I love the bass.

This could've been on the last album.

yeah this is one of my favorites although i have a lot of them

maura, Friday, 17 November 2017 12:18 (six years ago) link

yoooooooo

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 17 November 2017 13:16 (six years ago) link

"pineapple skies" and "told you so" have gotten me pretty excited for the album... could shape up to be better than wildheart for me :)

dyl, Friday, 17 November 2017 14:56 (six years ago) link

Yeah, this is so dope. Previewed on Snoop's youtube channel iirc

MikoMcha, Friday, 17 November 2017 16:35 (six years ago) link

damn this is electrifying, maybe better than anything on Wildheart. I'd basically written him off after all his garbage singles this year; feels good to be reminded why I used to adore this guy

Evan R, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:13 (six years ago) link

Told You So and Pineapple Skies are both so awesome that I feel bad that I doubted him. I'm still waiting for Skywalker to click.

kitchen person, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:19 (six years ago) link

Yeah I wouldn't hold me breath for that. I dunno if the tracklist has been released, but I'm still holding out hope Skywalker doesn't make the cut. Can't imagine how any album could work around that dog pile.

Evan R, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:23 (six years ago) link

"sky walker" is on it. also you're wrong

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 17 November 2017 18:20 (six years ago) link

"sky walker" is my least favorite among what's widely available so far but i can stomach it now, i accept it and don't feel it will be terribly out of place. honestly i'm just glad ~the marketplace~ is still allowing him to get hits even if they're not going to be the best work he's capable of.

the fuck is he still doing with J. Cole

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 27 November 2017 11:25 (six years ago) link

His second verse is shameful but I don't mind Cole on tracks like this. There's something so anonymous and nondescript about his rapping that his verses feel like an unintentional throwback to the NJS days, before guest raps went to big names or artists with visions and personalities. Back then it always used to sound like the rap came from, like, a backup dancer or friend of the producer who just happened to raise his hand and volunteer to lend the track some color. Cole raps about on par with one of those guys.

Evan R, Monday, 27 November 2017 14:36 (six years ago) link

miguel continuing to align himself with corny rappers, you don't say

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 27 November 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link

reminds me of seeing janet last week and having to suffer through the cole verse on "no sleeep" being needlessly piped through the soundsystem

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 27 November 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link

was pleasantly surprised when his voice popped up during the song on the closing credits of Coco.

Damn, Come Thru 2.0 wasted an opportunity to re-title it "Netflix and Chill."

billstevejim, Monday, 27 November 2017 19:03 (six years ago) link

Tour announced. I haven't seen him since Kaleidoscope Dream. Does he still do the rock band thing or has he toned that down?

Evan R, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:04 (six years ago) link

The last time I saw Miguel was last year when he opened for Sia; he performed in front of a bunch of screens with musicians behind him. Not sure if that was because of stage-setup constraints or what.

I do know that his longtime guitarist Dru Decaro is currently touring with Vic Mensa - I saw him open for Jay-Z the other night. What a show, and Dru was crucial to its over-the-top intensity. What that means for next year is anyone's guess.

Did anyone go to the Brooklyn show last night?

maura, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 16:30 (six years ago) link

He definitely did the full band thing when I saw him touring Wildheart.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 17:25 (six years ago) link

Oh yeah he did when I saw the Wildheart tour (like six times) too. But the Sia shows were I believe at the end of that cycle.

maura, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 18:34 (six years ago) link

"pineapple skies" is such a good song, jeez. even better in sequence

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 November 2017 16:50 (six years ago) link

having spent a little time with the record, i think it's essentially a hybrid of the last two, v bright and shimmery but also occasionally (especially toward the end) submerged and guitar-driven. i think it's as good as anything he's ever done. "now" is especially gorgeous

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 November 2017 17:44 (six years ago) link

one also has to ignore the guests for the most part (in retrospect it's a miracle that the only guest verse on wildheart is kurupt)

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 November 2017 17:45 (six years ago) link

"sky walker" also has an awesome new coda

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 November 2017 18:25 (six years ago) link

The album is indeed fantastic. I enjoyed Skywalker a lot more than I've ever done. The coda definitely helps, but hearing it without watching the video did it a lot of favours too.

"banana clip" is so good

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 November 2017 18:40 (six years ago) link

i wish "harem" was much longer than it is

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 November 2017 18:47 (six years ago) link

not sure this is quite as good as the last two but still very good

when the beat comes in on now!

ufo, Thursday, 30 November 2017 19:48 (six years ago) link

i love that part in “now,” it always makes me want to restart the album

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 November 2017 20:07 (six years ago) link

this is more of an OK R&B rock album than I expected -- a chewy Maroon 5 album I always wanted from them.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 1 December 2017 02:35 (six years ago) link

jesus i guess that’s something you could say about this record

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 1 December 2017 03:07 (six years ago) link

I'm going to assume that if I listened to this album 20+ times it would reveal itself to me in ways I'm not hearing my first time through, but I'm so goddamned bored with it I don't have another 19 listens in me.

^^^ that's the hook I've been unable to dislodge

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 1 December 2017 14:10 (six years ago) link

This album is wonderful. It's so bright and fizzy but every time a gutteral bass line cuts through one of those songs it's like he's plugged directly into my neural reward system

Evan R, Friday, 1 December 2017 15:19 (six years ago) link

I strongly disagree with Miguel's recent costume changes; however, he can use the parachute so long as he lands in my room.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 1 December 2017 15:22 (six years ago) link

"got a mind like columbine" less than 30 seconds in is up there with his most cringeworthy moves

album is pretty good though

anza808, Friday, 1 December 2017 17:21 (six years ago) link

ok so this is pretty solid so far. "banana clip" sounds like an AIWIY/KD throwback a little. dig it

Miguel as wannabe baby boomer pt 684 - you realise when you listen to this how rarely you hear the word "woman" in male-fronted R&B, or indeed most pop music these days. Certainly not in that sort of full-throated lascivious/longing way Miguel sings it, but that's everywhere in 70s rock and soul.

As a singer, Miguel seems to be on a similar trajectory to Beyonce post-4, that willingness to explore the full possibilities of vocal *performance* - the breadth and range of what he does with his voice is so much broader than it was on AIWIU or Kaleidoscope Dream - the way he can move from the swoop to the snarl in one phrase.

Also the bassline on Caramelo Duro rules.

Matt DC, Sunday, 3 December 2017 14:07 (six years ago) link

He loves singing, and that joy translates. He loves to sing and it doesn't make him self-absorbed like, say, Alicia Keys.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 3 December 2017 15:01 (six years ago) link

his songs are very loose

^^^^^this.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 15:21 (six years ago) link

I really like this, a lot more than the last one, and I thought it was a lot more instant too. It's not quite Kaleidescope Dream but few things are.
