usually because of a mixture of hubris and assholism" is required re: the #MeToo plot points

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 23:08 (four years ago) link

Liked the first ep a lot. Larry using a MAGA hat to avoid dealing with people is prime Curb. The Jeff/Weinstein mix up also pretty good and seems like it could lead somewhere pretty funny. Leon’s great as always:

“You know what I noticed? Nobody where’s those hats on backwards. If you’re gonna get your ass kicked, you wanna see it coming.”

brave. will give him that.

or maybe rash, idk

treeship., Saturday, 29 February 2020 03:01 (four years ago) link

He should have done more classic style schtick

calstars, Saturday, 29 February 2020 03:06 (four years ago) link

He seems like a worse guy than in the early seasons.

treeship., Saturday, 29 February 2020 03:06 (four years ago) link

I thought this last season too.

treeship., Saturday, 29 February 2020 03:07 (four years ago) link

I can’t do it anymore. He was having a good first date and then ruined it by acting weird about her recent weight loss.

treeship., Saturday, 29 February 2020 03:21 (four years ago) link

new seasons great imo

flopson, Saturday, 29 February 2020 06:23 (four years ago) link

He seems like a worse guy than in the early seasons.

why i stopped watching years ago. first episodes he found himself in spiralling scrapes inadvertently - “i was trying to be affable!”. then later he just comes across like an asshole and i didn’t find it funny any more. someone convince me otherwise!

Fizzles, Saturday, 29 February 2020 07:49 (four years ago) link

im watching season 6 in parallel and he's p much equally awful

flopson, Saturday, 29 February 2020 08:17 (four years ago) link

He’s always been an asshole, thats the joke! Rmde

"I can’t do it anymore. He was having a good first date and then ruined it by acting weird about her recent weight loss."

Were you actually expecting it to not go badly at some point??

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Saturday, 29 February 2020 21:20 (four years ago) link

Yeah the first three seasons or so have a basically well-meaning but petty Larry who fucks up again and again. The worse he is the less funny it is.

Matt DC, Sunday, 1 March 2020 14:05 (four years ago) link

I have not done a side-by-side comparison of Larry’s acceptable levels of being an asshole, but... really?

I’m behind on the new season, but did think the sex consent stuff in one of earlier ones was kinda gross.

circa1916, Sunday, 1 March 2020 14:37 (four years ago) link

Yeah seriously, watch The Bracelet or The Doll or The Corpse-Sniffing Dog again - tonally it's completely different. Larry is still a dick but he is usually trying to do something helpful and the humour comes from the fuck-ups along the way. He doesn't seem to delight in being an arsehole in the same way he does later seasons.

Matt DC, Sunday, 1 March 2020 14:42 (four years ago) link

I’d like to give it a full re-watch but in my mind prime Curb was after like the first season or two. I don’t think it’s at the levels it once was, but like Seinfeld it was one that really hit its stride after a little bit in.

circa1916, Sunday, 1 March 2020 15:02 (four years ago) link

It’s distracting having Nick Kroll and Fred Armisen playing characters who aren’t themselves, even though both do a good job.

... (Eazy), Monday, 2 March 2020 06:55 (four years ago) link

Timothy Olyphant, Vince Vaughan, Isla Fisher, half the characters in every season...

Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Monday, 2 March 2020 08:07 (four years ago) link
