The Kuchars really weren't credited with co-directing much of their total oeuvre.

xp morbs, has barbara kopple ever again made a great film after Harlan County? She has nothing listed on imdb between 1976 and 1990... I had the impression that HCUSA was kindof it for her.

plax (ico), Thursday, 16 November 2017 18:24 (six years ago) link

She was part of the collective that made Winter Soldier in '72, one of the best Vietnam War-themed docs, and won a second Oscar for American Dream, which I've never seen. I quite like her Woody Allen portrait Wild Man Blues, particularly the nightmarish scene near the end with WA's 90something parents.

But there are dozens of people in this list who didn't make one great film.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 November 2017 18:32 (six years ago) link

(haven't seen her Dixie Chicks, Sharon Jones or Hemingway family docs either)

Listing experimental film-makers is an invitation to the sad lonely vote.

we are going to list every director, it seems

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 November 2017 19:33 (six years ago) link

Yeah, waiting for someone to nominate Ed Wood so we can get this poll on the road already

how many votes do we get? cuz even if it's 50, plenty i love will not be on it.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:42 (six years ago) link

tbh I'll end up voting for people where I know and live one film maybe, it's the nature of the format

Was going to say 50, but no reason it can't be more I suppose.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:32 (six years ago) link

List is up to 472. (Added Milestone; not sure how that missed the cut.)

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:32 (six years ago) link

I don't think more than 50 is a good idea if we're trying to pick la creme (also some voters would struggle to name 50 non-Marvel directors).

So you're saying you want other people's slots for your ballot.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:50 (six years ago) link

no.

my point was more "stop nominating people even you are not going to vote for"

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:53 (six years ago) link

I mean harlan county is a p singular film, really shocking the first time you see it.

on Morbz logic,
Bush Mama is easily one of my favourite films of all time, even if the couple of others I've seen by him come nowhere close

plax (ico), Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:54 (six years ago) link

I saw Bush Mama on my birthday this year.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 17 November 2017 21:46 (six years ago) link

Oh, I think more than 50 slots would be a fucking awful idea. I'd be more into like 25 or so? But as I tend to say on every nomination thread, I like nominations to be comprehensive so that I have a list I can refer to and go "oh yeah, forgot about that one!" Basically, my memory sucks and I need help.

I am pretty worried that this list is just going to be a crappy retread of other best director lists, and I'm also already having high anxiety about voting for Polanski, which I am definitely going to do but I feel 100% shitty about. To be fair to him I'll probably vote for other shitbags who happen to be less notorious too.

emil.y, Saturday, 18 November 2017 02:34 (six years ago) link

Polanski is likely to be in my top 10. Just a fact.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Saturday, 18 November 2017 14:04 (six years ago) link

I'll vote for Polanski only if he happens to die by the time I get around to sending my ballot.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 18 November 2017 14:49 (six years ago) link

I won't think for a second about what kind of person I'm voting for. I don't know if Polanski (who may or may not be on my list--the old peak value vs. career value question) would be the only one where that's even an issue; most of the people I won't know anything anyway, and I hadn't planned on a James Toback vote. I could see grappling with that if it involved flying someone in to receive a state honour, like the Legion of France, but not with a message-board poll.

clemenza, Saturday, 18 November 2017 16:09 (six years ago) link

(Anyway, that's a personal call--no problem with emily's stance.)

clemenza, Saturday, 18 November 2017 16:10 (six years ago) link

There aren't 50 great directors and there aren't 472 good directors
