after one week with the iphone x i like it a lot. i don't miss touchid. faceid is probably slower, i think they make you swipe up to hide this fact, because it doesn't feel slower if you have to gesture. faceid has been very good, only not gotten me maybe once? screen is fantastic.

it also cost me $1250

i played with it in the store and i had a hard time swiping the upper corners when i held it one-handed. are you having issues with that or are you using it two handed?

the late great, Friday, 17 November 2017 21:28 (six years ago) link

I'm instinctivly worried that having to make eye contact to unlock would be a major hassle but I can't really assess whether that is such a problem in real life

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 17 November 2017 21:36 (six years ago) link

yeah there's no way i can swipe from the upper corners with one hand without reachability. i've adapted to using two

eye contact - it's not really eye contact more just like eye direction of the screen. it actually works too if i have my head tilted down parallel to screen but eyes looking at something above and in the distance it won't unlock

I sadly returned mine. I gave it the full 2 weeks, but it was immediately causing pain behind my eyes every time I looked at it. Haven't had any more pain since returning. Might go with an 8 on black friday, but may just hold onto my 6 until next year.

the late great, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:10 (six years ago) link

what's the future like?

the late great, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:10 (six years ago) link

a little bigger, a little dimmer tbh

bought a little inductive charger buddy for my desk at work but slamming all the apps back from backup is taking a toll

plus you can’t play with the phone while it’s sitting there, so I’m cable tethered for the moment

mh, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:14 (six years ago) link

tsk tsk you should be working, not playing on yr phone!!!

the late great, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:33 (six years ago) link

me too tbh

the late great, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:33 (six years ago) link

it's a shame their software is so fucking sloppy atm because the x is incredibly solid hardware

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:43 (six years ago) link

Still miss a headphone jack tbh

stet, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:54 (six years ago) link

I asked for AirPods for chanukah, not because my SE lacks a headphone jack but bc I keep losing earbuds

.oO (silby), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:55 (six years ago) link

I'll probably lose AirPods too but at least I'll feel guilty about it

.oO (silby), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:55 (six years ago) link

honestly i thought the lack of a headphone jack would shit me to tears, but i don't catch headphones cables on door knobs and tear them off my skull and fire them across the room and into walls anymore so

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:58 (six years ago) link

xp the airpods are fantastic, apart from regular split-second dropouts that only seem to happen when they're paired to my iphone. no other bluetooth headphones do it, and the airpods don't do it when paired to my watch. assuming it's yet another ios 11 bug that will get fixed in ios 14.

I know I’m an easily amused tween at heart, but... animojis!

going to torture some friends now

I got an X at the weekend and it is a massive improvement over the 6plus. FaceID is highly functional and the gestures have become very natural, I wish there were more or more that you could cutomise - turning on reachability was pretty useful.

Apple Pay is a lot faster and more functional, particularly when I learnt you don't actually have to be looking at faceID when it's on the reader. Just Double click on the side, look and tap.

I'm also impressed that lock screen notifications say 'Notificaiotn' till you properly look at the screen.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Sunday, 10 December 2017 22:31 (six years ago) link

face id is kind of slow but touchid got incrementally faster via software and near instant in the next model phone so I’m gonna day it’s already on the right track

(please do not save this and make me eat my words in a year)

mh, Sunday, 10 December 2017 22:41 (six years ago) link

FaceID works mostly fine (snappier especially after turning off the attention requirement) but once in a while the phone won’t unlock no matter how long I stare at it.
How do you activate reachability with the new gesture?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 10 December 2017 22:51 (six years ago) link

reachability: turn it on in settings, pull down on the bottom of the screen instead of up

mh, Sunday, 10 December 2017 22:58 (six years ago) link

It’s in the accessibility settings.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 11 December 2017 08:37 (six years ago) link

aha ok thanks - weird that they buried it in the settings. I used it all the time on my 6

two weeks pass...

about a month in face ID is the feature that noone wanted. appreciate the (almost) full screen, border-less design but face ID is a nuisance.

thinking that if they update the iphone SE this march as is rumored i may downgrade, but that's in the context of more broadly wanting to de-emphasize smartphones in my life

, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 21:17 (six years ago) link

hm, just not working fast or what?

