oh my god, that is intense. that article is really good, too. the exchange at the end of that

Q: and the vibration of that, would be?

forthnecity? (forth density?)

update: lol, i can't believe i was hearing that as "forth" and not "fourth". after reading on in the the article, i see it's 4th density (out of 8), which happens to be the density jesus was on. good to know

You gotta make some synesthesia-inducing gifs!

i want to make one that induces the feeling you get when someone rolls up the bottom half of their shirt and drums on their belly just after dinner and everyone else wants to die - ratatatatatatatatatata!

gr8080 i meant to add, the guru stare video you posted reminds me of the last three minutes of this:

man, sorry for bringing this noisy issue up on multiple social platforms in a single day, but i have spent all day struggling with encoding/compression settings for a video. the GIFs above have a really low frame rate and quality - the actual video moves much faster and more crisply and i was excited to share it! i spent all night working on it.

but it turns out that while i can render a crisp, HD 1080p .mp4 that looks great on my computer, the same video looks like absolute garbage on instagram, twitter, and facebook. it even looks terrible on Vimeo, where I uploaded a 200 MB 1080p version.

https://i.imgur.com/D7pxHMQ.png
https://i.imgur.com/uwvjyUN.png

The top image is a screenshot of what the real video looks like when I play it off of my desktop. the second is a screenshot of how the same 1080p video looks on Vimeo at top quality playback. it's crazy! i'm thinking the issue is that the different platforms probably use some form of auto-noise reduction in their compressors, so even if you upload the highest quality noise it just makes it even easier for it to noise-reduce. but i have nooooo fucking clue what i'm talking about. if anyone else knows and could school me i'd really appreciate it.

anyway, i have learned my lesson, which is not to bother working with noise (possibly a psychologically healthy thing anyway)!

Karl Malone, Friday, 15 December 2017 22:57 (six years ago) link

It seems like any sharing platform will fuck up your shit. Just upload your full rez MP4 somewhere and put it in a video tag on a web page and call it KarlTube.

.oO (silby), Friday, 15 December 2017 23:00 (six years ago) link

lol it's not a bad idea!

tbh i think it would be a really neat thing to try to instead use the extreme noise footage in a VR setting. i have no idea how hard it would be to do, though, and it might make people barf

Karl Malone, Friday, 15 December 2017 23:03 (six years ago) link

it would be a video compression issue, not a noise reduction thing. similar to your classic jpeg artifacting

tom scott is pretty cringey but this explanation may help

micah, Saturday, 16 December 2017 02:13 (six years ago) link

i actually didn't mind him at all, i thought it was a good video! i know compression is the culprit, but the degradation is especially bad with noise content. i understand that when there are practically zero pixels on the screen that stay the same from frame to frame (as with HQ noize), it makes the compressor go bonkers.

there's a similar situation with color gradients, i think. it's barely detectable to the human eye, but if you create a really fine gradient that barely changes hue from pixel to pixel, and then gradually change it to a different gradient over time, there's often some noticeable artificating that happens regardless of the bitrate quality. but where gradient compression is often a bit noticeable but tolerable, with noise it's just completely unwatchable (imo), like everything that's interesting about the noise just gets obliterated.

thanks again for sharing that, micah!

Flickr always go on about leaving your originals untouched but that might only be for viewing on-site and not embedding. Have you tried uploading it there?

yeah, it's pretty gross! it's one element out of several others for a longer thing. i like how it kind of also looks like the form of a ostrich's head as well (with a beak on the lower right instead of the brainstem)

i haven't maaaade a gif in 26 yeaaarrrsss

but for real i've barely made anything recently. everything has been going into a sound installation which has to be done about a month from now whether it's ready or not

two weeks pass...

i killed off weinventyou.net in late January, which was really dumb. i had kind of a freakout and just hit delete. i didn't archive anything. about 2.5 days later i felt intense regret, but the good news is that it really motivated me to rethink my portfolio and how i'm presenting what i'm doing. and also, i had old .psd files of most of my GIFs on an external hard drive, albeit chaotically organized. anyway, i finally am ready to share my new website/home base:

www.zachscott.org

the 1000 or so gifs on weinventyou have been narrowed down to about 25, and i've dedicated space to the installation-based stuff i've really been focused on lately. please check it out if you get a moment!

---
also, for those of you around Chicago, i'm showing a sound installation at a pop-up exhibition on May 2 - please drop by to say hello! i'll probably be the guy in the corner, crying

startled macropod (MatthewK), Monday, 16 April 2018 02:47 (six years ago) link

thank you! and thanks for taking a look! it's very enjoyable to decouple my homepage from Tumblr/social media. it kind of sucks on one level because i had a decent online following on weinventyou (humblebrag, sorry), whereas the new website will be lucky to see 50 visitors a month. but it's also very nice to feel like i "own" it and can customize it as much as i want to. and very nice to not feel the subconscious pressure of making something that people "like" or "reblog". i know it's lame to admit that it was a consideration, but it's difficult not to let that influence what you're making. it feels very liberating to be away from that!

Karl Malone, Monday, 16 April 2018 03:22 (six years ago) link

"Noise" is pretty trippy!

DJI, Monday, 16 April 2018 03:24 (six years ago) link

This is fantastic. I'm also relieved you preserved centaur.gif

Fetchboy, Monday, 16 April 2018 03:30 (six years ago) link

yeah that was kind of a trippy day! here's an outtake from that one

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/zachscott.org/Assets/TheLivingRoom/2017-03-10++typing.gif

originally it was going to be a video with the action moving from the wall to the real living room to the objects and me, back and forth, but i never got going on it.

Karl Malone, Monday, 16 April 2018 03:33 (six years ago) link

xpost thanks fetchboy! it would probably be pretty easy to do a centaurpart2.gif. i feel like i see that centaur in new photos every few weeks or so, it's very photogenic.

If you had a following from Wordpress could you revive it but post links to your site? or is that not allowed?

startled macropod (MatthewK), Monday, 16 April 2018 05:16 (six years ago) link

Hmmm, what do you mean by “revive”? Can you follow blogs on Wordpress? I guess it has a social layer, too, but I haven’t thought about it yet.

Karl Malone, Monday, 16 April 2018 05:30 (six years ago) link

Sorry - misunderstood, thought weinventyou was hosted on Wordpress, my mistake.
