fun to see this last revive where someone else discovers oxbow. i can't remember exactly when i did but my reaction was def "wait how have i not heard about this?"
been spending some time with the new one, these guys are aging like a fine wine. i can't get over how good the orchestration on "ecce homo" is.

it's sad how many mediocre motherfuckers in rock have gotten over instead of Eugene

The new live album with Peter Brötzmann guesting is as amazing as that should be. Highly, highly recommended.

this Brotzmann album is incredible. There's no point nominating it here for AOTY but it should be up there. Even The Wire didn't mention it. Very disappointing but it's Blistering good.

Even The Wire didn't mention it.
It may not have made their year-end list, but I reviewed it...

Just finally getting around to this thread's titular album, it's great.
Anyway, as far as the album goes, I'm hearing tons of Led Zep. Like, Led Zep all over the place. It's pretty great.
Glad I wasn't the only one to catch this! "Frank's Frolic" is where I really caught some Zep vibes.

They are basically the only band that really duplicates that big, magisterial swagger of L Zep, I'm not really even sure how they do it or that I could even quantify exactly.
The record with Brotz is just insanely great.

Zep influences were apparent even on "Fuck Fest", although they brought out a side of LZ your average classic radio fan would probably not like to admit exists.

So I'm a latecomer and only started with Thin Black Duke, so I've been working my way backwards and haven't heard the earliest albums yet.

I was aware of them for a while (the Fuck Fest ads in various zines were...memorable) but they didn't "click" for me until An Evil Heat which is still probably my fave
Also like Led Z, they are able to alternate between acoustic & electric settings without it diminishing any of their heaviness, in fact Oxbow sometimes I think works better as an acoustic band ( the "12 Galaxies" ep/mini-album deal being an example)