Spottie, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 21:27 (six years ago) link

fails more often than touch ID, requires more thought as to ‘how am i gonna look at this thing til it unlocks’

, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 21:31 (six years ago) link

I want there to be a new SE but I probably won't even buy it until I hit the end of the road on OS updates on the current one. Definitely trying to tune out from my smartphone as much as I can

.oO (silby), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 21:32 (six years ago) link

feel like touch id, at least on the early ones where you had a learning curve of the timing and exactly how to get your finger on there and it became near effortless in the second gen

face id is a little tougher but I’ve already caught myself responding to the feedback curve of how to hold the phone, face angle, etc so it maybe fails once every other day

having to lift your head a little when grabbing your phone from bed is rude, though

mh, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 21:37 (six years ago) link

not unlocking when on the table and youre looking down at it is the biggest offender. despite my attempts to machine learn it. with touchid the biggest fail point was wet/dirty hands or gloved hands but otherwise worked great

also with touch id you could give multiple people access to a phone (ie put yourself on yr parents phone for tech support purposes) - cant do that with faceid also fear that youll mess up the machine learning by having it scan the non-primary users face too often

, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 21:42 (six years ago) link

Lame. Wonder if they’ll add the touchiD to the back of the phone for future versions like originally rumored?

Spottie, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 22:19 (six years ago) link

two months pass...

so my SE just straight up shut down on me this morning, on 17% charge. though to its credit it politely faded out the music first. it was -4C outside where i was using it. is this the vaunted low-battery fakery switcheroo everyone was up in arms about a couple of months ago? i put it into my pocket to warm it up, then tried again and it gave me the "you gotta plug me in" animation. i put it back in my pocket, and because i'm addicted to my phone, took it out again 5 minutes later, this time inside a warm-ish bus, and it started up, though it only showed 7% charge, which dropped to 4% in less than a minute. but then, like a miracle, never went below 2% for the rest of my commute. thanks apple?

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 1 March 2018 16:45 (six years ago) link

it qualifies for a £25 battery replacement until the end of 2018. not free but still pretty good.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 1 March 2018 17:05 (six years ago) link

if the battery is more than a couple of years old that's just life, especially in the cold. it's very difficult to accurately estimate how much is left in that situation.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 1 March 2018 17:09 (six years ago) link

i've had that happen in serious cold even with a relatively young battery

if it does it minus the cold, then worry IMO

Lockhorn. Lockhorn breed-uh (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 1 March 2018 17:28 (six years ago) link

I dunno my fb feed today has been full of (french) articles on how the cold will make your smartphone function badly

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 1 March 2018 17:41 (six years ago) link

yeah my phone did that all the time when i lived in actually cold places

gbx, Thursday, 1 March 2018 18:15 (six years ago) link

Yeah the switcheroo was designed to stop that happening.

stet, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:45 (six years ago) link

cold fucks with batteries. my 6 would shut down at ~30% in 3˚ weather, and once i warmed it up it'd take a while (and a couple of restarts) for the phone to register that the battery was fine again.

four months pass...

btw night shift is pretty good, been using it in beta on ipad

does it make all the text brown/red when scrolling on purpose or is that just a visual artifact of how everything has been mellowed out

Night shift rules

what are you supposed to do distinguish between the two-finger page turn swipe and the two-finger notifications center swipe?

They still make a MacBook Air??

faculty w1fe (silby), Tuesday, 21 August 2018 04:40 (five years ago) link

I’ve stopped keeping tabs, I probably will never buy a personal laptop again, if I ever need to buy my own work computer it’s gonna be a locally assembled desktop and I’m gonna put like OpenBSD on it or some shit

faculty w1fe (silby), Tuesday, 21 August 2018 04:41 (five years ago) link

Keeping personal stuff on my work computer would creep me out.

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Tuesday, 21 August 2018 15:44 (five years ago) link

I have a work laptop that I literally never use. I don’t want to keep my personal stuff on a work computer, and I don’t want rhe hassle of two computers.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 21 August 2018 16:30 (five years ago) link

Oh I just meant that all my work is on my work computer and if I can’t see myself buying a new laptop just for personal stuff if my current one breaks. There are very few transactions I can’t do on my phone, i play games on Switch, all my other hobbies are selected specifically to be analog. There’s still times where I want to do recreational typing and printing at home but idk I bet I could mostly live without it.
