Really enjoying the Miranda Lee Richards album Existential Beasts. At times it sounds like a companion piece to the Suzanne Sundfør album.

Thanks Ross! Big love to you too.

New additions to the playlist and a change (Knox Fortune song switched because I think I like this one better, but the whole album is good probably one of my favorites of the year) :

James Holden & the Animal Spirits - Each Moment Like the First
Grapetooth - Trouble
Knox Fortune - Lil Thing
The Shacks - Fly Fishing
E Ruscha V - Who Are You
The Proper Ornaments - Memories

James Holden, Grapetooth and Knox Fortune might be appealing to BOC fans. It sounds very much post-BOC and nothing like them but there's some elements: hip hop beats, vintage and eerie synths, summer feels, a certain childhood nostalgia to them. Holden in particularly is close to that sound but the other two sound like pop singles produced by BOC.

Before the year is over I'll try to cut the whole thing down to 50 songs. It's so hard, there's been so many good music this year.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 18:00 (six years ago) link

Read BOC as Blue Oyster Cult before realizing you probably meant Boards of Canada

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 18:02 (six years ago) link

Ah yes that's Boards of Canada! Sorry.

Presentable Corpse - Through Waves of Fog
Ge-Ology - Re-Fingered with Love

Love that new James Holden album.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Sunday, 26 November 2017 00:48 (six years ago) link

Just wanted to mention that Romeo Santos' "Imitadora" (which I already listed upthread) is great in various ways, despite some drawbacks.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 27 November 2017 05:31 (six years ago) link

SAICOBAB. New project of YoshimiO. Vocals + sitar + frame drum + bass. Whole album is great, but "Bx Ax Bx" is a good a place to start as any.

Jeff W, Monday, 27 November 2017 20:38 (six years ago) link

^ some righteous shit, Jeff

In a slipshod style (Ross), Monday, 27 November 2017 21:46 (six years ago) link

this is really good! although bx ax bx is the only one on their bandcamp so that's as far as i've got

nxd, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 09:31 (six years ago) link

Justin Adams - Ribbons

It is partly a more abstract take on various world music, which sounds like a frightening description, but I think the music is good nevertheless. Some tracks have Anneli Drecker on them (not someone I am familiar with, although I guess I have been very vaguely aware of the existence of Bel Canto). "Crow Dream" is a standout track (ahem, ulysses).

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 17:01 (six years ago) link

Electric guitar-oriented.

No Moon - I Left My Dial In Pirovac (Pt.2)

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Crumbling Castle

Big thief lp

lefal junglist platton (wtev), Friday, 1 December 2017 06:53 (six years ago) link

Was just listening to the accompanying playlist on shuffle and after a couple songs I wasn't too thrilled about, I hit one that finally made me ask "What is this?!" meaning: this is awful. Arcade Fire.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 1 December 2017 17:23 (six years ago) link

https://leegamble.bandcamp.com/album/lee-gamble-mnestic-pressure-hdbcd037

first listen (cursory), this is some cut n'pasty, OPN-like bullshit. 2nd listen, this is nowhere near KOCH levels. Third listen, 'holy shit!' - it's **dope** "af".. ultra-lean and concise, need to hear it again.

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Sunday, 3 December 2017 01:09 (six years ago) link

It's a fantastic album, one of his best (up there with 'Diversions').

Jungle/dnb died 16, 17 years ago*. Metalheadz, Fabio, Grooverider, Optical & Rush, Doc Scott: I commend them for plowing on, but it's sad really. *Nothing* of note, nothing evolutionary, nothing forward thinking - let alone brash futuristic, a core element of the genre - has come out since 2000 or so.

The only to in some way do justice, and use the breaks and synths of jungle past, is what Gamble does so masterfully. He doesn't do 'nods', but echoes and mutates what was so great about it and incorporates it into a sound palette of now.

* Disclaimer: I was a teenage junglist.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 3 December 2017 21:19 (six years ago) link

I think I like Mnestic Pressure even more than Diversions, it's definitely one of my favorite albums of the year

Dan S, Sunday, 3 December 2017 23:24 (six years ago) link

What is this year's big art-rock album? I feel like I'm missing something - a Let England Shake, a Moon Shaped Pool?

FREEZE! FYI! (dog latin), Monday, 4 December 2017 09:50 (six years ago) link

Don't know if it is art-rock but it sounds big (and fantastic): Oxbow's Thin Black Duke.

willem, Monday, 4 December 2017 09:55 (six years ago) link

dog latin you might like this Chino Amobi thing

Choco Blavatsky (seandalai), Monday, 4 December 2017 21:41 (six years ago) link

lee gamble album will provide me listening adventure for a long time, i'm still processing koch

brimstead, Monday, 4 December 2017 22:04 (six years ago) link

yea, dog latin and imago should check out Chino Amobi.. Lee Bannon's stuff on NON as Dedekind Cut is super fucked up as well

brimstead, Monday, 4 December 2017 22:06 (six years ago) link

Okay... this is amazing. I don't usually like this cut-up nightmare music but this is just too much of a trip

xo
the Rabit album is great

Dan S, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 00:37 (six years ago) link

this chino amobi album absolutely rules

nxd, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 09:23 (six years ago) link

No mention of the Errorsmith album, Superlative Fatigue? Android techno with a dancehall riddim vibe. It's pretty special.

FREEZE! FYI! (dog latin), Tuesday, 5 December 2017 10:02 (six years ago) link

yes! it's a great album! only found it last week so i'm guessing it's newly released or i'm very behind haha

nxd, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 10:03 (six years ago) link

Fits nicely into my current obsession with experimental riddim - Equiknoxx, Still, Palmistry etc

FREEZE! FYI! (dog latin), Tuesday, 5 December 2017 10:07 (six years ago) link

the Errorsmith album is good except the last track which is garbage but if you can get the chance you absolutely should go see him DJ, I saw him in January and it was INCREDIBLE, just so much energy and looseness and humour

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 18:36 (six years ago) link

Think I saw somewhere he's playing round my neck so I'll keep an eye out

moka, not sure why you'd place Today over voices if it's down to what's best, but YMMV

I’m still unsure about many of these not my final list. Almost every artist in there has another song or two which I can gladly replace. I have my own stupid rule of only one song per artist though... I might end changing some of these in the following qeeks.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 December 2017 06:40 (six years ago) link

admire yer commitment Moka, tho

In a slipshod style (Ross), Thursday, 14 December 2017 06:45 (six years ago) link

one song per artist is not stupid tbh

I wish the 77 had that rule tbh
